00:01 Yeah . Today since we've been observing plant , uh
00:09 soil and plants . We've been observing those um we
00:15 are going to today observe something else for our terrarium
00:22 and some of you have noticed what that was we're
00:24 going to be observing and exploring crickets and what it
00:28 has to do and going to have to do with
00:31 our with our With our food chain . Okay so
00:37 we're developing our food chain . Please turn to page
00:40 19 in your journals . Now , what we're going
00:46 to do is we're going to get our materials managers
00:50 and I've got a tray of objects and let's show
00:52 you those objects first . Okay I'm going to you're
00:56 going to get materials managers are going to get a
01:00 tray and on the trail . You've got a container
01:04 inside the container is a cricket . Now there might
01:07 be one or two containers with more than one cricket
01:11 . Okay . You're also going to get for magnifying
01:17 glasses . Okay wow . Once this is on your
01:22 table , mm . Yeah the materials managers can come
01:29 get the terrarium as well . Okay , so one
01:33 terrarium per group . Whoa . Uh , a real
01:44 life cricket , wow . A give me five .
01:58 That means your hands are free eyes on me .
02:01 Give Me five . Yeah . Remember we want to
02:06 be participants . Not observers . Okay . We're going
02:11 to observe but we want to take part in it
02:15 . Okay , good job . Now the first thing
02:18 we're gonna observe are the crickets . Now , that's
02:22 what we've got . I want you to uh think
02:24 about and I want you to talk to your to
02:29 your partner , to your buddy that's next to you
02:32 and I want you to decide whether or not you
02:35 think that a cricket is an insect ? Go ahead
02:41 . Talk to your buddy . Talk to your buddy
02:43 , decide whether or not cricket is an insect .
02:50 Uh uh uh uh a uh a give me five
03:25 and look at me . That means nothing is in
03:28 your hands . Your eyes are on me . We
03:33 want to stay participants . Okay . I'd like to
03:37 see all beautiful eyeballs . You can straighten that out
03:40 . That's fine . Okay , What did you decide
03:44 is a cricket and insect and be ready to tell
03:49 me why . Okay , Isabelle , I think a
03:54 creek , it's not an integer because insects , most
03:57 insects have six legs and crickets only have four .
04:00 Okay . Okay . So you think it only has
04:03 four ? Does uh , does anyone want to add
04:06 to what Isabel is saying is about , would you
04:09 choose someone please As do you agree with Isabel ?
04:15 I don't agree with Isabel because uh , the cricket
04:21 do the cricket , does it , yeah , does
04:25 have six legs and insects has active actor the ranks
04:31 in the head with Okay , good job Skylar .
04:35 Would you enlighten us please ? I think it isn't
04:38 , It sucked me in jail and I think it's
04:41 an insult because it has six legs . Um ,
04:44 they needed like somewhere to live like in grass and
04:48 also , and they need to like I saw you
04:50 so they can dig on the ground . Okay .
04:52 All right . Well with that in mind . And
04:55 guys , you've had awesome and uh , conversation and
04:59 good feedback . Excuse me . And also has some
05:03 tennis . Okay , good , good , good .
05:06 That you're , you're absolutely right . What I'd like
05:09 you to do now as a group is I want
05:12 you to take your magnify IRS and your eyes and
05:14 we're going to observe carefully . You're going to do
05:17 numbers one and two . That means you are going
05:20 to draw your , going to absorb the crickets in
05:22 your container . You're gonna draw a large picture of
05:26 one of the crickets and then you're gonna use your
05:29 chart at the bottom there and you're going to answer
05:34 question to Do you think a quick it is an
05:36 insect ? Why or why not ? So you're gonna
05:38 have to prove it with your drawing And don't forget
05:42 to label when you draw . Way you have to
05:52 wait . Did you look at your chart ? Can
06:08 you find everything ? Can you find everything on the
06:12 way A I like the way you're starting your drawing
06:20 . Remember to label your drawings , go ahead and
06:23 start your drawing finish your drawing hunt . I want
06:29 it turned around . There we go . Did you
06:35 check and make sure that it has everything that's on
06:38 the chart ? Yes , you did . Yeah .
