03:38 Where's my mouse ? Okay . I want to show
03:40 you today's lesson boards . Today's lesson boards look like
03:44 this . You can take a screenshot now or later
03:47 . Boom . Okay . So first we're going to
03:49 look at how to tell a story with simple past
03:52 tense review . Yeah . Then we'll look at Using
03:55 past perfect tense and the difference between these two .
03:58 What's the deal ? Finally , we're going to look
04:01 at a sample story and one quick tip that lots
04:05 of people ask me about . That seems to cause
04:07 confusion . So let's begin . Okay , great facebook
04:12 , everybody's good . Everybody's good . Okay , let's
04:14 get to simple past tense . How do we use
04:17 simple past tense first and then we'll talk about the
04:21 differences between this and past . Perfect . So let
04:25 us begin simple past tense first in blue . When
04:29 do we use simple past tense ? We use simple
04:33 past tense for actions that started and ended in the
04:38 past . So imagine on a timeline , past present
04:43 that's now and the future . Our actions started and
04:47 ended in the past . It's complete . It's finished
04:52 with simple past tense . There is a specific time
04:55 period or a specific point in time . So the
04:59 action this happened yesterday or last week or last summer
05:06 , something like that or it could have been maybe
05:09 over the last week something something that you did at
05:13 a specific point in time . Okay . We can
05:17 also use this to talk about repeated past actions with
05:22 every day or every week or every year . For
05:25 example like I went to the gym every day last
05:29 week or I ate vegetarian every day last month .
05:34 So we can talk about repeated past actions with this
05:38 grammar points . So let's look at some examples ,
05:42 basic examples and you you're if you are watching live
05:46 or you just want some practice you can send ,
05:48 what did you do last weekend ? Send a comment
05:51 a past 10 simple past tense sentence to answer this
05:55 question . What did you do last week ? So
05:58 some examples . I went to the office yesterday ,
06:02 simple past tense , completed action . When did it
06:06 happen yesterday ? I went to the office yesterday or
06:11 we had coffee last week . We had coffee last
06:16 week . So again past tense verb . When did
06:20 it happen ? Last week ? Okay . Next one
06:24 . She helped me study . She helped me study
06:29 in this sentence . We don't have like a specific
06:31 point in time but in speech or in writing we
06:36 often understand this from the context . So maybe she
06:40 helped me study for a situation . Okay one more
06:45 . They planned a trip . They planned a trip
06:50 . Finally last one . Then I'll talk about some
06:52 other points negative , remember negative also . So an
06:56 action that did not happen in the past . An
06:59 action that did not happen in the past , he
07:02 didn't leave the house , he didn't leave the house
07:06 . Okay a couple of points . one these verbs
07:10 helped and planned our regular verbs that means to make
07:16 the past tense form . We include E . D
07:19 . At the end of the verb . Yeah .
07:21 Little review help becomes helped , plan becomes plant .
07:26 These are irregular , go becomes went and have becomes
07:30 half . Okay so key point we use this for
07:35 actions that started and ended in the past . Okay
07:38 some of your examples are coming . So I'm going
07:41 to try to read lots of them have facebook ,
07:44 facebook sorry facebook and add in my way . It's
07:47 very irritating . Ok you to welcome to you first
07:50 . Uh G . D . Says I went To
07:52 meet a friend last week . Perfect . Nice one
07:54 . Megumi says I went grocery shopping last sunday .
07:57 Perfect . Great job , cosmology . I bumped into
08:00 an old friend last weekend and we had a great
08:02 chat . Very nice . Miguel says I got a
08:05 new job last week , is that true ? Congratulations
08:07 , that's cool . Gustavo . I worked the whole
08:10 day . Your spelling holds , that means hold like
08:13 to hold this board whole W H O L E
08:17 . I worked the whole day . Okay , facebook
08:20 , I can see you now . Rosalina says I
08:22 went to the clinic last saturday . Good . Okay
08:25 . Jacqueline says I visited new york last year .
08:28 Perfect . Very nice . Okay . Um someone's talking
08:33 about using , showing the forms of this verb .
08:35 I'm not going to talk a lot about the details
08:39 of how to make this tense today because I have
08:42 many videos that already do that . If you want
08:45 some more information about how to make simple past tense
08:48 , you can check the videos on our channel .
