03:18 there's something terrible happen . Today's lesson as I said
03:21 , is about how to describe past experiences . So
03:26 just a second . Uh , we're going to look
03:28 at how to use simple past tense to begin today's
03:32 lesson . Okay , I got it . Now ,
03:34 I'll show you this is what we're going to do
03:36 today . So how to describe simple past , how
03:41 to describe experiences in simple past tense . Really ?
03:44 So we're going to talk about basic review , Simple
03:47 past tense , second how to use be with adjectives
03:51 and finally some expressions , some common question and response
03:55 patterns you can use uh in simple past . It's
03:58 so let's begin . Can you do a class about
04:02 some phrases in english ? That's my job . So
04:05 check out our Youtube channel english . Class 101 on
04:08 Youtube . That is literally my job . So please
04:11 check out some of the videos that are out there
04:13 . Okay , let's get started . So let's go
04:17 to first part . Our first part for today is
04:20 our review of simple past tense . Simple past tense
04:25 . What is it ? Quickly ? Quick review .
04:29 Simple past tense . We use simple past tense .
04:31 It's very dark . We use simple past tense to
04:35 describe an action that started and ended in the past
04:40 . Started and ended in the past on a timeline
04:44 . Past is here , present as the star and
04:47 future is here . Imagine your action started and ended
04:52 in the past . Okay , so it's completely finished
04:56 . It's done then . We can use simple past
05:01 tense for repeated past actions , for example with every
05:06 day or every year and so on . So the
05:09 action repeated every week or every day every year in
05:13 the past . We can also use simple past tense
05:16 to do that . Today we are going to focus
05:20 on this one describing an action that started and ended
05:24 in the past . In particular . We're going to
05:27 focus on our feelings about something that happened in the
05:32 past . Okay , cooper . All right , so
05:36 let's go . How do we make a basic past
05:40 tense sentence , a basic past 10 sentence I have
05:43 here positive and negative . How do we make this
05:47 ? It's super , super easy for a simple positive
05:52 sentence or a simple positive expression . We use subject
05:56 like I it he she plus a past tense verb
06:02 or past tense verb past tense verb phrase . Today
06:05 I'm not going to talk about how to make past
06:08 tense verbs . You can check our past tense a
06:11 simple past tense video on the Youtube channel to get
06:14 more information . So simple past tense verb here note
06:18 to make a negative . We use subject plus did
06:23 not plus the base for no change to the verb
06:27 in the negative form subject did not verb for example
06:33 , I ate dinner . Simple past tense I subject
06:40 eight past tense verb and dinner . So my object
06:43 here . What did I eat ? I ate dinner
06:46 . I hate to . Okay 2nd . He watched
06:50 a movie . He watched a movie . Yeah subject
06:54 is he past tense were watched in this case .
06:59 What did he watch a movie ? He watched a
07:02 movie . Okay , negative examples . We didn't go
07:08 to school so we is the subject did not hear
07:13 . I reduced to didn't didn't , we didn't go
07:17 . So no change to my verb . So we
07:20 didn't went to school is incorrect . No , totally
07:24 incorrect . We didn't go to school location . Okay
07:29 . Last one last example sentence they didn't call us
07:35 back . They didn't call us back again . I
07:39 reduced did not in this sentence here . They didn't
07:44 call . So to call someone back means to return
07:47 someone's phone call . Okay , now I want to
07:53 quickly note this question . So many people ask this
07:57 question . So let's refresh simple past or present .
08:00 Perfect . Which one should I use ? Sometimes both
08:04 . Sometimes both are correct . I taught . Uh
08:08 , let's see . Last week I taught a lesson
08:10 about present . Perfect . There are many lessons about
08:13 present . Perfect on the channel and on the facebook
08:16 page . Check them out . But this is an
08:18 example of a case where both simple past and present
08:22 perfect . Are 100 correct . However , the nuance
08:27 changes . What's the deal ? Let's compare . They
08:31 didn't call us back . Here's my simple past tense
08:34 sentence versus They haven't called us back . Okay .