06:43 Okay . Can you draw it for me ? Draw
06:47 and label label the parts for me ? I like
06:51 the way you're using your chart to help you with
06:54 your good job . What you're gonna do is like
06:57 you're going to draw a line like this and write
06:59 what that part is . You're going to draw a
07:01 line like this and and write down the word for
07:05 that part . Okay , So you're gonna name all
07:06 the parts for me . Okay , boys and girls
07:13 give me five . Look at me and give me
07:16 five . Look at me and give me five .
07:19 I like the way your hands are free . I
07:23 like that . All eyes are on me , right
07:26 , Isaiah . Right . Drake . Thank you .
07:31 Okay , we have you've been doing some great observations
07:35 . I'm seeing some wonderful drawings and labeling . You
07:38 can continue , but I want you to answer number
07:41 two right now . Let's go ahead and answer number
07:44 two . So we can begin our discussion . You
07:48 have to tell me if it is an insect or
07:51 not and why ? Okay , go ahead and answer
07:56 number two , then you can go back to who
07:58 would like to share their response for number two ?
08:02 Who has it down and would like to share their
08:06 reported uh share their response . Okay . Would you
08:09 like to take the hot seat ? Listen I think
08:16 it's an insect because it has six legs , three
08:19 body parts and four antennas . I know that because
08:24 I took a magnifying glass and look at it real
08:26 close . Excellent . Okay . J you want to
08:29 go ahead and read yours ? It is a insect
08:32 because it got an Activia Activia thorax and they had
08:38 six bags and and four and antennas . That's and
08:44 that is why it's an incident . Okay . Nice
08:48 job . Let's give them the firecracker clap please .
08:54 Good job let's have a seat . Okay . Now
09:04 you've told me that this is an insect and you
09:06 told me why you told me that it had three
09:10 body parts . What was one of the body parts
09:13 that you noticed ? What was one of the body
09:15 parts ? Yes . The thorax . Um And in
09:19 a minute I'm gonna have you show me what that
09:21 is and where it is . What's another body part
09:24 that you saw ? What's another body part ? The
09:28 legs ? Good . Okay . What's another body part
09:31 ? Okay . All right . What else did you
09:35 notice ? And see Isabelle ? The antenna ? The
09:42 antenna . Okay . All right . Go ahead .
09:45 Yeah . A little It is it is it is
09:55 it by the head or is it on the other
09:57 end its head ? It's by the head . Okay
10:01 . It's legs . Okay . All right . Well
10:04 let's look up here . I would like uh C
10:09 . J . What weren't you ? One of the
10:10 ones I'd asked you to . What body part did
10:13 you identify ? Would you come up here and show
10:16 me where that is the thorax . Do we agree
10:19 that the thorax is between the head and the abdomen
10:22 , thumbs up or thumbs down ? Okay . Who
10:25 disagrees ? Does anyone disagree ? No ? Okay ,
10:28 good job . That's absolutely right . Who can name
10:31 ? And I uh show me where another body part
10:33 is . Okay . Isabel here . Let's get over
10:39 a little bit . There you go . The antenna
10:41 . Okay . All right . The abdomen . Good
10:50 job . Uh huh , swings . Excuse me .
10:57 The wings . The wings . Yes . That's one
11:01 thing I noticed that a lot of you did not
11:03 have an insects have wings . Okay , there are
11:07 wings . Okay . Good job . Good job .
11:12 Okay . So we've identified the antenna . The thorax
11:19 . The wings . What was the other one ?
11:22 We identified Miss Hollenbeck's get No , she's forgetting that
11:25 . What ? Uh thorax . Okay . Who can
11:29 name another body part from up here ? Uh brian
11:32 Come on up . Okay . Head . Good skylar
11:41 . Can you identify another body part ? We haven't
11:43 mentioned ? Look I'm Bonderman the abdomen . Okay the
11:49 abdomen . Good job . Now one thing that a
11:54 lot of you and I noticed that uh drake had
12:00 these on his um drawing and notice there is another
12:10 extension here . Does anyone look at your look carefully
12:13 at your uh cricket ? Does yours have this ?
12:19 It looks like a stick on the end there .
12:21 Does it have that extension at the end ? Some
12:26 will some won't yeah some will some won't raise your
12:35 hand . If you're a cricket raise your hand .