08:51 The english class one on one Youtube channel . I'll
08:53 put a link after the after this lesson . I
08:56 will put links to how to make this grammar .
09:00 Uh so you can check it out for some review
09:02 . Hope that helps you . A D . V
09:04 . Says I saw your video . So I saw
09:06 your video last week . Good . Yeah . You
09:08 says I went for a walk yesterday . Good .
09:11 Oh my gosh , there are so many melissa says
09:14 I went to my boyfriend's house . Good . Um
09:16 Okay , everybody . Nice job . Super , super
09:19 good job with simple past tense . Great . You
09:22 crush it . Very nice . A plus . Okay
09:25 , so this is how we use simple past tense
09:28 , basic basic grammar . Right ? So we'll take
09:32 a short break and then we'll look at past perfect
09:35 tense and the differences between past perfect and simple past
09:39 tense and how to use them together . Because this
09:42 confuses some people I think . Okay so um if
09:46 you miss it there is free stuff for you from
09:50 the link below the video . If you're watching this
09:52 on Youtube about the video . If you're watching this
09:55 on facebook check it out . There are vocabulary pdf
09:59 . So to help you boost your vocabulary , grab
10:05 the wrong paper to help you boost your vocabulary .
10:08 This one here's a good one . Maybe this one
10:10 is about planning your time . This one is maybe
10:13 good for today's lesson because there are lots and lots
10:17 of time related phrases on this sheet . You can
10:22 use this to boost your vocabulary about time and planning
10:27 related expression . So check this one out . You
10:30 can find this from the link above or below .
10:32 Check it . Okay anyway great so let's go to
10:36 part two past perfect tense . Now , what is
10:40 the deal with past ? Perfect tense . Also ,
10:43 if you haven't , please , please , please make
10:45 sure to like the video . It helps the algorithms
10:48 find and share the video with other people . Also
10:51 share if you like to . All right , if
10:53 you want to see today's lesson boards again , here
10:56 they are . But Okay , so we talked about
11:00 simple past tense . Now let's go to past perfect
11:03 tense . What is the difference here ? That is
11:05 a very common question . So let's talk about it
11:09 . Okay , past perfect tense . What is this
11:14 grammar point ? So past perfect tense . Past perfect
11:18 tense actually is pretty simple when you think about it
11:22 . We use past perfect for a past action that
11:27 happened before . A different past action or condition .
11:34 So visually , let's look at an image . Here's
11:39 a timeline again . Yeah , here's the present .
11:41 Here's now . here's the future . We don't want
11:44 to think about that today . Past okay , past
11:48 perfect is used before another past action . So when
11:53 you make a sentence using simple past tense , like
11:56 we just practice . Like I went to the office
11:59 yesterday and in the same sentence or in the same
12:03 situation , you want to describe another action that happened
12:08 before that or another condition . You use past perfect
12:14 tense to do that . This I think in speech
12:18 were a little more flexible about it . Like it's
12:21 we can understand from context , but when you're writing
12:25 this , this can be very , very important because
12:28 you need to show the sequence of events when you're
12:31 writing and you can't communicate and clarify with the person
12:36 you're listening or the person listening to you . So
12:39 we use this together with simple past tense . So
12:44 what does this look like ? What does this look
12:47 like ? There are many different ways that we use
12:51 this in terms of uh showing uh one action happened
12:57 before another . By that . I mean a few
13:00 different patterns . So let's look at them . Here's
13:02 a very basic one in these sentences . I wrote
13:06 the simple past verb in blue and the past perfect
13:10 point in red . Okay , so when I arrived
13:15 , the meeting had started . When I arrived ,
13:19 the meeting had started . So that means I arrived
13:22 here , the meeting started here . The meeting started
13:27 before I arrived . I used past perfect tense to
13:31 describe that . So in this sentence we don't know
13:34 how long this time period is , but we just
13:38 want to express this action . The meeting starting happened
13:43 before this action me arriving . Okay . When I
13:47 arrived , the meeting had started , you might say
13:50 when I arrived , the meeting had already started .
13:55 Okay mm . Uh some people are sending past 10
14:02 sentences . Okay , good . Is it live ?
