says a new study
emphasising the im-
portance of mentoring the youth. The
study revealed that of the natural men-
tors the respondents identified, teachers
or coaches at their school had a signifi-
cant impact on reducing dangerousbe-
haviour. "If you are made to feel useful
and important to others, especially in this
case by a non-kin and education-based
mentor, then you are more likely to have
a reduction in delinquency and danger-
ous behaviour," said lead author Marga-

in the US. The findings may be encourag
ing for educators, parents and those who
work with youths

company Unacademy is raising a se-

Sequoia Capital India along with
other investors, according to sour-
ces. The round may value the compa-

due to their YouTube channel and ha-
ve good traction on the civil services
side. They are goingtoother verticals
like JEE and K-12 too, but those need
good branding. They are looking to
expand and hire more tutors for crea-

Product startups in India - challenges

In spite of the Indian govern-
ment's fund-of-fund allocation of
10,000 crore, many product inno-
vation startups seek to incorpora-
te in the US. This is mainly becau-
se of thesetworeasons:
Enterprise market is in the US
Acquisitions are a lot easier if
the firm is incorporated in US.
A majority of the Indian
VCs in the US recommend
that Indian startups flip
to the US because of afeAS
ar of companies getting
embroiled in tax and IP-
related issues here. There
have been a few changes in do-
mestic laws recently. However,
this has to
gather pace.

Product development companies in India

ver the past three years, there
has been a lot of activity in the
product innovation startups I
space, both in terms of the num-
ber of startups and the fundssup-
porting them. The term product
innovation' implies startups (Zo-
ho, Tejas Networks, InMobi,
Freshdesk) where intellectual
property is a key differentiator
and is baked into the offering
from the very beginning. Tradi-
tionally, startups in India have in-
novated essentially on technolo-
gy-enabled business models
(Naukri, Flipkart, Ola, MakeMy-
Trip) supported by amazing exe
cution.
Product innovation-based com
panies differentiate themselves
in the market based on their IPs
which provide a defensible entry
barrier and make the offeringag-
nostic to geography and culture.
These companies can be scaled
globally far more easily than
those that are dependent on busi-
ness model innovation.
Product innovation compani
are high-productivity and high-
value creators and critical for
any economy in the 21st century
With the availability of low-cost
technology infrastructure, espe
cially cloud computing and open-
source-based tools, and with the
globalization of markets, it is im
perative that Indian IP-based
product innovation companies
besupported so they can compete
successfully on the world stage
These startups face significant
challenges in maturity, market,
funding, and exits
India, traditionally hasn't been
a strong product nation. Given
the nascent stage of product in
novation and the traditional lack
of a product culture, important
areas like product management
and product marketing need sig
nificant enhancement. Doing en-
terprise deals also requires
strong business development
partnerships, sales and market-
ing capabilities.
It is very hard for an ecosystem
to thrive if the local market is
weak. In the US, for example,
product innovation-based com
panies can find customers and
partners locally because every-
e is looking for a competitive
edge to succeed in the market. In
India, enterprise customers and
government are reluctant buyers
from startups. This needs to
change with the right set of incen-
tives so that Indian product inno-
vation companies can compete
effectively and solve global-scale
problems efficiently. Being suc-
cessful in India will enable these
companies to go after the vast
markets of other emerging econ-
omies.
GETTING AROUND
Product
innovation-
based firms
can be scaled globally
far more easily than
those that are de-
pendent on business
model innovation
For investors to continue to in-
vest in thissector, exitsareimpor
tant. However, according to Ven
ture Intelligence, the number of
exits between 2008 and 2017 in this
space was just 74, with a total val-
ue of $681 million for a total in-
vestment of close to $4 billion.
This number needs to change for
the benefit of the ecosystem. The
question, therefore, that needs to
be addressed is: what measures
need to be taken to foster the de-
velopment of Indian product in
novation startups?

Guided dieting for diabetes

Guided Dieting can

illions of pa-

management, ac
cording to a new
study. Research time and again has
showed that radical low-calorie diet un-
der medical supervision can reverse type
2 diabetes. The present study, The Diabe-
tes Remission Clinical Trial (DIRECT), says
doctors may be able to normalise blood
sugar levels in their patients without pre-
scribing any medicine. Roy Taylor, pro-
fessor of medicine and metabolism at
Newcastle University said the DiRECT
study "shows conclusively that type 2 di-
abetes is caused by chronic calorie ex
cess." DIRECT, funded by the charity Dia-
betes UK, tracked 298 patients whose
diabetes had been diagnosed during the
previous six years. Half were assigned to
take diabetes drugs and receive conven-
tional weight-loss advice. The other half
were told to stop taking all drugs for dia-
betes and to eat a low-calorie diet bal-
anced in nutrients - within 853 calories a
day - for up to five months. They were
then guided by their doctors to gradually
reintroduce a normal diet over two to
eight weeks. After a year, 46% were
cured of their diabetes and were off
drugs. Also, study participants who lost
the most weight benefitted the most too.