08:39 100 correct . Both . What's the difference here in
08:42 blue ? They didn't call us back . Sounds like
08:46 there's no chance they will call . They haven't called
08:51 us back . Still a chance they will call .
08:55 So remember simple past tense . This pattern here we
08:59 use for actions that started and ended in the past
09:04 . This is true . Even for the negative ,
09:06 they didn't call us back . It's like the chances
09:09 finished or the chance is gone . It's done .
09:12 That situation is finished with simple past with present .
09:16 Perfect . However , there's still a chance up until
09:20 now they have not called us back . Maybe there's
09:23 still a little time . Okay , good . Your
09:27 example sentences are coming in . I'm going to check
09:30 in the chat now . Joran says I bought a
09:33 new Nike hat yesterday . Congrats . That sounds cool
09:36 . Uh Cardiology says I didn't want to leave her
09:38 , but I had to and I did , wow
09:40 , that's a very dramatic example . Nice one .
09:43 Okay . Uh angie angie Marie . Hi said I
09:47 ate vegetables yesterday . I ate vegetables yesterday . Karina
09:51 says we didn't travel to Thailand this year . I
09:54 was thinking about Thailand recently . I want some sun
09:57 . Yeah . Okay . Other examples . Facebook ,
09:59 Send me your examples . Everyone's saying hi youtube ,
10:02 you're crushing it with the examples . Miguel says I
10:05 didn't work today because of the snow . Good .
10:07 Nice example , sentence a present . Perfect one from
10:11 Fadi says I haven't taken a shower yet . Okay
10:14 , good , good , good . Nice example ,
10:16 sentences everyone Okay , I don't see your examples .
10:20 You have facebook facebook . Good luck . Get your
10:23 best . Okay , so this is our beginning for
10:27 today . Simple past tense . What is it ?
10:29 How do we use it ? So we are going
10:32 to use this pattern right here with the verb to
10:36 be to talk about our feelings or our impressions of
10:42 a past situation . So let's go to part two
10:45 for today . All right , so that was part
10:48 one . If you missed it , I will take
10:51 one more quick break and then we'll go to part
10:53 two . Uh , in part one . In Part
10:55 one , sorry . Earlier , I talked about these
10:58 pdf cheat sheets . Uh , I showed you a
11:01 couple of them earlier . Let's see . I'll show
11:04 you this one . This one seems good for today
11:06 . Talking online back here . There are some expressions
11:10 you can use for conversation related things . And I
11:14 showed you this earlier as well . This pdf the
11:17 page , If you check the link below the video
11:21 , if you're watching on Youtube or above the video
11:24 , if you're watching on facebook , you will find
11:27 this page right here . Some of you ask about
11:30 how to get these . You need your name and
11:32 an email address right here To create an account and
11:36 if you have trouble you download here , scroll down
11:39 here to find the steps . You use 1234 to
11:43 check it out . So I know it's all in
11:45 English because we have people from all over the world
11:47 coming , but I think it's easy to understand .
11:51 So please have a look and find them . If
11:53 you have been interested in getting those downloaded . Okay
11:58 good . Let's go to um the next part ,
12:01 part , two parts to using d also a reminder
12:05 if you haven't , please make sure to like this
12:07 video and share this video so other learners can find
12:11 today's lesson . That would be super cool . Okay
12:14 Dokey . Let's go . So here we are part
12:17 two . Using be with adjectives in past tents .
12:22 Using adjectives with be in past tense . So when
12:27 do we need this ? We use this probably every
12:30 day at the end of the day to talk about
12:33 your day to talk about your experiences at the end
12:36 of something . How do we do that ? Let's
12:38 practice . Okay , so to do this , we
12:42 have again are subject then remember I said we use
12:47 a past tense verb right in our in our basic
12:50 simple past tense sentence structure here with the verb E
12:55 . We're going to use was or were I was
13:00 you were , he was and so on . So
13:03 this is still the same verb . Then we use
13:07 our adjective . So remember an adjective is a word
13:11 that describes a noun . So it gives us more
13:15 information about a person about a place or a thing
13:19 . For example , beautiful or expensive or hot .
