When we read some words, we notice a spelling pattern. The spelling combination of “oi” and “oy” both make the same vowel sound as in boy. The patterns are used differently. Read the two rules below.

1. If a word has a consonant then the pattern, and ends in a consonant, the spelling is “oi”.

2. If a word has a consonant and the vowel pattern but no consonant at the end, the spelling is “oy”.
