00:05 11 dot com Whenever I'm ready . All right ,
00:10 hi everybody , welcome back to top words . My
00:13 name is Alicia and today we're gonna be talking about
00:16 10 words for connecting thoughts . These are going to
00:19 be 10 words that you can use to transition between
00:22 ideas very useful in both speech and in writing .
00:25 Let's go . Also . Also also is a word
00:30 that you can use to add information . I went
00:34 to the store this morning also I went and got
00:39 coffee . That's true . However , however , however
00:44 , is used to contrast or to contrast depending on
00:47 your pronunciation to differentiate , to show a difference between
00:52 two pieces of information . A good pattern would be
00:55 a however , be so for example , I love
01:01 tonkotsu ramen . However , it is very high in
01:04 calories so I don't eat it often . Also true
01:07 on the other hand , on the other hand ,
01:09 on the other hand is I feel used more commonly
01:12 in speech than it is in writing . Um Again
01:16 , it's used to present like two sides to a
01:19 story or two sides to some information . So for
01:22 example , I'm thinking about visiting Taiwan sometime this year
01:28 , but on the other hand , I'm also thinking
01:30 about visiting Thailand still . So it might be common
01:36 to use still with the word like but forward ,
01:39 like even though , so you're saying even though there's
01:41 some other factor like um like I'm really , really
01:44 tired this week or even though I have a lot
01:46 of homework to do , I still want to go
01:49 out with my friends and I still want to um
01:51 see a movie this weekend . So there's this other
01:54 , there's this thing that maybe makes this other action
01:57 difficult to do or tough to do or whatever .
02:00 But even though there's this , you still have this
02:05 over here . So maybe the tube are kind of
02:07 used as a pair . I still want to go
02:09 out later even though I'm tired then then yes ,
02:13 a very useful word we use then when telling stories
02:17 a lot . Um , so for example , if
02:20 I could tell a story about my morning today ,
02:22 when I got up , I brushed my teeth and
02:26 then I cooked breakfast , then I did a little
02:30 bit of work , then I took a shower ,
02:33 then I did some cooking blah , blah , blah
02:36 . You'll often hear and then as well and then
02:39 I , and then we , and then you and
02:42 so on . So then it is really , really
02:44 useful for sequence . So a useful word I think
02:48 besides besides , so it's commonly used in a pattern
02:51 like besides that meaning other than something else . I
02:55 went out with my friends this weekend . But besides
02:57 that I didn't really do much . So , another
03:00 way to say that sentence is I went out with
03:03 my friends this weekend , but other than that ,
03:06 other than that activity , I didn't do very much
03:09 . Okay . Meanwhile , meanwhile , or you might
03:12 hear the similar expression in the meantime . It means
03:16 while you're doing action A . At the same time
03:21 , maybe somewhere else Action B is happening . This
03:25 is used while telling stories a lot . So ,
03:28 for example , I was working at my office all
03:31 week last week . Meanwhile , my co workers across
03:34 town , we're having a party without me . What
03:38 ? So these two things are happening at the same
03:41 time , but maybe separate from one another . Meanwhile
03:46 , Likewise , okay . Likewise , I don't really
03:50 use this word personally myself at all . It's often
03:53 used after an introduction . Um similar to the pleasure
03:57 is all mine in a formal situation . So maybe
04:01 somebody says , you know , hey , it was
04:03 really great to see you last weekend . Thanks very
04:06 much for coming to my barbecue . You can say
04:08 , yeah , likewise , it was really good to
04:11 see you in your family . So likewise means I
04:14 have the same feeling or I have the same idea
04:17 . It's kind of a friendly phrase , but personally
04:20 I don't really use that to transition between thoughts I
04:24 would just use and I suppose . But no ,
04:28 that's how I would use it instead instead . So
04:33 , so instead it's used like instead of I want
04:36 to a instead of be can be used to express
04:40 your plans or what you want to do . I
04:42 want to have chinese food instead of italian food tonight
04:45 . So you're , you're presenting to alternatives essentially .
04:48 So instead of means in place of or as a
04:51 substitute for , so I should have drank a lot
04:57 of water this morning , but instead I drank a
05:00 lot of coffee . That's true . I wanted to
05:06 um have dinner with my friends this weekend instead I
05:10 had dinner at home . In addition . In addition
05:16 , this is a really good word for more formal
05:19 situations I like to use in addition in writing ,
05:22 I don't really use in addition and speaking unless I'm
05:26 trying to be very formal for some reason uh similar
05:30 to additionally as well , so you make a point
05:32 A . And point B . And then when you
05:34 want to make one more point that's related to point
05:37 A . And point B . You can say in
05:39 addition point C . So you're like building an argument
05:42 and in addition can be used to kind of finish
05:45 that argument off a little bit . Our new marketing
05:48 plan worked really well . Last month we noticed increased
05:51 sales in product A . In addition we've gained a
05:56 lot of new customers , something like that . So
05:58 just your your quickly presenting a series of ideas that
06:01 are related to one another you can use in addition
06:04 to finish it off . All right . So that's
06:07 the end of 10 words for connecting thoughts . I
06:09 hope you get to use a lot of these .