13:23 These are adjectives to make it negative . We simply
13:27 use not before the adjective . So let's practice .
13:33 The weather was great today , the weather was great
13:37 today . My subject is the weather . Here's my
13:41 past tense verb , the weather was great . Today
13:45 , here is my adjective . Great . You can
13:48 say of course the weather is great today . If
13:51 you're talking in the afternoon for example , the weather
13:55 is great . Now the weather was great , it's
13:58 finished . The day is finished . Another one .
14:02 We were tired this morning . We were tired this
14:08 morning , subject is we plus were my past tense
14:12 verb past tense . B tired is my adjective when
14:17 , This morning . So we were tired this morning
14:21 . You can send me your example sentences in the
14:23 chat . Try to uh , remote control desk .
14:27 Can you look out for people ? Don't send so
14:29 many messages in the chat please , so everyone can
14:32 participate . Okay , my screen is very fuzzy .
14:35 Okay , let's go to the next example , sentence
14:38 them . Next one is the morning news was not
14:43 good . The morning news was not good . Here
14:47 is my subject . The morning news . The morning
14:50 news . So it Was negative . Not good ,
14:56 not good . You can say the morning news was
14:58 bad . Also , 100 correct . The morning news
15:01 was bad . One more from me . She was
15:05 not happy in the meeting . She was not happy
15:09 in the meeting . So this is a very important
15:13 grammar point uh , to like express your feelings and
15:17 to express other people's feelings . I'm coming to look
15:20 for your example sentences now . Salma says the meeting
15:24 was important . Very nice . Okay , can McGee
15:28 ? Our projects are projects was wrapped up by three
15:31 people . Including myself are project was wrapped up to
15:36 peace and wrapped wrapped up by two people . Oh
15:39 , CIA says I was asleep this morning . Very
15:41 good . Okay . Um Jose says on facebook ,
15:45 I was so tired before my shower . Good .
15:47 Eric says yesterday I didn't eat dinner . No ,
15:50 the no article you wrote . I didn't eat the
15:52 dinner . No , the I didn't eat dinner .
15:56 Allah rat time . She was gorgeous in the party
15:59 . Uh note in their use at at She was
16:02 gorgeous at the party . Okay . Uh bob Abdelsalam
16:07 . Sorry if I said that wrong ? I was
16:09 perfectly worked hard at the office . Know perfectly there
16:13 . I worked hard at the office last week .
16:17 Make that a simple past tense uh , statement .
16:20 Yeah . So we use this pattern to express a
16:24 feeling , right ? We're expressing an opinion . It
16:27 was great . I was tired . Uh Not good
16:31 . Not happy . These are like feelings and emotions
16:35 and opinions about something . Okay . All right Let's
16:39 go . Uh next . So verb of course using
16:43 a verb is 100 correct another verb other than be
16:47 . Uh So just remember where this is the practice
16:51 here . So I want to talk about one point
16:55 . So many learners have questions with . That's this
16:58 E . D . Or I . N . G
17:01 . Ending adjectives . Which one should I use ?
17:04 For example , excited , exciting . Which one should
17:07 I use ? This is a very common question .
17:10 So let's talk about it . Here is a rule
17:13 you can use are you talking about your feeling so
17:19 you're feeling or someone else is feeling someone else is
17:23 feeling ? Use the E . D . Ending .
