00:00 wow , We are going to learn so many cool
00:03 things on this home school pop video . All right
00:06 . What's the first thing we should learn ? How
00:09 about roman numerals ? Which is a different way to
00:13 write numbers . And it was used a long time
00:17 ago in ancient Rome and it's been used since then
00:20 . And you can think of it almost as a
00:22 secret code way of writing the numbers . It's pretty
00:26 simple to learn . And we're going to go through
00:28 that . The first roman numeral we're gonna learn is
00:33 the roman numeral . I and I is one I
00:39 equals one . So , if you see an eye
00:42 with the roman numeral , it's one . The letter
00:45 V . Is the roman numeral that means five .
00:49 And the letter X . Is the roman numeral ,
00:54 that means 10 . So , when you think one
00:58 , it's an eye , you think five . It's
01:01 a V . If you think 10 , it's an
01:04 X . So that's it . Just those three .
01:09 I it almost looks like a one . That's how
01:13 you can remember that . I is a one I
01:16 is the roman numeral for one . A V .
01:19 Is in the number five . When you spell it
01:22 out the number five , you see that right there
01:24 . It has a V . In it . So
01:26 when you think of V , you know , oh
01:28 you know what ? There's a V . In the
01:32 spelled out number five . So V has to be
01:36 five now . 10 is exit , We can't think
01:39 of anything that could remind us of that . So
01:42 there is no memorization thing just when you see the
01:44 exits 10 and that's just what we're going to have
01:48 to do . Okay , one last time here ,
01:52 I just want to make sure you get it .
01:53 There's only three . I is the roman numeral for
01:57 one , the is the roman numeral for five and
02:01 X . Is the roman numeral for 10 . And
02:04 you've got to understand that so that we can start
02:06 playing kind of a game of putting them together And
02:10 making numbers other than just 15 and 10 . So
02:15 let's get started . So let's practice putting these Roman
02:20 numerals together . What number do you think this is
02:25 ? You see two eyes And I is one .
02:32 So the answer is to two eyes is the number
02:37 two . What about this one ? You what number
02:46 do you think this is ? Why there are three
02:51 eyes ? Yeah , it's the number three . The
02:57 let's try this one . What number do you think
03:02 this is ? We see two . X is an
03:08 X equals 10 . So 10 plus 10 equals 20
03:15 . Great job . This is the number 20 .
03:23 Whoa . This one is so cool . Okay .
03:27 An X and a V . What number do you
03:29 think this is ? Okay . The X . Is
03:35 a 10 V . Is what number five , awesome
03:42 . So what is 10 plus five ? 15 .
03:48 Whoa . Thanks so much for helping out now that
03:54 we've looked at how to put some of these together
03:57 . I want to tell you about two special numerals
03:59 that are a little bit different . And so you're
04:02 gonna have to just remember these on their own .
04:04 The first is the number four and the number four
04:07 is represented with an I . And V . And
04:11 eyes before the V . Because four is one less
04:16 than five which is V . So remember with four
04:20 , its I . V . With nine similar except
04:24 with the X . Nine is I . X .
04:27 X . Is 10 and eyes just before it .
04:30 So nine is I . X . Okay that was
04:36 really cool . Thanks for hanging out and learning those
04:39 with me . But we're not done . We want
04:41 to go through all the numbers up to 30 just
04:45 using the numerals and I want to see how much
04:48 you've really learned . So if you'll do me a
04:50 favor as the numerals go up . I want you
04:53 to say the numbers along with me and we can
04:57 practice together . Sound good . Alright , let's get
05:00 started . One two 34 five Sex seven eight nine
05:22 . Yeah . 10 11 . Yeah . 12 ,
05:29 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ,
05:41 18 , 19 , 20 21 22 23 24 25
05:55 26 , 27 28 29 and 30 . Well ,
06:05 there you have a new way to write numbers .
06:09 Hey ? Well , okay , First of all elephants
06:12 don't drive . Okay , elephants can't get a driver's
06:15 license and he's driving on the grass . He's driving
06:19 on the grass . You're gonna row in the lawn
06:21 . Okay , Let's go it on their . Alright
06:24 , this is out of hand . Okay , Elephant
06:27 . I don't want to tell you what you can
06:28 do what you can't do what you can't drive .
06:31 All right . Oh my goodness ! All right ,
06:34 Next we are going to learn about even and odd
06:40 numbers . A number belongs to one or two groups
06:43 . Either it's an even number or it's an odd
06:46 number . So what's going on ? Why is this
06:49 even a thing we're going to talk about it even
06:55 in odd is actually pretty easy , but it's just
06:58 a matter of knowing what to look for . So
07:01 we're going to be like detectives together . Okay ,
07:03 you're gonna have to have an eagle uh to help
07:07 us out on her quest . We're gonna use dinosaurs
07:10 , dinosaurs are awesome . And here's a red dinosaur
07:14 . That's I don't know why it's windy , there's
07:16 wind going on and I don't know what's what's let's
07:20 change the scenery . Let's let's make it more modern
07:23 day . There you go . Look at that .
07:24 Just walking through the neighborhood strolling . he's ready to
07:28 help us discover the secret , right to knowing even
07:35 an odd . So what is this key that we're
07:39 looking for ? What are we looking for that will
07:40 tell us if a number is even or if the
07:44 number is odd and even number can be grouped by
07:50 to an odd number , cannot be evenly grouped by
07:54 two . So it's all about the number two .
07:56 And that might sound confusing . Let me show you
07:58 and you'll see here is the easiest number to do
08:04 . We're looking for the number two . Okay .
08:07 Can it be put in a group of two ?
08:09 Well , yes , because it's the number two .
08:10 We've got to dinosaurs . That makes to even now
08:16 . This is odd . This dinosaurs . All alone
08:19 . He's not in a group of two . This
08:22 makes the number one an odd number because he's all
08:25 alone . That's odd . It's an odd number .
