00:09 to weekly words . My name is Alicia and today
00:11 we're going to talk a boot famous american dishes .
00:16 Let's begin . I'm guessing this is not going to
00:18 be about ceramics , Philly cheesesteak man , I'm really
00:22 hungry . Okay , Philly cheesesteak . It's a sandwich
00:24 , is a sandwich , but there's pieces of steak
00:27 and there's cheese melted on top of it . It's
00:29 a fairly simple concept really . It's just a hot
00:31 sandwich , but steak and cheese and it's so good
00:34 filly is short for philadelphia where the sandwich is very
00:37 popular in a sentence . If you go to philadelphia
00:39 , make sure you try a Philly cheesesteak buffalo wings
00:43 , Buffalo wings not made from actual buffalo buffalo wings
00:46 are actually just chicken wings , but they're really spicy
00:49 . I wonder why we call them buffalo wings because
00:50 of this type of sauce . Anyway , it's just
00:53 a spicy chicken wing and you can dip them in
00:55 like ranch dressing , you can have them with vegetables
00:57 , whatever they're very popular food at bars , sports
01:00 bars in a sentence . Buffalo wings are my favorite
01:02 thing to eat while I watch the football game .
01:04 Next is A . B . L . T .
01:06 B . L . T . Stands for bacon ,
01:08 lettuce , tomato . This is a very popular type
01:10 of sandwich . Maybe you can guess the ingredients based
01:13 on the name . It's just a delicious sandwich .
01:15 Sometimes people will put a few more things on like
01:17 maybe mayonnaise , mustard . I don't know . Chicken
01:20 . Who knows ? Whatever the sky is , the
01:22 limit . Go crazy with your BLT at a few
01:24 more letters in there in a sentence . The B
01:26 . L . T . Is one of my favorite
01:28 sandwiches , hush puppies . Oh man , you're killing
01:31 me with the food , hush puppies . A savory
01:34 food made from cornmeal batter that is deep fried or
01:36 baked rolled into a ball . Or maybe it's a
01:39 different shape . I'm gonna try this very soon .
01:42 I think this sounds delicious , hush puppies are a
01:44 great side dish for clam chowder . Maybe find out
01:48 . Leave us a comment guest . I don't have
01:51 really inexperienced with southern food . I'm not from the
01:53 south but we have , he's not gonna be on
01:54 camera but you're gonna hear his voice , keith has
01:56 joined us to explain the magic of hush puppies hush
02:00 puppies . They're just little fried balls of dough that
02:03 you have as a side dish usually with usually seafood
02:06 . I seem like are they good with clam chowder
02:09 head with fried fish , fried fish ah In replacement
02:14 of fries sometimes with seafood fish and chips . But
02:18 those are the chips and you know where they're called
02:20 hush puppies ? Why ? Because when they made them
02:23 and dogs were barking because you know they wanted to
02:26 eat some fish , they were frying . Uh they
02:28 made these little fried balls to give the dogs to
02:30 get them to be quiet . Is that a real
02:32 story ? I hope it's true . I think that's
02:34 a great story . If that's actually true . I
02:36 didn't do any research . I heard that as a
02:37 kid . Okay . What if the Children of a
02:39 puppy that could be it too ? What if we're
02:41 the ones that are just making all the noise and
02:43 like mom Wednesday , they're gonna be ready and like
02:45 here eat this ball grits . Grits is a southern
02:48 food that I have not tried myself . Actually ,
02:51 Grits are corn based . That's about all I know
02:54 , but there's butter on top of it . So
02:56 it's essentially just like corn based and butter seems in
03:00 a sentence . I like to eat grits every morning
03:03 for breakfast . I'm aware of grits . Grits aware
03:07 they're very popular in the south . They're usually for
03:10 breakfast . You have them with eggs and bacon on
03:15 the side . There never sweet . Some people had
03:18 butter to my , I like to have them with
03:20 salt and pepper . Some people had cheese . I
03:22 don't do cheese . So what do they taste like
03:25 ? Got the consistency of oatmeal , It's made out
03:27 of corn and they're always so taut . I like
03:31 them , not every day , but every once in
03:33 a while , they're great . I'm going to go
03:34 to the south . Thanks keith . Thanks for telling
03:37 us about hush puppies and grits . Okay , sorry
03:40 to bother you . Okay , thank you . Oh
03:46 , the more you know , that's the end of
03:48 food . American , popular american dishes . I'm so
03:52 hungry . I hope that you have a chance to
03:53 try some of these . Thank you very much for
03:55 joining us this week . We'll see you again next
03:57 time when we talk about maybe more food . Who
04:00 knows by . We'll get this candy . I don't
04:03 know , go big or go home . It has
04:08 mono saturated fatty acids . Great . Hi everybody .