17:26 Are you talking about an object situation behavior ? Something
17:32 outside A person's feeling use I . N . G
17:36 . I . N . G . Form . Let's
17:38 look at some examples because sometimes you send me uh
17:41 sentences . Is this correct ? This correct ? So
17:44 let's look first , let's compare annoyed and this one
17:50 annoyed and annoying . So these two words very similar
17:57 . Obviously annoyed means and I feel unhappy . So
18:01 if you don't know the word annoyed it means when
18:04 I say I feel annoyed it means something is making
18:08 me unhappy , Something repetitive . A loud sound outside
18:13 or a computer problem continues to happen . I feel
18:17 annoyed . So this sentence I am annoyed is correct
18:22 . That is 100 correct . Okay I feel annoyed
18:28 . This sentence is also correct . I am annoying
18:32 , annoying annoying . This word means I cause other
18:38 people to feel annoyed so I may be like I
18:44 make a lot of loud sounds all day . I
18:48 cause people to feel unhappy all day . Like maybe
18:52 I make loud sounds on my computer or I don't
18:57 know , maybe I listen to music really loud anyway
18:59 , I'm annoying . This sentence is 100 correct ,
19:04 but it has a very different meaning from I am
19:08 annoyed . This is negative about my feelings here .
19:12 I'm annoyed . I'm unhappy . Now I'm annoying .
19:16 That means I cause other people to feel unhappy .
19:20 So please be careful . This sentence also correct .
19:24 He is annoyed . He is annoyed . So that
19:28 means now his feeling his personal feeling again . He
19:33 is annoyed is good . So is he is annoying
19:36 ? So annoying . Describe someone's condition or describe someone's
19:41 behavior annoyed describes your feeling that sound is annoying .
19:49 Also correct . So something outside causes me to feel
19:53 this unhappiness . Okay , this one is not correct
19:57 . That sound is annoyed . Not correct at all
20:00 . Doesn't make any sense . Okay . All right
20:05 . I was annoyed because of my work . That's
20:07 fatty a good job . Carlos says it's okay .
20:10 It's clear . I'm I'm really maybe I'm really annoying
20:14 to my siblings . Yeah . Great example , sentence
20:17 . It's fun to be annoying . Do your siblings
20:20 ? Someone says I'm tired of you . Good example
20:24 . Okay . Good . All right , so let's
20:27 go on then . Let's compare this to another one
20:30 . Uh , the kind of the next level one
20:32 . Exciting . Why is this one so much more
20:35 challenging ? We have excite as a verb . That's
20:40 the problem . I see sometimes excited and exciting to
20:44 think about here . So , again , this E
20:46 . D . Ending . I am excited . I
20:49 am excited about something , right ? Or I am
20:53 exciting . I marked this with the question mark .
20:56 I am exciting . Hmm . The reason for this
21:00 question mark is because sometimes it's correct . Sometimes this
21:05 pattern is correct . Why if you say I am
21:08 exciting , Like I am an exciting person . It
21:12 means you cause other people to feel excited . Yeah
21:18 . So you say I am exciting . So it's
21:21 like it's like a big , I guess confident statement
21:24 about yourself . So , this is sometimes correct .
21:28 Probably though you want to say I am excited .
21:32 You are happy about something that's going to happen in
21:37 the future . Okay . Hi , it has a
21:39 good example on facebook . I am excited to watch
21:42 your video . Good example . I'm excited to watch
21:45 the video . Mhm Okay , here's a common error
21:49 . I am excite , I am excited , totally
21:51 incorrect nonsense . Makes no sense . You cannot use
21:54 this . Just take it out of your brain .