14:04 Yes . Hello . It is live . What's up
14:05 ? Oh my gosh . Facebook . What's the deal
14:07 with your ads ? So many ? Okay . Okay
14:10 . So you can send , here's your homework chat
14:12 . Everyone in chat while I go through the examples
14:15 described to past connected actions . Using simple past and
14:20 past . Perfect . Okay . All right , so
14:23 let's go to another example . Here's a negative one
14:27 . I hadn't eaten lunch yet so I was hungry
14:33 . I hadn't eaten lunch yet so I was hungry
14:36 . So this is a negative . Yeah , this
14:39 action did not happen . So the action is eating
14:41 lunch . I had not eaten . This is the
14:45 reduced form . I have not eaten lunch yet ,
14:48 expectations . So I was hungry . Past tense .
14:52 I was hungry . I haven't eaten lunch yet ,
14:54 so I was hungry . Ooh , Magyar elite of
14:58 Iran . I hope I said your name right on
15:00 Youtube . Said the traffic was bad because a car
15:02 had broken down on the road . Very nice .
15:04 Very nice example , sentence Okay . Uh Andrew says
15:08 when I saw him he had already left . Good
15:10 job . Very nice . Cardiology . Said I submitted
15:12 our project on time because I had already prepared it
15:15 . Very nice . Okay . John on facebook says
15:18 when I departed the ship had gone away . Great
15:21 . Abdul maybe when I arrived when I arrived ,
15:24 the plane had taken off and then it's perfect .
15:27 Okay . Like mir says when I arrived , my
15:30 class had started . Great , Very nice examples .
15:33 Everyone okay onto the next one . This one this
15:37 type of sentence I think sometimes is confusing because of
15:41 this part right here by the time . So let's
15:43 look at it first . Let's read . By the
15:46 time I graduated from university , I had written three
15:51 research papers . So once more , by the time
15:55 I graduated from university I had written three research papers
16:02 . So here's my past tense verb graduated . This
16:05 one's here . I had written three research papers .
16:11 So that happened before graduation , right ? We understand
16:15 that . But this part right here sometimes confuses .
16:19 I think this by the time , by the time
16:22 , why not ? When you can say when actually
16:25 it's correct to say when , when I graduated from
16:28 university , I had written three research papers . So
16:32 why ? By the time here , what is that
16:34 telling us ? That means up until this point ,
16:39 up until this point I had done this . Yeah
16:45 . So it's like saying it gives more of a
16:48 continuing feeling . So like maybe maybe in the future
16:53 I'm going to write more or maybe after graduation I
16:57 wrote more research papers so you can use wen or
17:01 by the time . But this by the time I
17:05 did something shows like kind of a deadline for that
17:10 action . Yeah . Okay . Alright . Other example
17:15 sentences uh Nasser says when I got to the cinema
17:19 , the film had started . Very nice example .
17:21 Okay . Uh Andre says I was thirsty because I
17:25 hadn't drank anything . I hadn't I hadn't drunk anything
17:29 , so I hadn't drunk anything . Okay . Alright
17:33 . Other examples . All right . I don't see
17:37 other examples . So think about this . You can
17:40 send some more for part three and I will try
17:42 to check in real time . All right . Good
17:46 . Okay . It's a bit longer . Right ?
17:48 This one you have to think a little bit right
17:50 to actions in the same uh same sentence . Right
17:54 ? But again , this is a super important grammar
17:57 point . When you're writing , you need to make
17:59 it clear which action was first , in which action
18:03 was second . If you can't You need to learn
18:06 this grammar point , it's very important . But if
18:09 this is difficult for you a way to get around
18:12 it , you can use short sentences passed 10 sentences
18:16 and say after that next and so on . But
18:20 if you want to be a good writer , a
18:21 professional sounding person , please learn to use past perfect
18:26 tense . Okay good then let's go to part three
18:31 . What time is it ? Okay . Yeah ,
18:32 we need to go to part three . So in
18:34 part three now I'm going to put these together and
18:38 show you how simple past tense and past perfect tense
18:43 are used in speech or in writing . It's going
18:46 to be very very basic . But I mean everyday
18:48 stories are important to be able to tell . All
18:52 right , Let's go . So parched three . Let's
18:56 go . Oh yes , sorry , check the link
18:59 below the video . If you want to find vocabulary
19:02 and phrases PDFs to check out . I'll show you
19:05 again later too . But I want to get to
19:07 part three . It's important . So first quick tip
19:11 , quick tips . Uh , this right here causes
19:15 confusion with past . Perfect when you use have in
19:21 past . Perfect . The result is had had ,
19:25 I had had something , something I had had ,
19:28 where I'd had and people say , is that right
19:31 ? There are two hades next to each other .