06:11 Try to mix it up . It's good to use
06:13 a variety of different words . Thanks very much for
06:16 watching this episode and we will see you again next
06:18 time for more fun stuff by mm Whenever I'm ready
06:24 . All right , welcome back to weekly words .
06:27 I'm Alicia . And this week we're going to talk
06:31 about commonly mispronounced , missed pronounced wow . This week
06:37 we're going to talk about commonly mispronounced words , words
06:40 that are often pronounced incorrectly . This is funny I
06:44 enjoying this pronouncing this first word . The first word
06:47 is hyperbole , hyperbole . Um , it's not hyper
06:51 bowl though . It does sound very funny to say
06:53 that hyperbole just means to exaggerate something . Um or
06:58 to make to blow something up . Make it really
07:00 extreme . My friend uses a lot of hyperbole when
07:03 she talks about her life stories . I really don't
07:06 think some of those things happen to her . Hyperbole
07:09 . Not hype . Herbal . Next antarctic . Not
07:14 uh Oh , I see , antarctic is the correct
07:17 pronunciation of this word some people say . And and
07:21 tart antarctic . Really ? Oh , I guess when
07:25 you're saying this word quickly , you might leave out
07:27 that first . See in the antarctic . So don't
07:31 say that . Don't do that say antarctic . The
07:34 very , very cold region . The arctic is the
07:36 north cold region on the planet Earth . The south
07:39 is the antarctic . They're sort of like almost a
07:41 hiccup in the word . Their antarctic . Oh ,
07:45 in a sentence , I'm thinking about taking a cruise
07:48 to the antarctic . What do you think I need
07:51 penguin suit etcetera ? Not etcetera . Oh , yeah
07:55 , okay . I hear I hear this Ek Ek
07:58 thing a lot , et cetera is just used at
08:00 the end of the list to imply that you mean
08:03 other things . Uh so the list is not exclusive
08:07 to the things that you've listed . Other things can
08:09 also be included in it . So , in a
08:11 sample sentence , um types of fruits are apples ,
08:15 oranges , peaches , et cetera . There are others
08:18 as well . So don't say etcetera . That's not
08:21 correct , et cetera is good . The next word
08:24 is jewelry . What ? Not money ? The next
08:30 word is jewelry , jewelry . I think I'm probably
08:32 guilty of this mispronunciation . I can't say that word
08:36 mispronunciation , where the word kind of gets a little
08:39 bit smushed together and we say jewelry . Instead we
08:43 missed that second e sound in there . It should
08:46 be jewelry . Uh in a sample sentence . Maybe
08:50 you would say I'm shopping for some jewelry for my
08:52 mother for her birthday , jewelry were too lazy ,
08:56 prescription , not prescription . Okay . A prescription is
09:01 something that the doctor gives you when you're sick and
09:04 you require medicine . The doctor will write you a
09:06 prescription . Some people might say prescription , wow .
09:11 Okay . I didn't even notice and I was doing
09:14 it while I was telling you guys not to do
09:15 it . That's embarrassing prescription . A doctor writes you
09:19 a prescription , not a prescription . When you go
09:23 to the doctor's office , the doctor might say ,
09:25 here is your prescription and all right , well we've
09:29 learned that I apparently can't pronounce some words the way
09:32 they're meant to be pronounced . So please work on
09:34 your pronunciation . I will work on my pronunciation to
09:37 thank you for joining us on weekly words this week
09:39 . I will see you next time . Bye bye
09:42 . Welcome back to weekly words . My name is
09:44 Alicia and this week we're going to talk about commonly
09:47 quoted movie lines . Ooh , I hope I know
09:51 these . I'll be back . A lot of people
09:54 like to try and do an Arnold Schwarzenegger impression ,
09:56 this comes from the movie terminator where Arnold Schwarzenegger plays
09:59 a robot from the future and it's really awesome .