04:13 My name is Alicia and this is top words .
04:16 Today's topic is 10 foods to make you live longer
04:19 . So let's talk about it . Avocado . Avocado
04:23 . Avocado is delicious . It's green , it's about
04:26 this big , you cut it and you eat it
04:29 and it's awesome . Avocados actually contain more potassium than
04:33 bananas . You can use avocado to make guacamole for
04:37 example , which is a very popular dish . You
04:39 can put it in salads , which is something I
04:41 like to do . Check out japanese pod 101 to
04:43 find resa who loves avocado banana . You peel a
04:48 banana from the top . You take the stem thing
04:50 . Just , I actually really truly , I ate
04:53 a banana in a smoothie this morning and it was
04:55 delicious . That's a popular way to eat bananas .
04:58 Blueberry a berry , which is blue . Blueberries are
05:02 really , really good at helping burn fat . You
05:05 could use them in a desert as well . Alternatively
05:08 , I've seen recipes or you bake blueberries into things
05:11 like muffins . For example , if you want to
05:13 include blueberries in something else , like I just talked
05:17 about muffins , we say bake into something something .
05:21 So for example , I'm going to bake blueberries into
05:24 my muffins later . Fish , Fish , fish .
05:29 I'm all about the fish . Let's talk about you
05:32 and me and fish . So fish are high in
05:34 omega three fatty acids . So it's a very ,
05:37 very popular health food . They're rich in good fats
05:40 . They also have a lot of protein in them
05:42 and additionally they're delicious fish and chips . Fish cooking
05:45 tips , Let's go garlic , garlic . Oh ,
05:49 garlic is very important if you are very worried about
05:51 vampires , vampires . On the medical side , garlic
05:54 is delicious , garlic is used in a lot of
05:57 different foods . You can slice garlic or you can
06:00 make it even smaller , which is to mince garlic
06:02 . So it's these tiny , tiny little pieces um
06:05 that are cut even further from from a sliced piece
06:08 that's called to minsk green tea . Green tea .
06:11 Green tea is excellent . Green tea is so delicious
06:14 . One of the effects of green tea is supposedly
06:17 to help protect cells in your body from damage and
06:20 thereby reducing the effects of aging and breaking down in
06:23 the body . It's a fairly healthy way to get
06:26 caffeine . If you're a caffeine drinker , macadamia nut
06:29 . Next is macadamia nut . Macadamia nuts are delicious
06:33 . I feel that they are often used in Hawaiian
06:36 cuisine a lot . We have the noun , a
06:38 snack , something that you can eat just between meals
06:42 if you like , but we also can use it
06:44 as a verb to snack on , blah blah blah
06:46 . So I like to snack on macadamia nuts after
06:50 lunch . For example , oatmeal . Oatmeal is the
06:53 next food on our list . There are a lot
06:55 of different kinds of oatmeal . Actually it's rich in
06:58 fiber , fiber is known for helping helping food pass
07:01 through the digestive system more smoothly . So oatmeal can
07:05 be beneficial for that . A lot of people like
07:08 to eat oatmeal for breakfast in the morning , you
07:10 can eat it hot or you can eat cold whatever
07:13 you like to do . My boss also eats just
07:14 plain oatmeal and water for lunch , oatmeal is very
07:17 popular with raisins as well . The two seem to
07:20 complement each other nicely red wine . So the next
07:24 word , The next drink on this list is red
07:26 wine . Yes , it's an alcohol . Red wine
07:28 is said to be beneficial to your health because it
07:32 is high in antioxidants . So antioxidants protect the lining
07:36 of blood vessels and your heart . So ingesting moderate
07:39 amounts of red wine is said to be said to
07:41 be good for you or can have positive effects on
07:44 the body . I drink red wine when I'm out
07:46 with my friends . Usually though , maybe sometimes I
07:48 have a glass at home tofu . It's a really
07:51 popular source of protein for people who are vegetarians or
07:55 vegans . I'm like super into tofu . Like the
07:58 last week and a half . I have been eating
08:00 so much tofu , I'm loving it . But usually
08:03 if you buy tofu , it comes in , it
08:05 comes in a package and there's water inside it to
08:08 keep the tofu moist until you're about to cook it
08:10 . So you have to drain the water from the
08:12 tofu . And usually I wrap mine and paper towels
08:14 and then and then put a heavy bowl on top
08:16 of it to squeeze out the excess moisture before I
08:19 use it . That's the end of 10 foods that
08:22 will help you to live longer . So I hope
08:24 that you picked up a few new cooking vocabulary words
08:27 , cooking and food related vocabulary words if you have
08:30 a favorite food um that you think is really ,
08:34 really good or if you know of some other foods
08:36 that may be beneficial for your health , please share
08:39 them in a comment . Uh If you enjoyed this
08:42 video also , please please please make sure to subscribe
08:44 to our channel so that you don't miss more information
08:47 as it becomes available . Thanks very much for watching
08:49 this episode and we will see you again soon .