19:33 That seems wrong . It's correct . It's totally correct
19:36 . I know it seems crazy . So I had
19:40 had too much to drink so my roommate drove us
19:45 home , I had had too much to drink so
19:49 my roommate drove us home , my past tense ,
19:52 so I had had is correct . Please note that
19:55 so many people ask that question is had had correct
19:59 . Okay , let's look now at a sample story
20:03 . This is a very boring story . It's actually
20:07 my story from yesterday . This is a very boring
20:10 story , but it's an example of what we can
20:13 do to explain our day with these two grammar points
20:18 . So again , I have in blue underlying simple
20:22 past tense and in red . Underline past . Perfect
20:28 . So let's look at this story . How do
20:30 we use these together first . Yesterday I went to
20:34 the office , I needed to pick up a package
20:38 and make some new videos before the shoot , I
20:43 had had some time to review the content . We
20:49 finished everything on time . Okay , so very basic
20:55 story . Very boring story . A native speed .
20:58 Here's how I would say this . Yesterday I went
21:00 to the office . I needed to pick up a
21:02 package and make some new videos . Before the shoot
21:05 , I had some time to review the content .
21:06 We finished everything on time . So that's how I
21:09 might express this in speech to someone that I know
21:12 maybe a little bit faster even . Yeah , someone
21:15 writes ha ha ha ha sounds weird . I know
21:17 . Right . So what's going on ? This is
21:21 a past tense sentence . Yesterday I went to the
21:23 office completed action . I needed to pick up a
21:26 package and make some new videos , completed action .
21:30 So needed here , note that this part is not
21:32 past tense . I needed to picked up , not
21:34 correct . I'm using this . Have to need to
21:38 grammar here . So only this verb is in past
21:40 tense . Okay . I needed to pick up a
21:43 package and make some new videos then here before the
21:47 shoot , I had had some time to review the
21:51 content . So what's the deal here before the shoot
21:54 ? So , the shoot means the time at which
21:58 I'm making videos . Before the shoot , I've had
22:01 some time to review the content . So I'm talking
22:04 about something that happened before another action before the shoot
22:08 . I've had some time to review the content ,
22:11 then past tense . We finished everything on time .
22:14 Simple past . So this is how we use these
22:18 to grammar points together . It's very common to use
22:21 lots of simple passed and then one like past perfect
22:24 expression here and there to show the sequence to show
22:28 the relationship between the two past actions . Okay ,
22:32 so if you want some homework , you can try
22:35 making a sample story about your day . Maybe yesterday
22:38 boring story is okay . All right . Um mushtaq
22:44 says I had had finished . No , you don't
22:45 need had had finished . You need had had only
22:49 if you use have plus the past . Perfect .
22:52 So I didn't talk about how to make past perfect
22:55 . In this lesson , I don't have time to
22:57 talk about all of these grammar points but to make
23:00 past Perfect . We use pad plus the past participle
23:06 form of the verb . Yeah . Past Part two
23:09 Simple form . Okay , this is how to make
23:13 the basic past perfect uh structure . I had past
23:19 participle so had had is only used when this verb
23:26 . The past participle form of the verb is have
23:28 . Yeah . So I had finished is correct .
23:31 I had you know eton so don't use had had
23:35 finished or had had started . Okay . Others today
23:40 we have homework . You always have homework . There's
23:43 always homework for these classes . It's just up to
23:45 you to do it . Do you have instagram ?
23:49 Yes . I always say this . It's in the
23:50 link below the video on Youtube . If you're watching
23:53 on facebook , please check youtube . You can find
23:55 the link there . Find me at asia in Tokyo
23:58 . Okay . All right . It's very bright .
24:02 I can't see what time it is . What time
24:03 is it ? Okay . All right . I have
24:06 a couple more minutes so I have time to read
24:08 your example sentences . I'm looking for your um Your
24:15 two actions in one sentence . Examples . All right
24:22 . I'm looking for you and looking for you .
24:26 I had had a headache so I went to sleep
24:29 early . I needed to get up early to receive
24:31 my lessons . I hadn't finished my schedule yet .