10:02 You can use this with your friends , you can
10:04 use this in common everyday situations where you have to
10:07 leave someplace , but you want to tell people in
10:09 a kind of a funny way that you plan on
10:11 coming back . You can say all the book inconceivable
10:14 , say this with a list inconceivable . If you've
10:17 seen the movie The Princess Bride inconceivable , so to
10:20 conceive of something , something you can think about putting
10:24 that in at the beginning of the word means can't
10:27 are not able to conceive of something , you can't
10:30 even think about it , you can't believe it .
10:32 In other words , this is one word that means
10:33 I can't believe it or this is just ridiculous .
10:36 So you can use this any time , you're just
10:38 shocked by something , you just can't believe that something
10:40 is happening , you can say inconceivable . This is
10:42 a very good one . A recent one from the
10:44 movie anchorman will Ferrell says this uh he says ,
10:47 I immediately regret this decision , I immediately regret this
10:50 decision . It's a very long phrase , but it
10:53 means you've just made a choice and you very quickly
10:57 immediately realize this was a bad decision . I should
11:00 not have done this . You can say , I
11:01 immediately regret this decision , but with kind of like
11:04 a flat tone to it , it's a little bit
11:06 funny . Okay next is a very famous quote from
11:09 the movie , Forrest gump Tom Hanks was in this
11:11 movie , his character famously says mama always said life
11:14 was like a box of chocolates . The next line
11:16 is you never know what you're gonna get . So
11:18 this refers to picking a piece of chocolate out of
11:21 a box of chocolates , Maybe you've seen kind of
11:23 the fancy ones that have a number of different styles
11:26 of chocolate in them when you bite into it .
11:27 Oftentimes you don't know what's on the inside , So
11:30 the character is saying that life is like that too
11:32 , you might try to do a few different things
11:35 , but you never know what's going to happen until
11:37 you actually try to do it . So this is
11:40 an interesting phrase to use , maybe if your friend
11:42 is having trouble in their life in some way ,
11:44 you can maybe try to console them or cheer them
11:46 up by saying mama always said life is like a
11:48 box of chocolates . The next quote comes from the
11:51 movie Apollo 13 , a very famous space movie .
11:54 The quote is Houston , we have a problem .
11:56 Houston refers to the control center , Nasa's control center
11:59 and the astronaut is famously quoted as saying we have
12:02 a problem , any time you run across a problem
12:05 at work or with your friends , with your family
12:08 , whatever you can say , Houston we have a
12:10 problem , meaning you're just trying to alert the other
12:12 people around you that something is wrong , you need
12:14 help with something perhaps . So it's usually not a
12:18 very serious problem though , I should say that .
12:20 So don't use it for like a medical emergency ,
12:22 use it for something , you know like oh I'm
12:24 out of eggs , Houston , we have a problem
12:25 . You know if you're cooking something very very lighthearted
12:28 is good and that's the end of some famous movie
12:31 quote . So try to use a few of these
12:33 if you like , they're kind of fun and if
12:36 you use them with the right timing , that can
12:38 be very , very funny and people will generally appreciate
12:41 that you use such an interesting references in your conversation
12:44 . Thanks very much for joining us this week and
12:47 we'll see you again next time . Bye . Here's
12:49 looking at you kid . What does that even mean
12:52 though ? Classic goodbye line , kind of welcome back
12:58 to weekly words , I'm Alicia and this week we
13:00 are going to do words with strange plural forms .
13:05 This is good practice . I bet . Let's start
13:07 . Yeah , antenna . The plural form of antenna
13:11 is antenna , I think I would say . And
13:13 today and I think I probably actually just say antennas
13:18 and antenna on an old tv set for example would
13:22 be kind of look like this . We call it
13:24 bunny ears where you had to adjust the bunny ears
13:26 , you have to and just adjust the antenna to
13:29 make the signal on your tv . Coming more clearly
13:31 bugs . They have antenna from their heads . The
13:35 next word is millennium . The plural is millennia .
13:38 A millennium is a period of 1000 years , 1000
13:42 years is a millennium . A series of thousands of
13:45 years would be called millennia , you might say Many
13:49 millennia have passed since the earth was formed . Cactus
13:57 is the next word . A cactus is a plant
13:59 . Uh These are the arms of the cactus .
14:04 I couldn't make the trunk of the cactus , wow
14:07 , You can put a picture on the screen instead
14:09 of my amazing cactus . The plural of cactuses ,
14:13 cacti or cactus is I think I'm more inclined to
14:16 sekac die . So when you go to the desert
14:19 , you might say keep an eye out for cac
14:21 die . If you step on one , it could
14:23 really hurt you . The next one is an interesting
14:25 one . I don't think I've ever used this word
14:27 in the singular . Like if you have a swimming
14:29 pool or if you've seen a pond or whatever ,
14:31 it's that green sort of scummy stuff that accumulates on
14:34 top of it or on the sides of your pool
14:36 . If you haven't cleaned it in a while ,
14:37 algae , bacterias and things that like to live in
14:40 the water . There's a singular form and I'm just
14:43 , I'm looking at it for the first time .