08:51 Bye . Yeah . Yeah . I don't open avocados
08:55 . Open avocados , wow this . And to open
08:58 to open your banana . Why ? Oh my God
09:02 , it was so delicious . So I made cream
09:04 cheese with tofu . Oh my God , Becky .
09:08 Look at her . Tofu . Like seriously ! 10
09:12 few words of peculiar history . Hi everybody . My
09:14 name is Alicia . Welcome back to top words .
09:17 Today . We're going to be talking about 10 foods
09:19 that will kill you faster . Oh , bacon .
09:23 Bacon . Bacon is delicious . It's usually thin or
09:27 maybe slightly thicker strips of pork meat that you typically
09:31 fry or you can bake salt and fat . I
09:35 eat bacon maybe once a month . These days ,
09:37 candy , candy sweets , all the manufactured , sugary
09:43 sweet stuff . All of it is called Candy .
09:46 Candy is not good for you because it's just sugar
09:49 , sugar and food coloring and high fructose corn syrup
09:55 in a sentence . I try not to eat any
09:58 candy , but every once in a while I give
10:00 in energy drinks . Popular energy drinks . Uh ,
10:05 let's see , Monster Red Bull energy drinks are bad
10:08 because of the caffeine for one large amounts of caffeine
10:12 , large amounts of sugar , often food coloring and
10:15 so on . Try to limit your consumption of energy
10:19 drinks . Too much can be very damaging to your
10:22 health , frozen meals , frozen meals . It's an
10:26 entire meal in a package and you can just put
10:28 it in your oven or put it in your microwave
10:30 , heat it up in your dinner or lunch or
10:32 whatever is ready . Those frozen meals have a ton
10:36 of salt . Many , many frozen meals use preservatives
10:39 to keep the , to keep whatever is in the
10:42 package from going bag from becoming rotten in a sentence
10:46 . I don't like eating frozen meals . I just
10:49 don't think they taste good instant noodles , instant noodles
10:54 , instant noodles . Cup ramen is a very ,
10:56 very popular brand of instant noodles . All you need
10:59 to do is pour hot water over the dried noodles
11:02 and there's usually some kind of flavor pack . They're
11:05 very , very cheap and it's filling . So in
11:08 a sentence when I was in college , I ate
11:11 instant noodles every day and I felt terrible . That's
11:14 not true margarine . The next word on this list
11:18 is margarine . Margarine . Margarine is very , very
11:22 similar to butter . It's used as a spread ,
11:24 a partially hydrogenated oil content of margarine is much higher
11:27 than butter . If memory serves me correctly , this
11:30 actually builds up in the body , Your body just
11:33 can't break it down . Like if you consume too
11:35 much of this , it just hangs out in your
11:37 body . In a sentence . In my family ,
11:39 we use margarine every day when I was growing up
11:42 , microwave . Popcorn , microwave popcorn , microwave popcorn
11:46 is popcorn that comes in a flat bag . You
11:49 just put it in the microwave and turn it on
11:51 and pop up up up up and you have microwave
11:54 popcorn , usually butter flavor and maybe salt flavored ,
11:57 whatever it's delicious and you can eat it while you
11:59 watch a movie . Great fun . This is bad
12:02 for you because there's butter and salts and oils on
12:05 the inside of that bag and it has to be
12:08 kept preserved . So there's a lot of salt content
12:10 . There are also preservatives in that . But all
12:12 of those things are not so good for you .
