Rugby Union

The Rugby Union form of the sports rugby is played by fifteen players per team on an 112-122 meter by 68-meter field. A close relative of American football, the goal of Rugby Union, is to possess the ball and move your team down the field towards a set of goal posts to earn points. Unlike American football though, a team is able to score points through four different actions. They can score a try by grounding the ball in the opponent’s goal area. In the Rugby Union, a try earns a team 5 points. In addition, teams can score three different types of goals. A conversion goal comes after a team has scored a try. Once they have successfully completed a try, the team in possession of the ball is given a chance to kick the rugby ball through the goal posts from the position of the try. If successful, they earn another 2 points. Beyond this, teams can earn points by scoring dropped goals. At any point during active play, a player can drop and kick the ball towards the goal posts. If he is able to send the ball through the goal posts, he earns a drop goal worth 3 points. Finally, teams are given the opportunity to earn additional points through penalty goals. When one team violates Rugby Union game rules, the other team is given a penalty kick from the position of the violation. If the player is able to kick the ball through the goal posts, he garners an additional 3 points for his team. The Rugby Union matches run for 80 minutes (2-40 minute periods) and the team earning the most points wins.