08:29 Let's look back at the number to see what's neat
08:33 about . This is it's an even group of two
08:36 . That means our dinosaur has a friend . He
08:38 can talk to his friend , he can hang out
08:41 . It's not it's not weird . It's not odd
08:43 . It's an even number here . We have three
08:47 dinosaurs . Now can we put the number three in
08:50 even groups of two ? Well no because that third
08:53 dinosaurs , all alone . The top two dinosaurs have
08:56 somebody . Three is odd . There's one that's missing
08:59 a partner Here . We have four dinosaurs . Now
09:04 we're looking for groups of the # two . Now
09:07 we have two groups of to hear . That means
09:09 it's an even number . Each dinosaur has a friend
09:13 , wow . Five dinosaurs . But look one on
09:20 the bottom doesn't have a pal , doesn't have a
09:23 friend . That's odd . It's not evenly grouped into
09:27 25 is an odd number . Hey buddy . Okay
09:31 don't don't run . Okay we'll get back to the
09:33 even numbers . I know you don't like the odds
09:35 . You don't like being the odd dinosaur out .
09:38 It's okay . I promise this next number is going
09:41 to be even because it goes for even odd .
09:44 Even odd . Just hang on man dinosaurs . You
09:49 know so temperamental . You know I mean what's that
09:53 all about ? I mean a dog dog wouldn't have
09:56 done that . You know dogs are better . I
09:59 think now the dinosaurs you know I'm just kidding ,
10:03 dinosaurs are so cool . Moving on here we have
10:13 six dinosaurs . Now each dinosaur has a friend .
10:18 That means six is even you can split it up
10:22 in groups of two . Oh here we have seven
10:29 dinosaurs . But there's one dinosaur that's all alone .
10:32 Six of them have friends but one is all alone
10:35 . Doesn't have a pair . Seven is odd .
10:41 Mhm . The number eight . Does everyone have a
10:45 friend ? Yes there's no one without a friend .
10:48 Number eight is an even number . It splits up
10:52 into two very nicely . Eight is even let's go
10:57 even higher than number nine . Now you can see
11:00 really quick it's easy to spot . Is nine even
11:04 or odd . Yes it's odd . There's one who
11:08 doesn't have a friend . Nine . Izod . Oh
11:12 my goodness . 10 . 10 . Is it even
11:16 or is it odd ? You tell me you know
11:18 how to do it now . You know the trick
11:21 ? Yes 10 is even . Everybody has a friend
11:27 . Now we're about to teach you to sneaky tricks
11:32 that you can use with even and odd numbers .
11:34 Okay so seriously Because it's well it's it's not it's
11:39 not really sneaky . But anyway so this first trick
11:44 is that all of the numbers alternate from odd to
11:48 even and back . And we're going to show you
11:51 what that means and what that looks like Here we
11:57 have the 1st 10 numbers numbers one through 10 .
12:01 And the trick was all of the numbers alternate from
12:04 odd to even and back . Do you remember if
12:08 number one is odd or even ? Yes . Number
12:15 one is odd because remember number one all by himself
12:18 doesn't have a friend , doesn't have a partner .
12:20 It's not an even number . Number one is odd
12:23 . Now we remember number two , right . Number
12:27 two is even Yes because it can be grouped into
12:31 because it is too . Now if they alternate that
12:35 means which one is number three ? It's odd .
12:43 This is where it gets fun . If three is
12:46 odd then that means four is even good job and
12:53 if four is even , that means five must be
12:58 odd . Yeah and if five is odd , that
13:03 means six must be you guessed it even . And
13:09 if six is even , that means seven must be
13:14 odd . Yes , seven is odd . If seven
13:18 is odd , that means eight is come on .
13:21 What's the pattern ? Eight is even . And if
13:25 Aid is even , that means nine must be odd
13:30 and nine is odd . Come on . Is this
13:32 not just the most fun trick ever ? If nine
13:37 is odd , that means 10 is even . They
13:41 all alternate . So the first trick is that they
13:46 alternate the numbers alternate , odd , even odd ,
13:49 even odd , even odd , even odd . Even
13:53 now , we're going to look at the second trick
13:56 . The second trick is that with numbers bigger than
14:00 10 ? If it's odd or even you can see
14:03 on the end With numbers bigger than 10 . If
14:07 it's odd or even you can see on the end
14:14 To demonstrate , let's play a game we here at
14:17 home school pop call odd or even . We're gonna
14:21 look at a number that's bigger than 10 . We're
14:24 going to look on the end to see if it's
14:26 even or if it's odd . Our 1st 1 is
14:29 the number 21 . Is it odd ? Or is
14:33 it even ? It's odd . How why what we
14:39 look on the end ? The end is a one
14:42 . A one is odd . It's all by itself
14:45 . A one is odd . So 21 is odd
14:49 because one is the ending it . Mhm . Did
14:55 you know that means 71 is odd and 101 is
15:00 odd and 131 is odd . And the number 1000
15:05 and one is odd . Why they all end in
15:08 one . Let's try this one . The number 32
15:12 is odd . Or is it even 32 is even
15:20 ? Well , how do we know because of the
15:23 ending ? Look at the ending , it's the number
15:24 22 is an even number because it's a group of
15:28 two . It can be put in groups of two
15:30 because it is to the same rule applies . This
15:34 is the second trick with numbers bigger than 10 if
15:37 it's odd . Or even you can see on the
15:40 end every single number that you can think of ends
15:45 in two is an even number . Let's try one
15:53 . That's a little more tricky . Let's try the
15:56 number . 100 is 100 odd . Or is it
16:01 even ? Mhm . 100 is even . It's even
16:12 and we know that because of the ending it ends
16:15 in a zero . Now remember second trick with numbers
16:19 bigger than 10 if it's odd or even . You
16:22 can see on the end and ending is a zero
16:26 and every number that ends and zero is even .