14:44 I don't know how alga to use the plural that
14:46 you would say I need to clean my pool .
14:48 There's a lot of algae in it . Yeah ,
14:51 Next is ox ox , the plural of oxes ,
14:55 oxen . These animals used to be used for farming
15:00 . I don't know that they are very much anymore
15:02 . I don't have much personal experience with farming ,
15:04 but they're , they look like really , really big
15:06 cows with huge horns , huge horns . Yeah .
15:10 Okay . Next is the end uh , plural words
15:15 that have weird plural forms , so please keep them
15:18 in mind when you are trying to use them in
15:21 conversation and use the correct form of the plural .
15:23 Thank you for joining us again this week . For
15:25 weekly words . Next time we will see you for
15:28 more weekly words . That was weird . We'll see
15:30 you again next week . For more fun information .
15:33 Take care . Bye . Mm . Oh no .
15:37 All right . Welcome back to weekly words . My
15:40 name is Alicia and this week we are going to
15:42 talk about commonly used on um , on Apia ,
15:45 this is gonna be a fun one . We talked
15:46 briefly about an animal in Apia zoom in a previous
15:50 episode of weekly Words , we're going to talk some
15:52 more about some more . Talk some more about some
15:54 more . We're going to talk about more today .
15:56 The first word is beep beep beep is any kind
16:01 of electronic sound or a car sound ? And was
16:03 also in a popular american cartoon , Wiley coyote and
16:07 the Roadrunner . The Roadrunner would commonly say meat ,
16:09 meat car sound will usually make a beep or honk
16:12 sound for electronics . However , the beep becomes a
16:15 little bit more robotic will often see like beep beep
16:18 beep beep . So in a sentence , let's say
16:21 you have a computer problem , you tell your friend
16:23 the computer won't stop beeping at me . What do
16:25 I do next Is the sound jingle jingle , is
16:29 any kind of light ringing sound ? This word gets
16:31 used a lot in holiday seasons , particularly christmas ,
16:35 thanksgiving New Year's . Any jingling sound is very commonly
16:39 assigned to Bell's like the song jingle bells for example
16:43 , is a perfect example of this jingle is just
16:45 the sound that a bell makes in a sentence .
16:48 Let's see . You might say she has a small
16:51 bell attached to her phone so she jingles everywhere she
16:54 walks . It's really irritating . Okay , the next
16:58 word is thump . A thump is for something to
17:00 hit heavily . To give an example . The people
17:03 who live in the apartment above me often thump on
17:06 the floor . It sounds like maybe they're dropping something
17:08 heavy or um they're stepping very heavily . All right
17:13 , Next is splash . Anything that falls into liquid
17:17 lens in liquid . Makes a splash . Is that
17:20 sort of sound that comes from water or any other
17:23 liquid ? Really , we refer to that as a
17:25 splash sound . There is also a popular Tom Hanks
17:27 mermaid movie called splash . This has nothing to do
17:31 with that about him falling in love with a mermaid
17:33 . I made a big splash when I jumped into
17:35 the swimming pool this summer . That has kind of
17:38 a double meaning mysterious . Next is blurt . It
17:42 means to say something quickly . I blurted out the
17:45 news as soon as I heard it , like I
17:47 blurted out the secret , I couldn't hold it any
17:49 longer . It means you just say something without thinking
17:52 to blurt the first part of the word , what
17:54 that blur sound . It sounds like something is just
17:57 kind of sort of slips out on accident and then
18:01 the harsh blurt . The T at the end is
18:04 like a kind of a final like , oh my
18:07 gosh , I've just said something . I slipped and
18:09 then I've said something . Oh no , I didn't
18:10 think about that . All right , that's the end
18:13 of that one . So I hope you learned a
18:14 few new on amount of pius that you can try
18:16 out the next time . Thanks for joining us for
18:19 weekly words and I will see you again next time
18:21 . Bye bye . Want to speak real english from
18:23 your first lesson . Sign up for your free lifetime
18:26 account at english . Class 101 dot com . Hi
18:31 Hey and welcome back to weekly words . My name
18:35 is Alicia and this week we're going to talk about
18:38 interjection , This is gonna be fun . Let's start
18:41 . The first word is by vh maybe you're upset
18:44 about something or you're tired of dealing with something .
