00:03 Hi , I'm Nancy Walter . I am the math
00:05 and science product developer here at Educational Insights . I
00:08 was a math and science teacher for 11 years ,
00:10 and I'm also the mother of two young Children .
00:12 Unfortunately , research suggests that kids lose up to 2.5
00:16 months worth of math skills over the summer . This
00:19 is probably because math doesn't slip as easily into summer
00:21 activities to say reading or science exploration . So we
00:26 have some ideas for what you can do to help
00:28 with this problem and even , perhaps , give your
00:30 kids a leg up in math over the summer .
00:32 One thing that you could do is make homemade flashcards
00:36 for younger kids . You can make flashcards with ,
00:37 say , two circles and the numeral two so that
00:40 kids can learn the numbers . And then for older
00:43 kids , you can have them work on their edition
00:45 . There subtraction , their multiplication , their division at
00:48 educational insights . We've actually taken flashcards one step further
00:51 . After all , this is summer , and it
00:53 should be fun . So we have a set of
00:54 interactive flash cards that actually provide your Children with feedback
00:58 as they work their way through the flashcards . So
01:03 for the younger kids . We have aced the talking
01:05 teaching dog , and now we also have a cat
01:08 and kids use them with the flash cards and they
01:10 use the pen . They select their answer . They
01:12 touch it to the dot , and it gives them
01:14 feedback with flashing lights and interactive phrases to let them
01:17 know if they're right or wrong . You're the cat's
01:20 me out . Try again for older kids . We
01:24 also have a hot dots pen that looks like this
01:26 , and we have interactive flash cards , for example
01:29 . In addition , subtraction , multiplication and division and
01:32 kids can even work on word problems . We have
01:34 word problem card sets as well . Our electronic games
01:38 are also a great way to practice key math skills
01:40 over the summer . For example , mass lamb is
01:42 a great way to practice , addition and subtraction .
01:45 Mass shark you can use to practice addition , subtraction
01:48 , multiplication , division decimals , fractions , percentages .
01:51 These are a great way to pass the time in
01:54 the car , on long road trips and on airplane
01:57 flights . Games are another great way to slip math
02:00 practice into your summer routine , and lots of parents
02:02 just make up their own . For example , you
02:04 can grab a ruler and measure things around the house
02:07 or at the park . I used to have my
02:08 students actually measure their bedroom and their bed and their
02:12 desk and that actually create a bedroom blueprint for younger
02:15 kids . You can trace your foot or trace their
02:18 foot and then cut it out and measure things by
02:20 feet . Of course , the eye has a measurement
02:23 game . We also have games focused on , for
02:26 example , fractions . And this year we even have
02:28 a cool rock and math game , which is focused
02:31 on a variety of key third grade math skills .
02:34 I hope you've been inspired by the summer math activities
02:36 . If you have a great idea for a way
02:38 to practice math with your kids over the summer ,
02:40 I would love to hear about it . You can
02:42 shoot me . An email at Nancy at educational insights