12:39 If you if you have a cricket that has that
12:41 extension raise that raise your hand . You might not
12:46 have won . And that's okay . Um Okay look
12:50 up here . Put your crickets down look up here
12:55 . Okay this is called . And over depositor .
13:02 This is an over posit or what that does .
13:04 That's on females . And it's a tube . And
13:08 what that tube does is it delivers the eggs ,
13:12 the eggs go through that tube and they delivered in
13:16 the ground . Okay . And so that's how they
13:19 deliver their eggs , their little babies , their little
13:22 eggs . Okay . Uh huh . For fertilization and
13:27 growth . Okay so that's an over posit . Er
13:31 Now if I want you to turn to page 19
13:38 you're going to answer three and four because you're gonna
13:42 look to see if you can find the following body
13:44 parts on your cricket . If you don't have it
13:46 labeled on your cricket , please label the body parts
13:50 . Okay . Yes , I still have my classroom
13:53 from earlier . I'm one of those two lines on
13:57 the back of them . Okay . Those um or
14:01 like Celia there their little hairs . Their little hairs
14:06 . And what they do , what do you think
14:07 they might do ? Mhm . How would it help
14:12 them in case they get lost ? Okay . He
14:18 is right that their sensors he is right that their
14:21 sensors so they can feel uh fuel . And plus
14:25 it helps . Have you heard the crickets make the
14:27 noise when they rub their legs ? Okay . That
14:30 also helps in that too because it's got the little
14:33 uh they had the little hairy parts on those back
14:36 legs . And um it is the males that make
14:41 the noise not the females because one is going to
14:48 sing . Uh they want to compete for the females
14:52 and so they want to say I'm the prettiest singer
14:56 . So they're going to do that . Okay .
14:59 Okay . Ali would you please read , gently touch
15:03 the tip of your pencil to one of the crickets
15:07 antenna ? What does it do ? Okay so you're
15:10 going to and you're going to choose one person in
15:14 your group and we're going to let the leaders do
15:18 that . The leader in each group is going to
15:20 have that job and you're going to just gently touch
15:25 it . I'm not gonna do it for you because
15:26 I want you to observe what happens when you just
15:29 gently touch the intent . You're not gonna stab it
15:31 . You're just gonna gently touch that antenna . Okay
15:36 , gently touch that antenna and see what you're doing
15:40 . No , just one person look . But you
15:43 need to observe what he does . Please write down
15:50 your observations , put the lid back on the container
15:56 and please write down your observations . Be ready to
15:59 share . Remember when you're writing detail , you're painting
16:03 a picture with words . Okay . I would like
16:07 the reporter on each team to tell me what you
16:14 observed . The reporter on each team . Now the
16:18 reporter on this team , Who's the reporter on this
16:20 team . Okay . Can you tell me what you
16:22 observed ? It just started to run away in a
16:26 circle . It started to run in a circle .
16:28 Okay . Do you have any ideas why that that
16:31 might have happened ? No . No . Okay .
16:35 Does anybody on your team have an idea ? Go
16:37 ahead . Because , um , maybe , um ,
16:42 who the cricket was thinking that we're trying to threaten
16:47 it ? Okay , so bye bye bye . Feeling
16:50 that on his antenna . He thought that might have
16:52 been a threat . So he's running away . All
16:54 right , good thinking . Um , who is the
16:57 reporter in this group ? Are you the reporter in
17:00 your group ? Can you tell me , um can
17:02 you tell the class what yours dead ? The freaking
17:06 job that ran around the box . You almost got
17:09 out . Okay , good . Um , who is
17:13 the ? Thank you guys . I'm liking your reasoning
17:16 . I'm liking your responses . Um , Drake ,
17:20 uh , who is the uh , reporter on this
17:25 team ? You are . Okay . Can you tell
17:28 us what happened when the pencil was touched to the
17:30 antenna ? When we was trying to touch the and
17:36 I mean , the cricket with the pencil kept on
17:39 running away in circles and , and we didn't get
17:44 the touch it because it kept on jumping . Well
17:48 , we touched it a couple of times , but
17:49 when we actually did touch it , there were sometimes
17:53 we touched it a couple of times that it stayed
17:55 still and we tried to touch it again during the
17:57 second time . I tried to touch it ran off
18:00 . Okay . All right , Nice job . Okay
18:03 . I would like my materials people to come up
18:08 here . What you're going to do , what the
18:11 material managers are going to do when they get back
18:15 to their , uh , desks . They're going to
18:19 fold their their piece of construction paper in half .
