00:09 be taking a deeper look into nonfiction . In a
00:12 non fiction book er article . You will see many
00:14 different nonfiction text features that explain what you are reading
00:18 about . It's important to look at these nonfiction text
00:21 features because they help you better understand the topic in
00:25 your book . Also , it's fun to look at
00:27 those different nonfiction text features . When looking through a
00:32 nonfiction piece of text , you may see maps ,
00:34 diagrams , charts and graphs . Thes air just a
00:37 few nonfiction features you may see in your reading .
00:41 Now let's look at these features to see how they
00:43 help us become better readers . Here is an example
00:50 of a page in a non fiction book about ecosystems
00:53 and food chains . Let's take a moment to look
00:56 at the images that stand out to us or pop
00:59 first . I see the text within the text are
01:03 bold ID words . These words must be important .
01:07 Oh , I see something else . Do you see
01:10 it at the bottom of the page ? That is
01:13 a diagram . Let's zoom in closer to the diagram
01:18 . It must tell me more about what I'm going
01:20 to be learning about this diagram must tell me about
01:25 food chains . There's a lot of information here .
01:28 Take a moment to look at the pictures and words
01:31 in the diagram . Now that I have previewed the
01:43 diagram , let's read the article and see how it
01:45 can help us better understand our reading . Follow along
01:49 . As I read , There are many living things
01:54 on earth . Some living things are animals , and
01:58 some living things are plants . Plants and animals need
02:02 to work together to keep a ecosystem in balance .
02:07 Plants and animals need nutrients and energy in order to
02:12 survive . Plants receive energy from the sun . Therefore
02:16 , they are called producers . Animals eat different kinds
02:20 of food for energy . Animals that eat plants are
02:23 called herbivores or primary consumers . As a food chain
02:28 moves on , there are secondary consumers or carnivores .
02:32 The pattern that is created when animals eat plants and
02:36 other animals to get energy is called Ah food chain
02:41 . Wow . I learned a lot about food chains
02:45 , but there were so many new words . I
02:48 wonder if I could better understand these words and concepts
02:51 by looking at the diagram . Let's see . This
02:58 diagram is a simpler version of our reading with the
03:01 arrows . I can see that food chains start with
03:04 the sun and moved to a producer , primary consumer
03:08 and secondary consumer . I can also use the photographs
03:12 to help me figure out examples of these consumers .
03:15 Ah , Coyote as a consumer that eats other animals
03:19 , I learned that from the diagram . Why don't
03:24 you take a moment to see what you can learn
03:26 by reading the diagram ? As you can see ,