21:56 No , I am excited is not correct . We
22:00 see this pattern only in jokes . Only in jokes
22:04 . Okay , all right , New Member . Hello
22:07 Carlos . Welcome on youtube . Okay , here he
22:11 is excited , correct . Again . he is exciting
22:16 . Maybe correct . So he is excited . He
22:19 wants to do something in the future . Something fun
22:23 . Uh , he is exciting means he causes me
22:27 to feel excitement . Okay , so maybe correct depends
22:32 on what you want to communicate here . That movie
22:35 is exciting , correct , causes excitement . That movie
22:40 is excited . Booth does not know . Can't use
22:44 it completely incorrect . Don't use that . That movie
22:48 makes me excited , correct . So , I hope
22:52 you see the theme , you're feeling E . D
22:56 . Ending adjective , object situation or behaviour I N
23:01 . G . So hopefully this helps you avoid mistakes
23:05 in the future . Last point here , this sentence
23:09 that movie excited me is 100 correct , but please
23:14 be careful this excited is not an adjective . This
23:18 is the past tense verb form of excite . This
23:22 is 100 correct , but excited is a verb here
23:27 . Okay , so it depends on how you use
23:30 the word in the sentence . So that's a quick
23:33 guide to E D . And I N G endings
23:37 . Lots of people are writing . I'm excited to
23:40 something . Something I N G I'm excited to eating
23:42 . I'm excited to watching . No , I N
23:45 G at the end of your expression , I'm excited
23:48 to watch . I'm excited to eat . I'm excited
23:51 to go . Okay . No , I ? M
23:53 G at the end of that , some people are
23:56 now writing . I'm exciting to know . No ,
24:00 today's point for many of you is right here .
24:03 I am excited here . I'll put it , I'll
24:06 put it on the board . Yeah , I am
24:10 excited to verb . Today's point . I am excited
24:17 . Two verb verb . This pattern right here .
24:22 I am excited to infinitive . Okay . Not I
24:25 am exciting or I am excited to watching . I
24:30 am excited to infinitive . Okay , cute . All
24:34 right , good . I am excited to sleep ,
24:37 says Ryan . Very nice . Always , Always .
24:40 Okay . Don't flood the chat please . We have
24:43 many chats letters today . Remote controlled ask what's the
24:46 deal ? All right . Let's go to part three
24:50 time is going quickly . So let's go Part three
24:55 today . I want to focus on two very common
24:59 question patterns . So a question you should know how
25:02 to ask and how to respond . These are very
25:06 common . Maybe you don't hear them clearly in speech
25:10 because we say them very fast . Let's look how
25:14 was noun phrase . How was noun phrase ? For
25:18 example , how was school ? How was work ?
25:23 How was your trip ? How was your day ?
25:28 I'll say it again at native speed . We don't
25:31 say how was noun phrase ? We reduce How and
25:35 was they become short together ? How was school ?
25:40 How was work ? How was your trip ? How
25:42 was your day ? They become very , very short
25:47 . This note this same pattern we used earlier was
25:51 so we're using past tense here . How do you
25:55 respond to a question like this may be your teacher
25:59 has asked you in classes . How was your weekend
26:02 ? Right , okay . So how was this thing
26:06 ? It was adjective , It was adjective . This
26:11 it is this now , how was your day ?
26:16 How was your trip ? It was adjective , so
26:20 it was good , it was good , it was
26:24 boring , it was boring , it was easy ,
26:30 it was smooth . So no trouble . Like on
26:33 a business trip it was smooth , smooth . Okay
26:36 I guess it was smooth . So note these sounds
26:41 will reduce . We make these shorter in speech .
26:44 Yeah . So not it was good , it was
26:46 good or it was boring . So this tea becomes
26:51 super soft like gone . It was what it sounds
26:54 like it was , it was easy , it was
26:57 smooth . Okay , so you can ask about any
27:02 noun phrase with this pattern . How was your dinner
27:05 ? How was your trip ? How was your day
27:08 ? And so how was your vacation ? Okay .
27:11 Oh uh Sana wrote house apostrophe s . Quick note
27:16 about uh for writing purposes . This how ? Oh
27:23 my gosh . Okay . I hope you can see
27:26 this . So this right here , this house apostrophe
27:31 s . This means how is how is here ?
27:35 We're using past tense . How was how was when
27:38 you're writing ? Make sure to , right ? How
27:41 was for past tense ? You can't use house apostrophe
27:46 S . For past tense . Okay . Quick note
27:49 . When you're speaking . Don't worry about it ,
27:51 it sounds like it sounds the same . How is
27:53 your work ? How was how was your day ?