18:24 They're going to make a tent . It's gonna look
18:26 like a tent . And we're going to see what
18:30 happens when we put this little tent inside the container
18:37 . What do you think the cricket will do ?
18:39 First of all , I want you to turn to
18:41 someone in your group and I want you to within
18:44 your group . Talk about you going back , talk
18:46 about what you think might happen When this is in
18:49 there . Give Me five . Give Me five .
19:01 Give Me five . What do you think will happen
19:07 ? Didn't what do you think will happen when the
19:11 tent is placed inside the container ? What do you
19:16 think ? I thought they would just go inside of
19:19 it and hide ? Okay . All right , jay
19:25 . I think it might be trying to um smelled
19:28 or get the sense or something to figure out what
19:31 it is . Because most of the crickets do do
19:35 that in cases like a case is like a danger
19:39 or something . Okay . Do you think he'll go
19:42 inside it or go on top of it or what
19:45 do you think he'll do ? I think he's gonna
19:47 gonna shine . Okay . All right . All right
19:51 , let's observe . Please put these you can open
19:55 up the k just have your friends have the team
19:57 do it together and make sure put the lid back
20:01 on top so that the cricket doesn't hop out .
20:05 Okay ? Now give it a few minutes . Let's
20:08 see what happens after a few minutes . Just just
20:11 watch and see what it does . It it's kind
20:21 of observing it . Okay . It's crazy . It's
20:31 okay now what what I want you to do now
20:37 and this we're going to add our crickets To our
20:43 terrarium , wait a minute . You need to listen
20:46 to all instructions . 1st , our eyes on me
20:52 . Okay ? You're going to carefully wait uh lift
20:59 the lid and then you can't dump this out and
21:04 then take the tent out and I want you to
21:06 watch and see what happens . I will give you
21:09 a lid for the containers in a moment , but
21:11 go ahead and put your cricket in and observe .
21:16 Think there's anything in here , I think . Give
22:27 me five . Give me five . Go ahead and
22:36 put the lid on your terrarium and finish finish writing
22:40 your observation on number seven . Please describe how they
22:50 move and what they do and where they go .
22:58 Mhm . Maybe it's time . Maybe need some food
23:02 . He has food in there . What do you
23:05 think the food is ? Grass ? Okay , let's
23:09 let's fight our observations . Let's fight our obs .
23:12 Did you describe ? Did you paint a picture with
23:15 words ? Can you You still need to complete your
23:23 writing . But who would like to while we're finishing
23:27 up our writings ? Who would like to share their
23:30 observations ? Cricket walked around at first he is on
23:36 press then we couldn't find them . And I saw
23:41 some brass with um , they and he was in
23:47 the dirt but he climbed out a some more breast
23:52 after that . He climbed all over the brush .
23:55 Okay , very good . Now he said something very
23:59 interesting that , um , uh , that he couldn't
24:03 see him at first in the grass . That they
24:06 couldn't uh , think think about what the cricket looks
24:11 like . Think about the coloring of the grass .
24:14 And can you tell me um , about the color
24:20 of the cricket and the grass and why that's important
24:23 . It must have been camouflaging itself because , because
24:27 of the predators and he could have turned himself green
24:33 or brown and when he came applied to herself ,
24:39 hey , it ones into the grass . Okay .
24:43 He blends into the grass is kind of the same
24:45 color of the grass sometimes in the brown uh sort
24:48 of the dirt . So he's hiding , isn't he
24:51 ? Um uh Excellent . Excellent . All right .
24:55 We have been exploring books . Should be in your
24:58 lap . We have been exploring crickets . Okay .
25:05 I want you to turn to the person next to
25:09 you . You can group yourself in threes or wait
25:11 a minute . You don't know what you're going to
25:12 talk about yet . Okay . And I want you
25:15 to tell me or I want you to discuss with
25:18 with each other . What were the most interesting things
25:23 you found ? Maybe something new ? You learned something
25:28 interesting or uh , just something surprising . Okay .