18:47 People will often throw up their hands like this when
18:49 they say that the body and walk away bah humbug
18:52 is a very , very well known use of this
18:55 Interjection this from the story of christmas carol , one
18:58 of the characters says bah humbug at all these things
19:01 that upset him . Alright , the next introduction is
19:04 ah ha ha ha is used whenever you feel surprised
19:08 about something or when you have a good idea about
19:11 something . For example sitting at work actually , maybe
19:14 you shouldn't do this at work because your co workers
19:15 will think you're crazy . If you're feeling really excited
19:18 about your idea you can go like this with your
19:20 finger and go ha ha ha I have an idea
19:22 for my presentation next week . Okay , the next
19:25 one is this one I think has only become popular
19:29 in the last , I don't know , started being
19:31 used I think it started more on the internet and
19:33 now it has come to be used in everyday life
19:35 and then it's just when you're not very excited about
19:37 something , maybe you went to a party , your
19:39 friend asks you how it was and you're like ,
19:42 yeah , I went it was pretty mad . We
19:44 use it like an adjective actually , or you can
19:46 just use it as one word interjection . Okay .
19:51 Next word is oh , oh , oh , it's
19:54 a very , very useful one you can use oh
19:56 , in a number of situations when you're surprised ,
19:59 when you're thinking of something , when you want to
20:00 have kind of a soft introduction to whatever you're saying
20:03 , I think I tend to use it as a
20:05 question or when I'm feeling surprised . So when my
20:07 friend tells me something like , oh hey , I
20:09 have this great news . I'll say , oh ,
20:11 just by itself as a question to get somebody's attention
20:14 . I might say , oh , did you see
20:15 that new movie last week ? A sentence started for
20:17 me Anyway , Okay , the next door . It
20:19 is mm We use when we're thinking about something .
20:22 When we need a minute to consider our thoughts .
20:25 It can be used at the beginning of a sentence
20:27 or just while you're thinking on its own . Mm
20:30 What might be a good example sentence for mm And
20:35 and those are all interjections . Those are all interjections
20:39 . Try to use them . If you use these
20:41 correctly in your speech throughout your speech , it will
20:43 help you to sound a lot more natural and a
20:45 lot more smooth in your speaking ability . So give
20:48 them a try . Thanks again for joining us this
20:50 week and I will see you next time . For
20:51 more weekly words begin . Hi everybody welcome back to
20:55 weekly words . My name is Alicia and this week
20:57 we're going to look at some common english idioms .
21:00 Let's begin . The first word or phrase rather is
21:03 about to about to means you're going to start something
21:06 . You're going to begin doing something . For example
21:08 , I'm about to start explaining this idiom to you
21:11 . Hey , okay , the next word or phrase
21:14 idiom , The next idiom is by the way ,
21:17 the word here they've used as incidentally , it's a
21:20 way to transition to another topic that's related to what
21:23 you're talking about . For example , this week I'm
21:26 going to a party by the way , did you
21:27 hear about the party happening next week ? So there's
21:30 somewhat related , Okay , the next idiom is in
21:34 a way , in a way this is kind of
21:36 in a way it was a good thing that the
21:38 burrito shop was closed because otherwise I would have eaten
21:41 way too much and you can use this to show
21:43 that there may be two sides to a situation .
21:45 Maybe some things are negative , Maybe some things are
21:47 positive . Next is on the other hand , I
21:49 hear this a lot . On the other hand ,
21:51 is a way of just saying however or to share
21:54 two different sides to a story . For example ,
21:57 I think my coworker is really irritating . On the
21:59 other hand , at parties . He's really funny .
22:01 So you can show to maybe different sides to a
22:04 point with this phrase . Next is a matter of
22:07 fact , as a matter of fact , as an
22:09 idiom . Uh this is a long way to just
22:11 say actually or really it's a little bit more formal
22:14 sounding , so you might use it in a business
22:16 meeting . For example , everybody at the business meeting
22:19 might feel a little bit unsure about the previous month
22:22 sales and you can begin your presentation by saying something
22:25 like , I know everybody was a little bit unsure
22:28 about last weeks or last month sales performance , but
22:30 as a matter of fact , things improved and that's
22:35 the end . Those are some common idioms that you
22:37 might hear in english , give them a try .
22:39 They're pretty useful and you might hear a lot of
22:41 them in conversation . Thanks very much for joining us
22:43 this week and we'll see you again next time for
22:45 more information by Hi , welcome back to weekly words
22:49 . My name is Alicia and this week we're going
22:50 to talk about ways to say , hi , this
22:53 should be fun . Let's get started . First .
