Teenagers often board school buses before most people have even gotten out of bed, causing chronic sleep deprivation, a major public health concern. This should be scary enough to debate national reform to school schedules. Now researchers state that starting school later in the morning, no earlier than 8:30am, would actually have financial benefits as well. Students who are better rested perform better in school; this translates to better career opportunities later in life which has a positive effect on the national economy. Also, fewer car crashes would result from drowsy teenagers driving to school before they are fully awake.