12:15 Let's get some microwave popcorn at the supermarket for our
12:18 movie . Later potato chips , potato chips . I
12:22 love potato chips . I am a chip junkie .
12:25 I love potato chips , but they are terrible for
12:27 you . Carbs themselves are not bad . We need
12:30 carbohydrates of course , but potato chips are just empty
12:35 , meaning they are nothing But uh carbohydrates also ,
12:39 potato chips are fried , which is so that's oil
12:42 . Uh There's also salt with potato chips . There
12:45 might also be flavorings added to potato chips , salt
12:48 and vinegar I think , or sour cream and onion
12:50 chips . Their barbecue chips , all these different flavorings
12:53 are not natural and you're eating them . I love
12:57 potato chips , even though I know they're terrible for
13:00 you processed meat , processed meat , processed meat for
13:04 example , hot dogs , sandwich , lunch meat .
13:07 A lot of the meats that you see in the
13:09 supermarket in a package . Maybe it's shaped in a
13:12 circle or a hot dog , for example in wrapped
13:15 in plastic like that . It's a combination of all
13:19 of the leftover parts of an animal ground together and
13:23 then put into a tube some other shape . Of
13:27 course , processed meat is often very convenient if you're
13:29 busy or sometimes you just have a craving for a
13:32 hot dog . It's easy to buy easy to cook
13:35 . Easy to use in a sentence . I try
13:38 not to buy process to meet because when I eat
13:40 it I feel bad . Soda soda soda also contains
13:45 food coloring , sugar , high fructose , corn syrup
13:48 , things which are quite famous for breaking down teeth
13:52 . So drinking a lot of soda can have a
13:54 very , very negative impact on your body as a
13:57 whole , on your digestive system as a whole and
13:59 it can affect your skin . Many people have sugar
14:02 sensitive skin . So someone who drinks a lot of
14:05 soda for some people , they may have a lot
14:07 of acne as a result of their sugar intake .
14:09 So that's the end of 10 foods that may kill
14:13 you faster . Oh no . Some , some of
14:15 my favorite foods like bacon were on that list .
14:17 And potato chips . Oh no . But if you
14:20 have a food that you just love but that you
14:22 know is terrible for you share it with us .
14:25 We've been the comments . Uh , if you haven't
14:27 already , please make sure to subscribe to our channel
14:30 and we will see you again next time for some
14:32 more fun stuff . Thanks very much for watching by
14:35 trying to holla at me sandwiches are not funny .
14:39 I want to speak real english from your first lesson
14:42 . Sign up for your free lifetime account at english
14:45 class 101 dot com . Hi everybody welcome back to
14:49 top words . My name is Alicia and today we're
14:51 going to be talking about american food . So let's
14:54 get started . Apple pie . The first food is
14:58 apple pie . Apple pie is a delicious and sweet
15:01 american dessert . It is as it sounds , it
15:04 is a pie , so a bit of crust and
15:06 on the inside is apple Fresh Apple . I hope
15:10 large feasts often have an apple pie for dessert .
15:13 In a sentence , my mom cooks an apple pie
15:15 every thanksgiving chocolate chip cookie . Next food is the
15:19 chocolate chip cookie . This is a very popular cookie
15:22 . It's a simple cookie is put chocolate chips into
15:25 any cookie into anything and you can make a chocolate
15:28 chip cookie if you eat it . There's a very
15:30 kind of nostalgic childhood feel about a chocolate chip cookie
15:33 . In a sentence when I was a child ,
15:35 I made chocolate chip cookies with my mom and my
15:37 brother . That's true hamburger . The next food is
15:41 probably the first food you thought of when I said
15:43 we were talking about american foods today , it is
15:46 the hamburger , a beef patty between two buns ,
15:51 two buns , uh , two pieces of bread .