16:30 Let's look at the chart again . Mhm . As
16:34 you can see 10 on the bottom ends in zero
16:39 and it's even every single number that ends in zero
16:43 is even just like every number that ends in A
16:46 one is odd . Every number that ends in a
16:49 two is even . Every number that ends in A
16:52 three is odd because three is odd , every number
16:56 that ends in A four is even and it goes
16:59 on and on numbers that end in five are odd
17:02 numbers that end in six or even numbers that end
17:06 in seven are odd Numbers that end in eight are
17:13 even Numbers that end in nine are odd and the
17:18 numbers like 10 , the end in zero are always
17:22 even . So there you go odd . And even
17:27 as long as you learn these you'll know any number
17:30 because the endings always tell you if it's otter even
17:34 so once you know these you'll know all of them
17:40 . Oh this is such a heavy cart . Oh
17:44 my goodness . It's hard work . You know ,
17:47 a lot of times learning can be hard work too
17:50 . But we hope that these videos are really helpful
17:53 . Make learning fun . So that learning is hard
17:56 , like pushing this cart . Oh my goodness !
17:59 All right , what's the next thing we should learn
18:02 about ? Let's learn about equal parts . We're going
18:07 to learn how to recognize if something shows equal parts
18:12 or if something shows unequal parts , hold on my
18:20 my boss is giving me his pizza order again .
18:24 I'm telling you he loves pizza way too much .
18:27 I mean I like pizza , it's fine , but
18:30 he's always giving me his pizza order . I'm always
18:33 picking it up for him and this is just this
18:36 is uh you know I I just here I just
18:39 got to keep writing down , you know , he's
18:41 got all these instructions . He likes his pizza a
18:44 certain way . Oh wow . Oh he's he wants
18:49 he wants me to have some of the pizza with
18:51 him . Oh man . And and Tad and and
18:55 Gilbert , all four of us having the same pizza
19:00 . All the sharing of pizza . So what would
19:05 that look like ? What would it look like if
19:07 we had this pizza put in four equal parts ,
19:13 how would we know that these parts of the pizza
19:16 were equal A Pizza with four equal parts might look
19:23 like this pretty cool . Huh ? We know the
19:28 parts are equal because each of the parts are the
19:32 same size . We're going to play a game called
19:40 Are these equal parts ? Okay . It's not really
19:46 a game , but we can make it into a
19:47 game , right ? Okay . It's not like checkers
19:50 . It's not like chess , you know , It's
19:52 not like basketball , like soccer . Okay . It's
19:56 not like a game game game . Okay . But
19:59 it's still going to be fun . And we're going
20:01 to be able to see work with me here .
20:05 Okay . We're going to be able to see if
20:08 these pictures show equal parts or if these pictures show
20:13 unequal parts . So here is our first picture .
20:20 Now , we're gonna be looking to see if this
20:23 picture shows equal parts . And this picture shows how
20:27 many parts . Two good job now are these equal
20:34 parts ? Yes , this picture shows two equal parts
20:43 and we know they're equal because they're the same size
20:47 . Now look at this one . This picture shows
20:53 how many parts Yeah , three parts . Now are
20:59 these equal parts ? No , they're not equal parts
21:05 . They're not equal parts because they're not all the
21:08 same size . This picture does not show equal parts
21:13 . Great job . Now let's give this picture a
21:18 try How many parts to this picture show three good
21:26 job . And are these parts equal parts ? No
21:33 they're not equal parts . Can you imagine if you
21:36 got that bottom part ? If this if this square
21:40 was like a cake and you've got that bottom part
21:42 that wouldn't be fair . Why ? These are not
21:44 equal parts . Let's give this triangle picture a Try
21:51 . How many parts does this picture show Great Job
21:57 . three . And are these equal parts ? Mhm
22:03 . Mhm . Yes they're equal parts because they are
22:07 all the same size . Equal parts means each part
22:11 is the same size . Great Job . What about
22:18 this picture ? How many parts does this picture have
22:23 ? Be careful when you count ? It's a little
22:25 bit tricky . This picture has four parts . Now
22:32 . Are these equal parts ? No , they're not
22:37 equal parts . How do we know because they're not
22:41 the same size ? Yeah , I don't know about
22:48 you but I feel pretty good about this . Equal
22:50 parts stuff . It just means that the parts are
22:53 the same size when they're the same size . That
22:56 means they're equal . You're doing great , you're increasing
23:01 your skills just like this razor , you're racing on
23:05 the water , you're increasing your skills . You're doing
23:08 a wonderful job . And next we are going to
23:11 learn about units of time . Mhm . There are
23:19 three main units of time in a day . Seconds
23:23 , minutes and hours . A second is the smallest
23:30 unit of time . It's so tiny . A minute
23:33 is a lot bigger than a second . And then
23:36 an hour is even bigger . An hour is the
23:39 biggest unit of time in a day . Yeah .
23:43 Yeah , we're going to look at each of these
23:47 individually . Okay , It is going to be a
23:51 great time . It's funny right first we're gonna learn
24:02 about seconds A second is the smallest unit of time
24:10 . It's extremely short . Now , a fair warning
24:13 to you . You're about to see some very cute
24:16 animals that are going to help us understand just how
24:19 long a second is . Hey , what did we
24:24 say ? We warned you the time that it takes
24:28 . This cute little dog to jump is a second
24:33 . It's just like a moment . Boom . The
24:36 dog jump swooped in the air for a second down
24:40 and you see how this dog is jumping over that
24:42 pole . Really cool . Great dog . It takes
24:45 just a second to jump . That's the second .
