Customary Unit Conversions | MathHelp.com

This lesson covers complex numbers. Students learn that a complex number is the sum or difference of a real number and an imaginary number and can be written in a + bi form. For example, 1 + 2i and -- 5 - i root 7 are complex numbers. Students then learn to add, subtract, multiply, and divide complex numbers that do not contain radicals, such as (5 + 3i) / (6 - 2i). To divide (5 + 3i) / (6 - 2i), the first step is to multiply both the numerator and denominator of the fraction by the conjugate of the denominator, which is (6 + 2i), then FOIL in both the numerator and denominator, and combine like terms.

Metric Unit Conversions - YourTeacher.com - Pre Algebra Help

By yourteachermathhelp

Students learn that in the metric system all measures of length are based on meters. For example a centimeter is 1/100 of a meter. And all measures of weight are based on grams. For example a kilogram is 1000 grams. And all measures of volume are based on liters. For example a milliliter is 1/1000 of a liter. Students are then asked to solve problems using conversion factors such as 4 500 milligrams = ____ grams.

Units of Measurement - MathHelp.com - Pre Algebra Help

By yourteachermathhelp

Students learn that customary units can be converted to metric units and metric units can be converted to customary units using the following conversion factors: 1 mile = 1.6 kilometers 1 liter = 2.1 pints 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters and so on. Students are then asked to solve problems using these conversion factors such as 10 kilometers = ____ miles. Students are also asked to determine which customary unit of measurement and which metric unit of measurement are used to measure a given object. For example milk in a bottle would be measured in gallons (customary) or in liters (metric). Video is good quality and good for all students as a review or initial learning of the topic.

This video takes us through some more advanced unit conversion problems. Here, we can see how to make multiple conversions in the same problem concerning speed. Take particular note of how the units change in each step. More importantly, note how, step by step, our units slowly change into the units we want for our final answer. If you are having trouble understanding why this happens, go to the key concept described at 2:20 in the video. Note that this only occurs when multiplying two quantities, not when adding them!