15:54 And depending on your preference , you can put anything
15:56 you like on your hamburger . Many people like to
15:59 use cheese , thereby making it a cheeseburger . You
16:02 can use lettuce , ketchup , tomato , onion ,
16:04 mustard , relish , whatever . Go crazy bacon ,
16:07 avocado , anything really . I love trying new and
16:11 interesting hamburger combination , jelly , beans , jelly beans
16:15 . This is an interesting american food . They're colorful
16:18 . They usually come in a package about this size
16:21 . Maybe this big . They are kind of a
16:24 squishy jelly like candy . Very , very sugary and
16:28 they usually have some kind of fruit flavor . You
16:31 can find the regular jelly beans which are sweet and
16:34 delicious . Or you can find jelly beans which are
16:37 maybe a mysterious mixture in a sentence . When I
16:40 was a kid , I loved eating jellybeans . This
16:43 is an actual picture from one of the , from
16:46 a supermarket . Almost all of those are jelly beans
16:48 or their candies to some degree . So you can
16:50 see there are bins to scoop the candy out of
16:53 . There's a been to like poor candy from this
16:57 is amazing . American candy is just unreal . There's
17:01 so much turkey . Okay , the next food is
17:05 turkey . Turkey . It's a weird big bird that
17:08 we almost always eat Thanksgiving . That's right . Turkey
17:12 is your weird in a sentence . Every year my
17:15 family cooks a turkey for thanksgiving dinner , boston baked
17:19 beans . The next food is boston baked beans .
17:23 This is something I haven't had in a long time
17:25 as you might have guessed . It's an east coast
17:27 style food from boston . So boston style baked beans
17:31 are typically sweetened with molasses or with maple syrup .
17:35 In a sentence , I'm going to make a chilly
17:36 later today with boston baked beans , grits . This
17:40 is a food that comes from the southern part of
17:43 America . I didn't eat grits growing up . So
17:45 I don't really know very well from a video that
17:48 we did a while back , we learned that grits
17:51 are commonly eaten at breakfast . You can eat them
17:54 with butter . I eat grits every day for breakfast
17:57 , hush puppies . Uh here we are again .
18:00 The next american food is hush puppies , hush puppies
18:03 . From the same video that we talked about grits
18:06 . Our friend keith came in and told us about
18:08 hush puppies . It's just a ball of dough that
18:10 is fried . That's it . Very , very simple
18:13 food . Very , very healthy . Surely . No
18:17 . Uh in a sentence , I haven't had hush
18:19 puppies yet and I really want to try them but
18:21 they don't seem very healthy . So it's not high
18:23 on my to do list biscuits and gravy . Okay
18:27 , great . The next food is biscuits and gravy
18:30 . It's a very simple dish . As you can
18:32 guess . It's just a biscuit and gravy . The
18:35 gravy is usually very , very rich , very ,
18:37 very fatty , very fattening . This is a dish
18:40 that is typically eaten for breakfast . A simple coffee
18:43 shop or just a local , a local simple restaurant
18:46 might have biscuits and gravy on the menu in a
18:49 sentence . I used to eat biscuits and gravy at
18:52 my grandparents house in the winter . Philly cheese sticks
18:56 . Oh my God , I'm getting so hungry for
18:58 a very not healthy food . Okay , the next
19:01 food is Philly cheesesteaks . Uh Philly cheesesteaks are so
19:05 good filly is short for philadelphia . The city of
19:09 philadelphia Philly cheesesteak is a sandwich from philadelphia . The
19:13 sandwich has cheese and steak . Oh my God ,
19:16 can you hear my stomach delicious , delicious . It's
19:18 a very east coast east Coast american sandwich in a
19:21 sentence . If you go to philadelphia , make sure
19:24 you try a Philly cheesesteak sandwich . All right ,
19:27 So those are 10 american foods . Have you tried
19:30 any of these foods ? What did you think of
19:31 them ? This video has made me very hungry .