24:49 That's the sound . That's the second . Mm Okay
24:55 . Another cute animal . This is a cat and
24:57 this cat is blinking . The time it takes to
25:01 blink is a second . Not just for cats for
25:03 humans . Why don't you give it a try ?
25:05 Go ahead and blink . Yeah that's the second .
25:10 Can you blink again ? That's another second . Can
25:14 you blink again ? That's a second . It's so
25:17 short . It's such a short amount of time .
25:20 Could you blink again ? Okay that will be the
25:22 last time . Okay it's a second . It's a
25:24 second to blink . Oh who doesn't love a good
25:31 seal ? Here's a seal in the water . Sang
25:35 high by waving . That wave takes just a second
25:40 . Did you know when we say hi ? That
25:42 takes a second to why don't we give that a
25:45 try ? Say the word high hi hi . That's
25:52 the second . High . That's a second . High
25:56 . Now I don't want you to annoy people around
25:58 you but I want you to understand . It just
26:00 takes a second to say hi or to waive waving
26:05 usually takes just a second . Mhm . On a
26:12 clock . Seconds are shown with the thinnest line .
26:15 It's also the line that moves the fastest because seconds
26:19 are the shortest period of time now , you might
26:26 not realize this , but every unit of time has
26:29 an abbreviation . An abbreviation is a short form of
26:34 a word and seconds actually have two abbreviations . The
26:43 abbreviations of seconds are sec or just the letter s
26:50 . Here's an example . You could say 1 2nd
26:53 or if you wanted to write it with an abbreviation
26:56 , you could write one sec Or just one s
27:02 . Here's another example . Five seconds could be written
27:08 five sec or five s . Now you don't always
27:12 have to do that . You don't always have to
27:14 use an abbreviation . But if you want to abbreviate
27:17 and make seconds shorter , you can just write five
27:20 sex or five s . The final example , 10
27:27 seconds can be written 10 sec or 10 S .
27:32 Sec or s are abbreviations of the word . Seconds
27:39 . Seconds are the shortest unit of time . Mm
27:47 Next we're gonna talk about minutes a minute is the
27:53 next biggest unit of time . After seconds . Now
27:56 , how much bigger is a minute than a second
28:02 ? Well , believe it or not a minute is
28:05 60 seconds . 60 seconds . Sixties . A lot
28:09 . Now you might be wondering how much is 60
28:11 ? I'd love to see that . Well look at
28:14 this A it's a lot . It's a lot .
28:19 60s . A lot . A minute . It's 60
28:22 seconds . Here's an example of something that takes about
28:28 a minute . A little girl blowing bubbles takes about
28:31 a minute . About 60 seconds for a while .
28:35 She'll blow these bubbles and then she'll be done .
28:38 She might spend a couple minutes where she might just
28:40 spend a minute . It's not too long but it's
28:43 not too sure it's a minute . This little boy's
28:48 tired . Maybe he played for a long time and
28:51 he just wants to sit down for a minute .
28:53 This is something that might take a minute sitting down
28:56 and just taking a break . It wouldn't be enough
29:00 of a break to just take a second break but
29:03 a minute can help him rest . A minute is
29:07 60 seconds . It's enough time to take a break
29:10 to breathe for a while and then to go back
29:13 to playing . Here's our final example of a minute
29:17 a little girl who's cuddling with her teddy bear .
29:21 Maybe she named him Mr Perkins and maybe she'll give
29:24 him hugs every once in a while . But now
29:26 she's taking her time to cuddle him for 60 seconds
29:32 a minute . Maybe she'll spend about a minute a
29:34 second . Would just be too short to hug Mr
29:37 Perkins but cuddling for a minute . She would take
29:41 a minute to do that on a clock . Minutes
29:47 are shown with the longest line . So when you
29:50 look at a clock the longest line called a hand
29:53 on a clock that longest hand measures the minutes now
30:01 . Remember every unit of time has an abbreviation and
30:05 remember an abbreviation is just a short form of a
30:09 word . The abbreviation of minutes is men . M
30:17 . I . N . Men . Here's an example
30:21 . One minute would be abbreviated one men . Look
30:28 at this 15 minutes would be abbreviated five men .
30:37 10 minutes would be abbreviated 10 men a minute is
30:44 the next biggest unit of time after seconds . The
30:52 last unit of time we're looking at today are ours
30:56 . Ours are the largest units of time in the
31:00 day . In fact in a day there's only 24
31:03 of them . Not many at all . Okay ,
31:08 so how long is an hour exactly ? Well ,
31:11 an hour is 60 minutes . Do you remember how
31:15 big the number 60 is ? Right ? Oh ,
31:18 Lots of minutes . 60 minutes . An hour is
31:23 60 minutes . Remember a minute is 60 seconds .
31:27 So it's a lot of time . Here's an example
31:31 of an hour . This girl playing out in the
31:34 snow . This girl would want to play out in
31:37 the snow for like an hour , right , 60
31:39 minutes . One minute wouldn't be enough playing out in
31:42 the snow in one second . Well , one second
31:45 is like high and that's the second . Remember ?
31:48 So an hour , 60 minutes . It's a good
31:50 long time to play out in the snow . And
31:53 that's how long this little girl might be playing outside
31:57 in the snow . Oh , fun playing out in
32:03 the water . That's awesome . This is so much
32:06 fun . This little boy is probably going to want
32:09 to play in the water for about an hour .
32:11 Right ? One minute . Wouldn't belong to play in
32:14 the water at all . Remember one minute is only
32:17 60 seconds and one second . Remember high , That's
32:21 a second . So when hours , a good long
32:23 time to play out in the water to have a
32:26 lot of fun and to get some really great exercise
32:30 . Here's our final example of an hour . This
32:34 little girl is taking a nap . A nap .
32:38 Oftentimes takes an hour . One minute wouldn't be long
32:42 enough for a really good nap and one second .