27:55 Okay , so Use that one . Oh no ,
28:00 my iphone got too hot sitting in the sun .
28:02 Sorry . All right sorry facebook I'll come back to
28:06 you in a second . So how did noun phrase
28:09 go ? This is the second part I want to
28:12 practice today . How did noun phrase go ? Just
28:16 like this ? How did school go ? How did
28:19 work go ? We use this pattern to ask about
28:24 someone's activity with this pattern . We tend to use
28:29 it for like study or professional situations . For example
28:35 , how did your test go ? How did your
28:38 test go or how did the meeting go ? How
28:43 did the meeting go ? How did the presentation go
28:47 ? How did the presentation go or how did the
28:50 discussion go ? So yes go is here . But
28:56 we are not talking about travel . It means how
29:00 was this thing ? How was this thing at native
29:04 speed ? This sounds like how did your test go
29:07 ? How'd the meeting go ? Hide the presentation go
29:10 ? How'd the discussion go ? So maybe you can
29:12 hear me now . How did that ? How did
29:17 in speech gets reduced ? So it sounds like this
29:22 . How how did your test go ? How did
29:25 the meeting go ? How did the presentation go ?
29:27 You can use this spelling in like text messages to
29:31 your friends or your classmates or your family members .
29:34 Um don't use this informal communication though . Yeah .
29:38 Out out Okay . To respond , use the past
29:43 tense of go here . Yeah . How'd it go
29:47 ? It went . And when we respond to this
29:51 question , usually we use a word like we don't
29:55 use an adjective , like beautiful or expensive . We
29:59 choose a word from good to bad . Yeah .
30:02 Somewhere in there , either it was really good or
30:05 terrible , horrible superbad . For example , it went
30:09 awfully awfully , awfully means very bad . It went
30:13 badly . He went okay , It went good ,
30:17 it went great . Or you can remove it went
30:22 , it went , you can say perfectly or as
30:26 planned , it went as planned . That means I
30:29 had a schedule or I had a plan and this
30:33 thing my noun phrase was perfect . It was according
30:37 to my plan . Okay . Alright , examples .
30:43 My phone has cooled down . Sorry , facebook ,
30:45 I lost you there second . My phone didn't like
30:48 the sun . Okay , so this is how we
30:52 use these two expressions , so you should know how
30:55 to ask these questions . Yeah , they're important .
31:00 All right . Some of you are saying how did
31:02 your work go ? Good , Okay , how was
31:05 your english class ? It was amazing . Excellent examples
31:09 . Okay , Good , Good , good . Alright
31:11 . Uh Very nice . How did your business appointments
31:14 go ? Says jermaine ? Good , good , good
31:16 . How is your english teacher ? Good . Alright
31:19 . How did your livestream go ? Great . Excellent
31:22 . Eric says Apostrophe D could be would . Yes
31:27 , yes , that is 100 correct . I'm not
31:30 going to talk about it today , I have talked
31:32 about it in many other lessons , but this question
31:37 is about this reduced sound we use uh in this
31:42 case this comes after , you know , I or
31:47 he or she like your subject , your pronoun ,
31:50 so I'd shed he'd In those cases it means would
31:57 . So you may hear some cases where in speech
32:01 this is reduced , like how would you like to
32:04 blah , blah , blah ? How would you like
32:05 to do something ? You might hear it in those
32:08 cases too , so yeah , it's a different grammar
32:11 point . I'm not going to cover today , but
32:13 yes , you can also use that sound uh to
32:17 refer to would Okay , cule All right , we've
32:22 got to finish there for today . Oh my gosh
32:24 . Uh it is late as always , so we'll
32:27 finish up there for today . Uh , someone says
32:30 , can you repeat one more time ? I just
32:32 joined now this is being recorded as always . Please
32:36 review the video on facebook or youtube . Once it's
32:39 finished , I will show you today's lesson boards if
32:42 you want to take a screenshot . This is from
32:44 before the lesson though . So the extra notes are
32:47 not here , but use your brain . Okay .