19:34 All right . Thank you very much for watching this
19:37 episode of Top Words . Please make sure to subscribe
19:39 to our channel if you have not already . And
19:42 we will see you again soon for some more good
19:44 information by uh Hi there and welcome back to weekly
19:51 words . My name is Alicia and today we're going
19:53 to talk about american pizza . This is a good
19:55 topic . Let's get started . Alright , the first
19:58 type of pizza is new york style pizza , wow
20:01 . In my image . Anyway , even after reading
20:03 this is the new york . Pizza is just really
20:05 , really big . They're huge slices and people like
20:08 to fold them in new york . There's lots of
20:10 marinara sauce there talked with a whole lot of cheese
20:13 and the crust is usually not super thick . So
20:15 in a sentence you might say to your friends ,
20:17 let's get some new york style pizza for dinner tonight
20:20 . I'm already hungry , California style pizza . I
20:23 wasn't aware there's a California style pizza , thai inspired
20:26 , really California style pizza . This is new to
20:29 me actually . Apparently California style pizza is any pizza
20:32 that doesn't use traditional pizza ingredients . Traditional pizza ingredients
20:35 would be marinara sauce , pepperoni cheese , maybe black
20:39 olives . The stuff that you find in pizza shops
20:41 maybe all over the world I imagine . But California
20:44 pizza maybe uses , don't know , chicken variety of
20:47 different vegetables , maybe fruits , different cuisines like thai
20:50 inspired pizzas . And so have you checked out that
20:53 new California style pizza restaurant ? Sounds good . It
20:56 does sound good . The next one , I know
20:58 Chicago style deep dish pizza , deep dish as the
21:01 name might suggest , the Chicago style pizza is much
21:03 thicker than regular pizza . It could be a lot
21:05 of sauce , it could be a lot of cheese
21:07 , a lot of whatever topping it is that you
21:08 choose , but it's just a really thick thick pizza
21:11 . So in a sentence , Chicago style deep dish
21:13 pizza is excellent with beer . Hawaiian pizza . Hawaiian
21:17 pizza is this just refers to the type of popping
21:20 Hawaiian pizza is Canadian bacon or just ham and pineapple
21:25 . This is my brother's favorite style pizza growing up
21:27 and I've always hated it . So in a sentence
21:29 , my brother's favorite pizza was Hawaiian pizza . Maybe
21:33 it still is Quad city style pizza . What is
21:36 that ? A thin crusted ? Do this ? That
21:38 sounds good . Quad city style pizza has a thin
21:41 crusty dough . Then in the sauce there are red
21:45 chili flakes and ground cayenne , so it's probably a
21:48 little spicier than your average pizza . And then the
21:51 pizza is cut into strips , not squares , not
21:53 triangles , but long strips in a sentence . I
21:56 really want to try quad city style pizza and that's
21:59 the end . I am very hungry now and maybe
22:01 you are too . So go out and see if
22:03 you can find one of these pizza types and give
22:05 them a try . Thank you very much for joining
22:06 us for weekly words this week and I will see
22:08 you again next time . Bye . Hi there ,
22:10 Welcome back to weekly words . My name is Alicia
22:12 and today we're gonna talk about cooking terms . Hooray
22:16 , let's begin . The first word is broil ,
22:18 broil is a setting on your oven . It means
22:21 to cook something under very , very high heat .
22:23 It usually means that only the top heating element in
22:27 your oven is turned on to very high heat and
22:29 I'll get the top of whatever you're cooking . Very
22:31 crispy . In a sentence , broil the chicken at
22:34 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes . You might see
22:37 that in the recipe somewhere . Okay , the next
22:39 word is boil to boil , something needs to cook
22:42 it in very , very hot water , the water
22:44 gets so hot or whatever it is you're cooking with
22:46 broth , whatever is so hot that it's bubbling .
22:48 That's called boiling something . So in a recipe you
22:51 might see bring the soup to a boil and cook
22:54 for 30 minutes . The next word is mince .
22:58 Mince means to cut something into very , very small
23:01 pieces . So you might need to mince garlic ,
23:03 for example , mince carrots , herbs of some kind
23:06 in a sentence include two tablespoons of minced garlic in
23:10 your recipe . All right , The next word is
23:13 sought when you saw something , you often use a
23:16 frying pan and maybe a butter or oil or some
23:19 kind of fat . So it might be a piece
23:22 of fish , it might be chicken , whatever you
23:23 can saute just about anything you like in a sentence
23:26 . I like sauteing meat because it's easy and delicious
23:30 . The next word is simmer . This is often
23:33 used when you're making soup . It's quite hot ,
23:35 but it's not quite at boiling point . So often
23:38 you'll need to let soups simmer for a while to
23:41 get all the flavors out of everything in a sentence
23:43 . Simmer your soup for one hour or more to
23:46 get the best flavor . That's the end . So
23:48 those are some cooking terms . Try and think about
23:50 them . Keep them in mind the next time you
23:52 make something . Thanks very much for joining us this
23:54 week and we'll see you again next time for more
23:55 useful information By my phone is ringing , how is
23:59 my phone ringing ? Hi everybody . Welcome back to
24:01 top words . My name is Alicia and today we're
24:03 going to talk about 10 common food adjectives . So
24:07 let's go salty . The first adjective is salty ,
24:12 salty . So we use salty to describe a food
24:15 which has a strong salt ish , salt like taste
24:19 . Uh so salt them , that white stuff .