32:45 Well you already know how long a second is a
32:48 second . Wouldn't do it all either . And hours
32:51 a good long time on the clock . Hours are
32:58 shown with the thick short line and that's the line
33:02 on the clock that moves the slowest because ours are
33:06 so long Now , as you remember before , every
33:12 unit of time has an abbreviation and an abbreviation is
33:18 a short form of a word . Okay , These
33:22 kids already know this . Okay . And why is
33:24 this penguin moving soap ? The abbreviations of an hour
33:30 ? Our HR or just H here's an example ,
33:34 one hour could be written one HR or one H
33:42 . Now . five hours could be abbreviated five hr
33:47 . Or five age and 24 hours , which is
33:52 how long a day is ? Could be abbreviated 24
33:56 HR or 24 age , wow mom , you're doing
34:02 such a great job in your race . I had
34:05 no idea you were an athlete . Okay . I
34:08 mean with all that cloth wrapped around , you're doing
34:11 great . You're doing a great job . Just like
34:13 these kids are doing a great job of learning .
34:15 In fact , how about this ? The next thing
34:18 we're gonna learn about is subtraction . Oh do you
34:28 know where I am ? Yeah . You know I'm
34:32 waiting patiently in this waiting room . Oh man ,
34:36 it has been a while . Have you ever been
34:39 in a waiting room before ? Cool . Yeah ,
34:47 they can be fun but you do have to be
34:48 patient and it's a good time to think . You
34:51 know , you can think about all kinds of things
34:53 like okay I have eight cowboy hats . I know
34:59 it's crazy , it's weird . Eight cowboy hats and
35:03 they're all the exact same . The exact same hat
35:07 . I've got eight of them . Eight brown cowboy
35:11 hats . I mean what's the guy going to do
35:14 with eight brown cowboy hats that look the exact same
35:20 ? What could I possibly do with eight Brown Cowboy
35:24 Hats that are all the same . I mean I
35:26 should probably give some of them away . You know
35:31 , I could give away one of my hats to
35:32 bob . I'm cooking . Might want one . Yeah
35:35 she might like a brown cowboy hat . You know
35:39 I could give one a nancy you know just in
35:41 case she ever got invited to western party and chomsky
35:45 he'd take a hat . So as I'm sitting here
35:49 thinking about my eight hats , I need to figure
35:52 out how many hats I'll have left if I give
35:56 some of them away to figure that out . We
36:00 need to use subtraction . You see subtraction is when
36:05 you take numbers away . Yeah . Very simple subtraction
36:09 is when you take numbers away . So I begin
36:14 with eight hats and I decided to give one away
36:18 . We're gonna need to subtract one from eight .
36:22 The way we would write this is 8 -1 .
36:28 Now remember when we subtract , we're just taking numbers
36:33 away so 8 -1 , we're gonna just take one
36:36 away . There we go . How many hats do
36:40 I have left ? What is a -1 ? If
36:45 it helps you can just count how many hats I
36:48 have left . What is 8 -1 ? Yeah seven
36:56 eight minus one is seven . Now I have seven
37:01 hats . Remember subtraction is when you take numbers away
37:08 and as you might have noticed we use the minus
37:12 sign . When we write a subtraction problem you can
37:16 see it right there in the middle . It's just
37:19 like a dash . That's the minus sign . Yeah
37:23 so now I have seven hats but two of my
37:25 friends stopped by and I decided you know what ?
37:28 I know I just have seven hats now but I
37:30 want to give two of them away . Now I'm
37:34 gonna be subtracting two hats from my collection . We
37:38 would write this by saying 7 -2 . Now let's
37:45 take away two hats . We'll find out how many
37:48 we have left . What a wonderful subtraction problem .
37:53 What is 7 -2 ? If you need help you
37:56 can just count how many hats are left . What
37:59 is 7 -2 ? Seven minus two equals five .
38:05 Yeah . Five hats . And you can even count
38:08 them 12345 There are five hats left . Seven minus
38:14 two equals five . Do you see how fun and
38:20 simple subtraction is ? Subtraction is when you take numbers
38:25 away . So now I have five hats in my
38:30 collection . Only five hats left . But then I
38:33 meet up with my cousins who we dewey and Stewie
38:36 who want to have hats too and I'd love to
38:39 give them hats . So I'm gonna give three more
38:43 hats away . So I have five hats and we're
38:47 gonna subtract three hats . We would write that five
38:51 minus three . Oh I love subtraction so much .
38:58 No . All right Sara being there we go .
39:02 The three hats are gone . So 5 -3 .
39:07 How many hats are left ? It's pretty simple ,
39:11 isn't it ? Mhm . Yeah 5 -3 equals two
39:20 . Good job . Subtraction is just taking numbers away
39:24 and 5 -3 leaves you with two . Now I
39:28 have just two hats . We love subtraction . I
39:33 mean subtraction is when you take numbers away and why
39:39 am I in the middle of the road with the
39:41 shopping card ? So I had my two hats and
39:48 that's fun because then the hat has a friend and
39:52 they're like buddies and they're like a pair of friends
39:57 and then chomsky came by and I said oh I'm
40:03 going to have to do subtraction again , I'm going
40:07 to have to subtract again . Old chomsky , you
40:10 know that charms they came by ? I said I'm
40:14 going to have to subtract again . Mhm I'm going
40:20 to have to subtract one more time . So I
40:25 have two hats minus one . Yeah 2 -1 .
40:34 So we subtract that one . We take that one
40:37 away and how many hats are left ? What is
40:42 2 -1 ? Mm yep 2 -1 equals one .
40:52 There's only one hat left which is fine . I
40:55 mean you know I can only wear one hat at
40:58 a time and it was the same exact hat .
41:02 I think about it . Subtraction has been good to
41:04 me . It's good subtraction is taking numbers away .