22:54 Is you hope this one is a little bit casual
22:58 in case you couldn't tell used for close friends .
23:01 Maybe family members , if you have kind of a
23:02 silly relationship with them , just quick short , easy
23:05 to do in a sentence . Yo , how's it
23:08 going ? Howdy ? Howdy traditionally associated with cowboy culture
23:13 ? I suppose you should play a banjo maybe or
23:15 you've just gotten off a horse . I don't know
23:17 . I use howdy from time to time . Howdy
23:19 , howdy , howdy , howdy , that's my banjo
23:24 . Yeah . In a sentence , you might say
23:27 howdy folks , welcome to the barbecue place . Next
23:34 is , hey , hey , is good friendly phrase
23:37 you can usually use , hey with a wave and
23:39 smile , look happy . If you don't , people
23:41 might think that you're down in the dumps , people
23:43 might think you're not in a very good mood in
23:44 a sentence . Hey , I heard you got engaged
23:48 last week , congratulations , something like that . It's
23:50 usually kind of a cheery happy expression . All right
23:53 , Next is what's up ? What's up is the
23:56 long form of sup . This does not literally mean
23:59 what is above you right now ? If you want
24:01 to be funny , you can say the ceiling or
24:03 the sky , but that joke gets old really fast
24:06 and chances are the person you're talking to has already
24:08 heard it before . It just means what are you
24:10 up to ? What is going on with you in
24:12 a sentence ? What's up ? Did you have a
24:14 good weekend ? Typical response to what's up is not
24:17 much . Find out some more responses in english in
24:19 three minutes . We did an episode on this .
24:21 Nothing much . How about you ? That's pretty good
24:23 . Pretty good . Pretty good . Pretty good .
24:27 I don't know what I'm doing . The next one
24:30 is a long time . No . See you can
24:31 use this when you haven't seen the other person for
24:33 a long time . You're at a party or an
24:35 event or whatever any time it's been a long break
24:38 . You can decide how long long is not the
24:41 day before or the week before , Maybe a few
24:43 weeks or a month . Whatever is unusual for you
24:45 in this other person . When you see them ,
24:47 you can say , hey , long time no ,
24:49 see how have you been , That's the end .
24:51 So those are a few different ways to say hi
24:53 in a few different situations . I hope that you
24:55 have a chance to try them out the next time
24:57 you meet someone or you greet someone . Thanks very
24:59 much for joining us this week and we'll see you
25:01 again soon , bye . Instead of things up .
25:04 I like to say soup , soup , soup ,
25:07 Hi everybody , welcome back to top words . My
25:09 name is Alicia and today we're going to be talking
25:12 about 10 different phrases that you can use to respond
25:15 to the question , how are you ? So let's
25:17 go . I'm great . The first phrase is ,
25:20 I'm great . If someone says , how are you
25:23 ? You can say , I'm great . Try to
25:25 say I'm great with a kind of an upbeat voice
25:28 . Um , so something like how are you ?
25:30 I'm great , I'm feeling bad . I'm feeling bad
25:35 . If you say I'm feeling bad , the other
25:37 person is probably if they're a friend of yours or
25:40 a co worker going to ask you why what happened
25:42 ? So if you want to use , I'm feeling
25:45 bad , make sure you have an explanation ready .
25:47 Anyway , Somebody says , how are you and you
25:49 go , I'm feeling bad . Maybe I went out
25:52 for drinks last night with my coworkers . Oops ,
25:55 I'm okay , I'm okay . I feel like this
25:57 is one of those intonation practice ones . I'm okay
26:00 with that . I'm okay . It's like sort of
26:03 upward intonation . You're like , cool . But if
26:06 someone says , how are you ? You're like ,
26:07 I'm okay . They're like , oh no , what
26:11 happened ? So you can use your intonation with ,
26:14 I'm okay to make it a good thing , or
26:17 not a good thing . But either way , it's
26:19 not like a very like , super serious response .
26:21 Thank you for asking . Yeah , I imagine this
26:25 would be in a more formal situation , like if
26:28 my friends said to me , how are you ?
26:31 And I was like , thank you for asking .