24:21 You might have table salt or kosher salt or sea
24:24 salt . Um all different kinds of salt . If
24:27 the taste of salt is very strong in your meal
24:30 , you can say it's salty , that chicken is
24:33 very salty or I don't like salty foods or things
24:36 which are very salty , dehydrate me or be careful
24:40 or it will get too salty . For example ,
24:42 salty refers to the taste of salt . Sweet .
24:47 Alright , the next adjective is sweet . Sweet is
24:50 a word we use to describe something that has a
24:53 sugar like or a sugary taste . This can mean
24:56 actual sugar , like white sugar , brown sugar .
24:59 We can also use sweet to talk about foods which
25:02 are naturally sweet , like fruit , for example ,
25:05 so apples or oranges or pears , peaches . These
25:10 are foods which are naturally sweet . We can say
25:12 both processed sweetness is sweet and we can say natural
25:16 sweetness is sweet . We use the word sweet to
25:19 describe all of these , we can use it to
25:21 describe desserts as well , sauces to anything is fine
25:25 , anything that tastes a little sugary . Um we
25:28 can use the word sweet to describe that . So
25:32 for example , I don't like sweet foods or I
25:34 really like eating sweet food at the end of the
25:37 day or what's your favorite sweet thing to eat ?
25:40 Or this apple is really sweet , it's great savory
25:44 . The next word is savory . Savory is a
25:47 word we use to describe something that has a strong
25:51 flavor , but it is not sweet . So it's
25:54 not necessarily , it's maybe it's not salty . The
25:58 flavor isn't overwhelming , there's not too much flavor ,
26:02 but there's a very clear and strong flavor that is
26:05 not sweet . There's not a sugary flavor . So
26:09 it's especially used for meats because we use seasonings a
26:14 lot for like the outsides of meats . So we
26:16 could say all this roast chicken is really savory or
26:19 we could use um like for sauces to which often
26:22 have many different spices and herbs and things . We
26:25 could say that sauce is really savory . So something
26:28 which has a strong flavor but it's not maybe so
26:32 it's not so sweet . We can use the word
26:34 savory to describe that savory . So ah yeah ,
26:37 that steak was so savory , it was delicious .
26:40 Slimy . The next word is slimy , slimy .
26:44 I don't like slimy foods that is true . Slimy
26:47 refers to foods that are there not quite liquid .
26:50 They're not like water but they're not solid either .
26:52 They're in this in between area . So if you
26:55 cut them for example and you pull them apart ,
26:58 you might see like these show stringy pieces are like
27:01 almost like liquid . These weird like almost like fibers
27:06 , but they're kind of fall down . It's the
27:09 noun form of that is slime . We say it's
27:11 this kind of gross , a little sticky feeling substance
27:15 . So foods that have that texture are slimy food
27:19 . So for example , raw egg is slimy or
27:21 okra is slimy or some fermented foods are slimy .
27:26 These are foods that have a slimy texture . So
27:30 um , some people like myself , it's really hard
27:32 for us to eat slimy food . So we can
27:35 say , I don't like slimy foods or I need
27:37 to eat something else with slimy foods or you ,
27:40 that's so slimy , I don't want to eat that
27:42 decadent . The next word is decadent . Decadent is
27:46 a word we use often to describe deserts . So
27:49 decadent means like self indulgent . Like it's more than
27:53 we need . It's maybe unreasonable , how luxurious this
27:57 thing is . We use it a lot for very
27:59 high calorie foods and often for very sugary and sweet
28:03 foods . So I could say my favorite dessert is
28:05 a decadent chocolate cake or oh my gosh , that
28:08 meal was decadent . It was so beautiful . Or
28:11 I can't believe how decadent that wedding cake was ,
28:14 It was amazing . So something that's just over the
28:17 top . It's too much , It's a little crazy
28:19 self indulgence . Just selfish . We can say its
28:23 decadent . That's a decadent food bland . The next
28:27 word is bland . We use bland to talk about
28:31 a food that has very little flavor or no flavor
28:34 . Some foods are naturally bland . They naturally don't
28:38 really have flavor other foods . However we use bland
28:43 to create a negative connotation to create negative meaning .
28:47 If a food that should have a lot of flavor
28:50 does not have a lot of flavor , we can
28:52 say that's bland , that's really bland . So if
28:55 I go to eat like , I don't know thai
28:57 food for example and it should have maybe a strong
29:01 spicy taste , but there's nothing I don't taste anything
29:05 I can say . Well this was really bland .