41:10 Yeah trump sometimes . I do wonder what would have
41:14 happened if I didn't give that hat away . If
41:19 had he still had his friend they could have gone
41:22 to the beach together . They could have gone to
41:25 birthday parties together . Yeah but actually they had a
41:31 better purpose to make a friend happy . So ,
41:37 in this waiting room , all I gotta say is
41:41 thanks subtraction . You are pretty awesome . We are
41:51 so happy to have you with us . I mean
41:54 you are so awesome . You really are . Oh
41:57 , you like my poster Mr Whiskers poster . You
42:01 know , it's pretty cool . Pretty cool . You
42:03 know , it's a pretty cool poster . Pretty cool
42:06 cat too . I wonder what he would like to
42:09 learn about next . If he would learn from one
42:11 of our videos , what would he like to learn
42:13 next ? Mm How about let's learn about addition .
42:24 I love Edition . I love it very much .
42:27 I love Edition . I add up all my stuff
42:32 . I know the voice of an angel . All
42:36 right , So , really ? Why do I love
42:39 audition ? Why do I love Edition ? And why
42:42 should you love Edition ? Yeah , Well , I
42:46 love Edition because Edition is so simple and so much
42:51 fun . We're gonna show you were gonna prove to
42:54 you that addition is so simple and so much fun
42:57 . You're gonna have a great time doing it .
43:01 Okay , so you might be wondering what is addition
43:04 , What do we do when we do addition ?
43:05 Well , addition is putting numbers together . It's like
43:09 a great game of putting numbers together . Okay ,
43:14 addition is putting numbers together . Now we're going to
43:19 show you exactly how this works by talking about this
43:24 sport . Do you know what sport this is ?
43:32 Yeah , this is golf . This lady hit the
43:39 golf ball and she's hoping that the golf ball goes
43:43 into the hole . We're pulling for you sally .
43:47 Don't know if he actually got the ball in the
43:49 hole , but we're pulling for you sally , You
43:51 can do it salad , you can do it .
43:53 You see , she's so excited . She doesn't know
43:56 , she doesn't know but we don't know either .
43:59 So anyway all we can do is guess we don't
44:03 really know sally all that well . But let's pretend
44:07 that Sally loves golf and let's pretend that sally likes
44:12 to collect golf balls . So sally is playing with
44:19 one golf ball . Let's say that's the only golf
44:23 ball she has with her right now . She's got
44:26 one golf ball but she finds another golf ball by
44:32 a tree . So she had one golf ball and
44:37 then she found another one . We need to put
44:41 these numbers together don't we ? To find out how
44:44 many golf balls she has now putting numbers together .
44:48 That's that's addition , that's addition . So now we
44:55 put these two numbers together . She had one golf
44:59 ball , she found another one . So let's add
45:02 both of those balls . How many do we have
45:07 ? Yeah . To sally now has two golf balls
45:14 . Good job Sally , oh , audition , I
45:19 knew I loved you audition . All you are is
45:23 just putting numbers together . So simple , so fun
45:27 a game anyone can play well , you know ,
45:33 sally , you know sally , she went back to
45:36 that golf course the very next day because remember she
45:41 loves golf , right ? And of course sally brought
45:46 her to golf balls because remember she had one golf
45:50 ball and she found another one , so now she
45:52 has to but you know what , she had a
45:54 great day at the course and she actually found two
45:58 more balls . I know isn't that crazy , sadly
46:02 is really great at finding golf balls . She found
46:06 two more balls . Now we have to find out
46:12 how many golf balls she has are just like we're
46:16 putting that we're putting numbers together , it's addition ,
46:19 it's hard we're gonna get to through addition again .
46:22 Remember audition is putting numbers together ? She had two
46:26 balls and now she's found two more balls and we
46:30 get to find out how many she has now .
46:32 That's edition putting numbers together . So she had two
46:38 balls and she's found two new ones . So we
46:41 need to find out what two plus two is .
46:45 What a great addition problem . What's two plus two
46:50 ? If you don't know you can actually just count
46:53 the golf balls . What's two plus two ? Yeah
46:59 . 42 plus two equals four . Remember , addition
47:07 is putting numbers together . Two plus two equals four
47:14 . That's addition , putting numbers together . Oh bless
47:22 her heart . Sally's at it again . She's back
47:25 at the golf course to collect more golf balls .
47:31 So sally brings all of her golf balls . Now
47:35 she has four of them . She brought all four
47:39 to the golf course . Well she looked high and
47:43 low and wouldn't you know it ? She found three
47:47 golf balls during her time at the golf course .
47:51 I know she's so good at collecting golf balls .
47:55 Now , we need to figure out how many golf
47:58 balls she has . And yes , we're putting numbers
48:01 together . So it's going to be an addition problem
48:04 . She had four golf balls and now she has
48:08 three more golf balls . So what is four plus
48:14 three ? Mm , Okay , remember with addition ,
48:20 we're just putting numbers together . So if you need
48:23 help , you can actually count the number of golf
48:26 balls on the screen . What's four plus three ?
48:35 Yeah , four plus three equals seven . She has
48:40 seven golf balls now . Great job adding . Well
48:47 , now , you know , the basics of audition
48:50 and now , you know why I love auditions so
48:54 much . In the comments below . Tell us how
48:57 much you love edition because it's fun . Right ?
49:00 It's simple . It's fun where sally , where sally
49:04 ah there she is . She is . There's our
49:07 little star . Thanks for helping us count how many
49:10 golf balls shiga and remember addition is just putting numbers
49:15 together . Oh wow . Look , it's the homophone
49:19 cow , Homophone cow , hama phone , cattle .
49:24 You're just walking , you're just just gonna ignore me
49:27 . I see how it is . Okay , so
49:30 you're upset that we haven't included you in other videos
49:32 ? What do you call this ? You know ,
49:34 you're in a compilation video . That's cool too .