26:33 They'd be like , what ? I would say I'm
26:36 fine , or I'm doing well , I'm doing great
26:39 . Plus , thank you for asking . So how
26:41 are you ? I'm doing very well , thank you
26:45 . Oh , that's how I would use it ,
26:46 and you , the next one is and you ,
26:49 like , the least natural response to how are you
26:52 is I'm fine , thank you . And you ,
26:54 like , just get out of , just take it
26:57 out of your head . Nobody says that . I
26:58 always say , how about you ? That's a much
27:01 more natural thing . How are you ? How are
27:04 you ? How are you can be a response again
27:06 after you have given your answer to the question ,
27:09 How are you ? I'm great . How are you
27:12 ? How are you ? I'm good . How are
27:14 you ? I'm great . How are you ? I'm
27:15 okay . How are you ? How have you been
27:18 recently ? How have you been recently ? This is
27:20 only useful if you haven't seen the other person for
27:23 a while . I'm not bad . I'm not bad
27:26 . I'm not bad . How are you ? I'm
27:28 not bad . I'm not . Bad things . Could
27:31 be worse . I would probably do this . I'm
27:34 a standard back . I'm sleepy . The next expression
27:37 is I'm sleepy . Hey ? It's like so specific
27:41 . If someone said , how are you ? I
27:42 would probably say I'm OK , but I'm a little
27:46 sleepy . I don't know that . I would just
27:48 say I'm sleepy unless it's a really good friend of
27:51 mine . It's a person close to you . You
27:53 can say I'm so tired . I'm I would say
27:55 I'm super tired or I'm really tired and I feel
27:59 like that's a little bit more natural than just I'm
28:01 sleepy . I'm good one that I use a lot
28:04 . If someone says , how are you ? I
28:06 say I'm good . Uh that's just probably my go
28:09 to response . Yeah , I'm good . I'm good
28:11 . Maybe I'll repeat it While smiling . I'm good
28:14 . I'm good . Yeah , thanks for asking .
28:16 Great . Uh sorry , that is the end .
28:18 Those are 10 phrases that you can use to respond
28:21 to the question . How are you if there's one
28:23 takeaway from this and from other things that we've done
28:26 over the last few years in this channel , just
28:28 get rid of that . I'm fine . Thank you
28:30 . And you and pick one of these that we've
28:32 talked about today . Um of course , if there's
28:34 another expression that you use for a response to ,
28:39 how are you ? I'd be very interested to learn
28:42 about that . But uh , in general , you're
28:45 pretty safe with the stick with these . I think
28:46 so . Thanks very much for watching this episode of
28:49 Top Words and we will see you again soon .
28:51 Bye Noise Lapetina . That means we're going to the
28:58 movie theater . Right ? All right . Hi everybody
29:02 . My name is Alicia . Welcome back to Top
29:04 Words today . We're gonna be talking about Must know
29:07 expressions for agreeing and disagreeing . Very useful . So
29:10 let's go exactly . Exactly . When you agree .
29:14 100 with something someone else has said . You can
29:17 say exactly . For example , roman is one of
29:20 the best foods in the world . Exactly . I
29:23 don't agree . I don't agree . You have a
29:25 different opinion from the other person . They tell you
29:28 , I think that soccer is the best sport you
29:30 can say . I don't agree . But be prepared
29:33 to provide your own opinion after this . I think
29:36 soccer is the best sport . I don't agree .
29:38 I think that football is . Oh , that could
29:41 cause some problems . Soccer football americans say football when
29:44 we mean american football , but the rest of the
29:46 world says football when they mean soccer . Maybe ,
29:50 maybe it's when you don't know when you can't make
29:53 a decision or when you're not sure about something .
29:56 Okay . So someone tosses you an opinion . Someone
29:58 says their their idea to you . I think it's
30:01 going to rain tomorrow . You can say , yeah
30:02 , maybe you don't know for sure yes or no
30:05 , but it's possible . It's a good sort of
30:07 in between expression . But if you use maybe all
30:10 the time it's gonna sound really strange and it's gonna
30:12 sound like you can't make a decision . So use
30:15 may be very sparingly . Don't use it so often
30:18 . Maybe is very commonly used as a soft .
30:20 No , it's up to you to figure that out
30:22 among the people that you're talking to though . You
30:25 want to stay over at my house this weekend and
30:27 maybe I couldn't agree with you more . You are
30:31 in complete agreement with the other person and really want
30:34 to communicate that to them . You think that what
30:37 they have just said is really really correct . Super
30:40 correct . Yes . You are completely on board with
30:43 that idea . You can say I couldn't agree with
30:46 you more . I couldn't the negative form . I
30:48 could not agree with you more meaning . It's not
30:51 possible that I could agree more with what you're saying
30:55 next week . It's really important that we have a
30:59 barbecue because summer is ending and then your friend can
31:03 say I couldn't agree more . That's a fantastic idea
31:06 . I'll buy steak . I think we're going to
31:10 have to agree to disagree , agree to disagree .