29:07 Why is it so bland ? That's strange if however
29:10 you're eating a food that you expect to be bland
29:13 and therefore there it is bland . You don't really
29:16 need to make a comment . Like I could say
29:19 tofu is bland but it's healthy . So we don't
29:22 expect to have any flavor and that's pretty normal .
29:25 We can say its bland , it's pretty bland and
29:28 it's sort of a neutral comment . Um but you
29:30 can say this is bland to make a negative comment
29:34 about a food that you expect to have a lot
29:36 of flavor . So bland . Also be careful with
29:38 your pronunciation , bland . Make the L sound very
29:41 clearly not brand bland . Okay , so bland foods
29:46 little or no flavor sour . The next word is
29:50 sour sour . We use sour anything that makes us
29:54 feel like maybe your face kind of squeeze is like
29:58 a little bit when you eat this thing . It's
29:59 hard for many people to eat sour foods . There's
30:02 like an acid taste in your mouth almost . Um
30:05 So some people really like sour candy as well ,
30:09 like this very acid plus sweet sort of taste .
30:12 Many people really like that . But sour foods for
30:15 example , are like citrus fruits , like lemon is
30:17 very sour or grapefruit is rather sour . This very
30:21 like strong acid taste . Um we can say is
30:24 sour , that's a sour food . Um So depending
30:28 on your preferences , maybe you can eat really sour
30:31 things or you can't eat sour things at all .
30:34 I like sour things . They're they're okay every once
30:37 in a while , but super sour . Not so
30:38 good , like bushy . Yeah . Yeah , I
30:40 think it's dried plums like in japan are very sour
30:43 bullshit . Can't do it , can't do it's just
30:46 crazy . So sour , sour in a sentence .
30:49 Um I have a hard time eating really sour things
30:53 , bitter . Okay , the next word is bitter
30:56 , bitter . So bitter refers to something that has
31:00 like sour , maybe it makes our mouth kind of
31:03 like squeeze up a little bit . It creates the
31:06 same feeling in our mouth as sour , but bitter
31:10 doesn't have that acid feeling . Bitter doesn't feel like
31:14 that . Like bright like citrus eve sensation in their
31:19 mouth , bitter is sort of like we feel it
31:23 more like the back of our mouth . I feel
31:25 like so foods for example , like spinach or like
31:28 maybe bitter beer , like beer with lots and lots
31:30 of hops is quite bitter or like burned sugar is
31:33 extremely bitter . So these have like kind of a
31:36 deep , a deeper flavor to them , sour has
31:39 like a very bright acidic flavor . Bitter is kind
31:42 of like a deep and sort of dark like kind
31:45 of almost unpleasant feeling if it's extremely bitter bitter foods
31:50 . Yeah , like Arugula I think is another one
31:53 . Kale I think is also quite bitter . Um
31:55 So these are things that are , that are not
31:58 unpleasant but that have a strong kind of Vinci detective
32:01 taste I suppose you can say mm so bitter ,
32:05 bitter . So in an example sentence , uh many
32:08 people enjoy drinking very bitter beers these days . Rah
32:13 . The next word is raw . Raw means uncooked
32:16 , not cooked at all . Something that is raw
32:18 has not been exposed to any cooking technique at all
32:23 . So just as is so like we can say
32:26 raw meat or raw chicken or raw vegetables . So
32:29 no cooking , no preparation , nothing has happened to
32:32 that to that food that's just raw as it is
32:35 . Um , so some people like to have food
32:38 as raw as possible . Sometimes raw food is dangerous
32:41 . For example , eating raw chicken is very dangerous
32:44 because of salmonella . So raw raw means uncooked ,
32:48 totally not raw chicken is really dangerous , burnt .
32:53 Last word is burnt , burnt , burnt means cooked
32:57 too much , cooked too much . So you put
33:00 a piece of bread in the toaster , it becomes
33:02 toast , but it's black . You say it's burnt
33:05 burnt is the adjective form , my toast is burnt
33:08 you I don't want to eat burnt cookies . Gross
33:10 . They're like burnt popcorn smells terrible . That's a
33:13 popular one . Burnt popcorn I think . But burnt
33:16 is the adjective form burnt . It's burnt . Yeah
33:19 , gross . So this one my steak is burnt
33:23 . So those are 10 common food adjectives . Are
33:26 there any other words that you used to talk about
33:29 food or should describe the food that you like ?