49:37 All right . I need to talk to the homophone
49:41 cow , but in the meantime , let's learn about
49:46 fractions . Fractions are so awesome and so much fun
49:52 . Many of you think so too . A couple
49:54 of weeks ago we set up a poll on our
49:56 channel and many of you voted for fractions as our
50:00 next math video . That's really awesome . Thanks everyone
50:03 for voting . And don't worry , we'll make the
50:05 other two videos to later on . But this is
50:08 all about fractions . All right , well let's start
50:13 here . What is a fraction When we say the
50:17 word fraction , what do we mean ? What is
50:19 a fraction ? Well , a fraction is something that
50:25 shows parts of a whole , let's say there's this
50:30 lady named Cindy . Cindy has a pizza , which
50:36 is great . She loves pizza . So yummy pizza
50:43 . But then her friend chomsky arrives . You remember
50:46 chomsky chomsky likes pizza too and he's a little bit
50:50 hungry . So maybe Cindy isn't going to eat the
50:53 whole pizza now , maybe they're gonna split it .
50:56 What do you think ? So ? They split the
50:59 pizza in half . Each of them get one half
51:03 of the pizza that neat . Then everyone has pizza
51:08 . Each of them have one half of the pizza
51:11 . They split it right down the middle . Now
51:16 remember a fraction is something that shows parts of a
51:20 whole . So here is what the fraction looks like
51:25 a one a line and the two that is the
51:29 fraction . One half each of them . Cindy and
51:33 chomsky , get one half of the pizza . So
51:39 this is one half . It's a very important fraction
51:43 because we use it all the time . Now ,
51:46 you might be wondering what do the numbers mean ?
51:49 And how does it show one half ? Well ,
51:55 the bottom number shows the total number of parts .
52:01 The top number shows how many parts we are talking
52:05 about . Pretty simple . Let's go back to our
52:09 example . Mhm . There are a total of two
52:15 parts to the pizza , so there's a two on
52:18 the bottom and Cindy just gets one part , that's
52:22 the part we're talking about . So Cindy gets just
52:25 one half of the pizza , she doesn't get the
52:28 whole thing , she gets just one part , she
52:32 gets one half . The bottom number of a fraction
52:37 is called the denominator . The denominator is the total
52:41 number of parts . The top number is called the
52:48 numerator . The numerator tells us how many parts we
52:52 are talking about in this case Cindy is having one
52:57 part of the pizza , the other part of course
52:59 is going to chomsky , let's try this , let's
53:05 say there's another pizza and this pizza has four parts
53:09 . The number four is the denominator because there are
53:14 four pieces of pizza , four parts Mhm Let's say
53:22 kelly shows up and wants to have one part of
53:26 the pizza , one piece of the pizza , the
53:31 numerator or the top number of the fraction is the
53:35 number one because kelly is having one part or one
53:41 piece of the pizza kelly is having 1/4 of the
53:47 pizza . Pretty simple . Pretty fun fractions are awesome
53:53 . Yeah . Now we're going to need your help
53:57 help us figure out what fraction is it ? What
54:03 fraction is it , wow , we're gonna have a
54:06 great time . Let's say we have a group of
54:12 five sports balls . One is a basketball , the
54:16 other four are soccer balls . Let's figure out what
54:22 fraction of the balls are basketballs , What fraction of
54:28 the balls are basketballs ? So we know a fraction
54:36 has a line in the middle and the top number
54:38 is the numerator and the bottom number is the denominator
54:43 . The denominator shows us the total number of parts
54:47 or units . How many sports balls are there ?
54:52 Yeah . 5 . 5 is the denominator . Good
54:59 job . Now remember we're asking for the fraction of
55:04 sports balls that are basketball's . So how many basketballs
55:09 are there ? Yeah , just one . The number
55:16 one is the numerator . So 1/5 of the sports
55:22 balls are basketball's 1/5 . Great job . Let's try
55:29 this final example let's say there are five pets .
55:34 5 pets two of them are dogs and three of
55:38 them are cats . What fraction of the pets are
55:46 cats ? Huh ? That's a good question . What
55:49 fraction of the pets are cats ? Remember ? Here's
55:55 what a fraction looks like . It's got a line
55:57 in the middle with the top number being the numerator
56:00 . And the bottom number is the denominator . So
56:08 the total number of pets is five . What number
56:11 is the denominator ? What number goes on the bottom
56:15 ? Yeah . Yeah . 5 . 5 is the
56:20 denominator . It tells us the total number of pets
56:24 . Mhm . Remember we're asking for the fraction of
56:29 the pets that are cats ? How many cats are
56:33 there ? Yeah . three . So what's the numerator
56:39 ? Yeah . 33 is the numerator . 3/5 of
56:46 the pets are cats , wow that was so cool
56:54 . But none of those catcher is special to me
56:57 . As you Mr whiskers . Not even a fraction
57:00 of my heart belongs to you . My whole heart
57:03 . I love you . Mr Whiskers . I do
57:06 I do . A fraction is something that shows parts
57:12 of a whole . Mhm . The top number of
57:18 a fraction is the numerator . How many parts we
57:21 are talking about ? And the bottom number of a
57:24 fraction is the denominator . The total number of parts
57:31 . Hey petey . I know I know I heard
57:34 about your plane . You know it's a cool plane
57:36 you know and and it's it's neat . I don't
57:39 know if it flies or you you look pretty confident
57:42 that it's gonna fly which is cool . Yeah I
57:45 see you . Hello . Thanks for waving . Thanks
57:49 for saying hello . You know we're actually in the
57:51 middle of learning , we're in the middle of learning
57:53 a lot of new cool things right now . So
57:56 I actually do have to go high . You're still
57:59 waving . Okay . Um we're gonna go because now
58:03 we need to learn about division . Division is such
58:08 an awesome thing to be able to do . And
58:10 you're going to have it all figured out you're gonna
58:12 learn how to divide in this video . We're gonna
58:17 start off with the story . There's this kid named
58:19 Ethan and Ethan loves carrots , he loves carrots so
58:24 much . He loves to snack on him , he
58:27 loves when he gets to eat them . They're crunchy
58:29 , they're tasty . Yeah , carrots are awesome .
