00:31	gonna find Maryland . Okay , here is the map
00:34	of the United States and we're going to find out
00:37	exactly where Maryland is . So where is it ?
00:41	Do you already know where Maryland is on the United
00:45	States map ? Yeah Maryland is right here , Maryland

00:54	region of the United States called the mid atlantic cool

01:04	the state of Maryland . Mm for example bordering Maryland
01:10	to the north is pennsylvania . Then bordering Maryland to
01:17	the northeast is the state of Delaware . Then bordering
01:25	Maryland . To the east is a big body of
01:27	water called the atlantic ocean . But then directly south
01:34	of Maryland is Virginia . Mhm . Then finally bordering
01:40	Maryland to the west and south is the state of
01:44	west Virginia . Finally right here in between Maryland and
01:51	Virginia is Washington D . C Washington D . C

01:57	why ? Yeah Washington D . C . Is the
02:02	capital of the United States . To review Maryland is
02:08	right here on the United States map in a region
02:11	of the United States called the mid atlantic . Always
02:17	awesome . Now that we know exactly where Maryland is
02:21	on the United States map we are going to look
02:24	at two nicknames of Maryland to learn even more about
02:27	this wonderful state . To nicknames of Maryland are the
02:34	old line state and the Free state . Uh huh
02:39	. The old line Stay and the Free State first
02:45	. Why is Maryland called the Old Line State ?
02:48	That's an interesting nickname . How did Maryland get that
02:51	nickname ? There are two main ideas of where this
02:57	came from . The first has to do with George
03:00	Washington . George Washington himself . Okay , the first
03:03	president of the United States , The incredible general George
03:07	Washington is said to have called the Maryland soldiers .
03:12	The old line . This was during the Revolutionary War
03:18	and Maryland was the only state that had troops of
03:22	the line . Regular Line troops . Okay , yeah
03:28	, They had a reputation for being very brave and
03:31	very strong in battle . So the idea was that
03:35	George Washington called them the old line . That's the
03:38	story . Do we know for sure ? Not 100%
03:41	. But the story is that George Washington called the
03:44	soldiers the old line and that's where the nickname ,
03:47	Old Line State comes from . Mhm . The origin
03:52	of this name might be from before . Even the
03:54	days of the Revolutionary War . You see , some
03:57	people believe the name comes from the line that separated
04:00	William penn and Lord Baltimore's land . You can see
04:07	it right here . It's the line that divides pennsylvania
04:10	and Maryland . Today . Is this where Maryland got
04:16	the nickname ? The Old Line State ? Maybe or
04:18	maybe they got the nickname from George Washington . But
04:21	either way , Maryland is the Old line state .
04:25	All right . So why is Maryland called the Free
04:30	State ? Aren't all of the States Free ? Yeah
04:35	, this nickname originates from a newspaper , a newspaper
04:38	called the Baltimore Sun . You see Hamilton Owens the
04:42	editor of the Baltimore Sun newspaper would call Maryland the
04:46	Free State in articles , there was some pressure from
04:52	the federal government to make decisions that the state of
04:55	Maryland was not comfortable with them . So they said
04:58	no , thank you . They said no . So
05:01	the nickname , the Free State was really big back
05:04	then and the name stuck having a good time so
05:09	far awesome . We're going to learn even more about
05:13	the old line state the Free state Maryland by looking
05:17	at the state flag . So here it is the
05:23	flag of the state of Maryland . In the upper
05:30	left hand corner and lower right hand corner is a
05:32	gold and black design . That is the coat of
05:36	arms from the calvert family . The calvert family was
05:40	very important to the history of Maryland . You see
05:46	George calvert was the first baron of Baltimore . In
05:51	the upper right hand corner and lower left hand corner
05:56	of the Maryland flag is the coat of arms of
05:59	the cross land line , which is through lord Baltimore's
06:03	mother . Mhm . Yeah . This flag is very
06:08	unique because it honors a very important family in the
06:12	history of Maryland . Okay now we are going to
06:17	locate two major cities on the map of Maryland .
06:21	The first city is this Annapolis ? Annapolis is the
06:26	capital of Maryland . Then a little further north is
06:33	the city of Baltimore . Baltimore is the largest city
06:37	in Maryland , Baltimore is also the second largest seaport
06:42	in the mid atlantic . You can see that it's
06:45	right near a harbor . Mhm . Here is our
06:49	final question . What is the state bird of Maryland
06:54	? Mhm . Yeah . The state bird of Maryland
06:58	is the Baltimore Oriole . The Baltimore Oriole is a
07:03	small black bird that resembles the colours of the coat
07:07	of arms of Lord Baltimore . Remember of the calvert
07:10	family that make up the flag that black and gold
07:15	. They enjoy staying way high up and very leafy
07:20	trees . But look out they might visit your bird