31:14 This is a kind of it seems like a simple
31:16 phrase , agree to disagree . So you're agreeing with
31:20 the other person . You agree that we have a
31:23 different opinion , agree to disagree . I would use
31:26 this expression at the end of a discussion . So
31:29 person A . And person B . Have different opinions
31:32 and they've been discussing those opinions for a long time
31:35 . And person A . Is not changing his or
31:37 her opinion . Person B . Is not changing his
31:39 or her opinion . So you can say at the
31:41 end of the conversation , okay , we have to
31:44 agree to disagree . Let's just accept our different opinions
31:48 and move on in the conversation . You have a
31:51 point there . This is not necessarily a an agreement
31:56 or disagreement phrase . It's a small agreement within a
31:59 larger discussion . So maybe you've been discussing a topic
32:03 for a long time and you've disagreed with the other
32:07 person until this this time this person says something and
32:11 you agree with that , you have a point there
32:14 . So there's one thing that this person has said
32:16 that you can agree with , you can say you
32:19 have a point there . I think that's correct or
32:21 I agree with that point . That's exactly how I
32:24 feel . That's exactly how I feel , meaning my
32:28 feeling is the same as your feeling or my opinion
32:31 is the same as your opinion . That's exactly how
32:34 I feel . Maybe you can use this if someone
32:37 describes your feeling very accurately , for example , you
32:40 can say I feel like the company is really heading
32:42 in a nice new direction . You can say ,
32:44 yeah , that's exactly how I feel . I really
32:46 like the new boss . I don't think so .
32:49 I don't think so . It's soft , it's not
32:52 so direct . It's not a hard I disagree ,
32:55 but just I don't think so . Of course you
32:57 can use it to discuss opinions but you can also
33:00 use it when you're making plans . Are you going
33:02 to that party this weekend ? And I don't think
33:04 so . It's not a disagreement , but it can
33:06 be used as a negation phrase and a negative response
33:11 to something when used as an opinion . I think
33:13 chinese is the hardest language to learn . You can
33:16 say , I don't think so . I think that
33:18 Arabic is the hardest language to learn . Yes ,
33:20 you're right . Yes , you're right means you're correct
33:23 . Yes , I agree with you . I think
33:25 that's the right information . I think that's the correct
33:27 opinion . Just a very clear by agreement phrase .
33:30 You're right . It also has the nuance of being
33:33 correct . So maybe there was there was a possibility
33:37 the other person could be incorrect . Did you know
33:40 that pepperoni pizza is the most delicious pizza in the
33:44 world ? Yes , you're right . You can change
33:47 it to , that's right for that opinion . You
33:48 can use your to talk specifically about the person itself
33:52 . But that's right . Yes , that's right .
33:53 That information is correct . I guess so . I
33:57 guess so . It's an agreement but it's sort of
34:00 a flaky agreement I guess . So . It's like
34:03 you don't really want to make a decision but you
34:06 don't feel strongly in one like an agreement or disagreement
34:10 you can say I guess so . It's usually said
34:12 with this tone of voice I guess so . You
34:15 know , we don't really say I guess so .
34:16 Generally it's like you can't quite make a decision or
34:19 you don't want to make a decision . You can
34:21 say I guess so . But hey , we're gonna
34:23 go for chinese food for dinner tonight . Do you
34:25 want to come ? Yeah , I guess so .
34:27 You don't feel strongly either way ? I guess so
34:30 . I'm afraid I disagree is a rather polite expression
34:33 that you can use in a business situation . For
34:35 example I'm afraid here doesn't mean I'm actually scared or
34:39 I'm really frightened but just it's a softener that's used
34:42 at the beginning of sentences to introduce a negative opinion
34:46 . So I'm afraid I disagree or I'm afraid I
34:48 can't agree with you . For example , I think
34:50 that you need to adopt a new policy for your
34:52 company . I'm afraid I disagree . It's a soft
34:55 disagreement that sounds a bit more formal than some of
34:59 the other phrases we've talked about so far . Absolutely
35:02 , absolutely means 100% . Yes , exactly , precisely
35:06 , definitely . It's a quick and clear and can
35:09 be polite as well as casual um , word that
35:12 means you agree with the other person . Hey ,
35:15 do you want to go to the beach this weekend
35:16 ? Yeah , absolutely . Absolutely . Oh , that's
35:19 in . So those are some phrases that you can
35:22 use to agree and disagree with other people . There
35:25 are a lot of them so , and you can
35:27 kind of mix and match them as you see fit
35:30 . So give them a try . Thanks very much
35:32 for watching this episode of Top Words and we'll see
35:34 you again soon . Bye fly his beach . Mm