58:34 In fact , I'm literally eating a carrot right now
58:37 . As I'm speaking , carrots are great for your
58:39 skin . Carrots are great for your eyes , they're
58:41 amazing . You're a great snack . And Ethan loves
58:45 them . Well , Ethan has two friends over kevin
58:50 and Chloe and they start to get hungry . Yeah
58:55 . Mhm . Of course they all love carrots because
58:58 carrots are like the perfect snack now in Ethan is
59:02 house , there are only three carrots , they're just
59:05 three carats . We are going to have to divide
59:10 the three carats amongst the three kids . So let's
59:14 figure this out . How many carats does each kid
59:18 get , do you know ? Mhm . Uh huh
59:24 . Each kid gets one carat pretty simple , right
59:28 ? Three carats , three kids . Each kid gets
59:31 one carrot . Mhm . Hey did you know we
59:35 just did division ? Uh huh . We just did
59:38 division . Division is pretty simple . You see division
59:43 is splitting a number up by any given number .
59:47 That's it . Just splitting a number up . Let's
59:52 look at our story again , There were three carrots
59:55 . And we divided those three carats by three because
60:00 there are three people . Right ? The three kids
60:03 that love carrots . And the answer of how many
60:06 carats each kid gets is 1 . 3 divided by
60:11 three equals one notice . Right ? Here is the
60:18 division sign . This is what it looks like .
60:21 When you see that sign , you could just say
60:23 divided by . So this reads three , divided by
60:27 three equals one . Let's try another example of division
60:33 . Let's say there are eight presents , eight presents
60:37 . And there are four women . And we want
60:40 each of the women to get the same amount of
60:42 presence as the other women . Because we want it
60:45 to be fair Notice the division sign we are going
60:51 to divide or split up eight x 4 . Remember
60:58 to divide us to split up . Let's split these
61:01 presents up into four equal groups . 1234 All right
61:08 . How many presents does each woman get ? Uh
61:12 huh . To each woman gets to presence . Isn't
61:20 that cool ? Division is so much fun and it's
61:22 so easy . Mhm . Mhm . Remember division is
61:26 splitting a number up by any given number ? That's
61:30 it . All right , now , it's time for
61:37 division facts . We're going to learn some pretty interesting
61:41 facts about division and you're gonna be like oh my
61:46 goodness , like secrets . This is super cool .
61:49 Okay so just look around . All right , make
61:52 sure it's clear . All right . It's time for
61:55 division facts . The first fact is this You can
62:05 never divide by zero . It's true . You can
62:08 never divide by zero . Even if you're a rule
62:11 breaker and you're like I'm gonna do whatever I want
62:14 . You still can never divide by zero . In
62:17 fact , if a teacher ever gives you a test
62:20 and you see a problem where you have to divide
62:23 a number by zero just right on the test undefined
62:27 because that's exactly what that answer would be undefined .
62:31 It's impossible . Kind of like Mr Whiskers Math skills
62:37 does Mr Whiskers do math in his head all day
62:40 long . Who knows ? His Math skills are undefined
62:43 . We just don't know . It's impossible to know
62:46 . You know Mr Whiskers might know how to do
62:48 division . Who knows ? Undefined . You can't divide
62:52 by zero , you can never divide by zero .
62:58 Mhm . If you ever see any division problem dividing
63:04 by zero just right undefined it's impossible it's impossible .
63:09 So just write undefined . The second fact is this
63:16 you can write the division sign three ways . Uh
63:20 huh . Not just with that traditional division sign you
63:24 can write it like the division sign . Or you
63:27 can write a division problem with the slash or with
63:31 a horizontal line For example look at this 12 divided
63:38 by three equals four . That's the original division sign
63:43 . The one that you might see more regularly .
63:47 Mm Yeah but here is the same equation written in
63:51 a different way . 12 divided by three equals four
63:55 . It's still a division sign but it's a slash
63:58 . It means the same thing as the original division
64:02 sign . Okay . Remember the division sign can also
64:06 be a horizontal line . 12 divided by three equals
64:11 four . That looks like a fraction , doesn't it
64:13 ? The line in a fraction means divided by .
64:17 These are the three ways that you can write the
64:24 division sign . Pretty interesting . Alright . The final
64:30 fact is this okay this is so awesome . You
64:37 can flip the number of groups and the number in
64:40 each group and the division problem stays true . For
64:45 example 10 divided by two equals 5 and you can
64:49 flip the two and the five and it stays true
64:55 . Yeah that means 10 divided by five equals two
65:00 . Isn't that interesting . 10 divided by two equals
65:03 five and 10 divided by five equals two . You
65:07 can flip the number of groups and the number in
65:10 each group and it still stays true . Or look
65:14 at this 18 divided by six equals three . Remember
65:18 we can flip the number of groups and the number
65:21 in each group and it still stays true . So
65:24 we could switch the six and the three and it
65:27 stays true . Okay , So 18 divided by three
65:33 equals six . The six and the three can be
65:36 flipped . So 18 divided by six equals three and
65:40 18 divided by three equals six . Pretty nifty .
65:44 Those were some cool facts . You know , division
65:47 is a great time . Division is splitting a number
65:50 up by any given number . It's a lot of
65:53 fun . And we hope you learned a whole lot
65:56 in this video , wow , you completed the video
66:00 . That is so impressive . Well , you might
66:03 notice there's a circle right here on this video page
