A spelling pattern for long e words is that the long “e” is usually spelled with “ee” or “ea” and sometimes “ie” when followed by the letter “c”. Long e can also be spelled e in short words such as me, he, she be, and we. The word “the” is not usually long “e”, but the “e” says “u” like in duck.

Read the sentences below and highlight the long “e” spelled words. (Do not mark the word “the”.) There can be more than one long “e” word in each sentence.

1. We looked for the cat that ran up the tree

2. Sandra and I would like to eat a piece of chocolate cake.

3. Please wash your hands.

4. The ice will freeze in about an hour.