25:35 All right . Turning , turning discuss . Okay .
25:40 Okay . Okay . Okay . Okay . Okay .
26:10 Okay . Okay . Would you start us out and
26:17 share with us then ? Um I'm the critic ,
26:21 the crickets and and and my team's terrarium . Um
26:25 They won was , when was digging ? Woman's digging
26:29 a hole to make to make it home and the
26:32 other one was exploring around the terrarium . Okay .
26:35 So I was digging . Okay . Okay . Um
26:39 Pick someone who wants to share or they might want
26:43 to comment on what you said melissa . Yeah .
26:49 Well uh my group they're almost the same exact thing
26:56 . Just you didn't dig . Didn't dig . Okay
26:59 . So what to tell me in your your own
27:01 words , what did it do ? It ? Uh
27:04 It hopped around grass and when he got on the
27:08 hill he hopped down . It was kind of funny
27:12 . It was a girl . Okay . And you
27:15 knew that because it had the little uh it's a
27:20 little like a tube . I remember what that was
27:25 called . No no who remembers what that's called and
27:29 help her out . You can you can choose who
27:33 you want to help you out . It's what is
27:36 what the female has to deliver the baby somewhere .
27:40 Okay . Good good . All right good job .
27:45 What's what was surprising ? And we we we touched
27:48 it we observed it . We uh we looked to
27:52 see what it would do when a tent was inside
27:55 . We looked and and saw how it reacted to
27:59 its new home . Okay . What was surprising ?
28:02 James Man Ethan says we didn't know it could fly
28:07 . Did it fly or did it jump it jumped
28:10 has um listen on and I almost saw it slide
28:16 but it got scared . Okay well did the wings
28:19 surprise you ? Is that what is that what you're
28:21 so you didn't think it had wings ? Right okay
28:24 . All right . So that was an interesting discovery
28:27 . It surprise surprise me when um when they when
28:32 they kept on like every single time we took our
28:35 eyes off off the cricket when we was right in
28:39 a week um Put it back on the cricket .
28:41 We couldn't find a cricket and then somehow like camouflage
28:46 into the dirt and it was eating the C .
28:48 C . Stuff . Okay . All right now um
28:52 you guys told uh you guys found out how a
28:58 plant gets its food . It makes its food .
29:02 Okay . That's why it's a producer . It makes
29:05 its food . How do you think the crickets gonna
29:08 get its food ? Mhm . Does it make its
29:12 own food ? How does it how does it get
29:14 its food ? Uh Grass eating the grass ? Okay
29:22 . She thinks it eats the grass ? How many
29:25 feel the same way ? How many feel that would
29:26 eat the grass ? Okay . All right . What
29:29 else anything else is that the only plant it might
29:32 eat ? Yes . It could go out and find
29:36 plants to eat and sometimes it might eat other animals
29:40 . Do you think it eats animals ? Okay .
29:43 How many thing crickets only eat grass or other plants
29:47 ? Okay . Okay . And we're going to find
29:50 that out . How many think crickets eat grass and
29:54 other animals , or rather insects ? Okay . We
29:59 too . Okay . So we have a couple of
30:03 people who think they both do we know what we
30:09 call an animal that eats both uh plants and animals
30:14 ? Yes . Uh huh . Yeah . You forgot
30:19 . Okay . Think about it . And share again
30:21 in a moment would you say what type of animal
30:24 eats both plants and other other consumers move or ?
30:29 Okay , so an Omnivore ? That's right . So
30:33 we're gonna we're going to decide if it's what do
30:36 we call it , only eats meat ? Yeah .
30:39 Uh Yes , they are meat eaters . But there
30:43 is another another word for that , but mediators is
30:46 still correct . What else ? Uh Animal ? Okay
30:51 . Carnivores . Carnivores . Very good . So we've
30:54 got carnivores . Omnivores . What if it only eats
30:58 plants ? What do we call those animals that eat
31:02 only plants or herbivore ? Herbivores ? Good job .
31:07 Now we have begun our food chain and we're going
31:12 to continue it tomorrow I'm going to give you a
31:15 word to think about and it may be a word
31:18 you've heard before . It may not be . I'm
