John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich in England, was famous for gambling. He often spent long hours at the card table. History says that he didn’t want to stop playing to eat, so he ordered meat put between two slices of bread so that he could have a meal and continue with the game. His official biographer says that he invented the sandwich not to keep gambling, but to keep from being interrupted while carrying out his devoted service to his community and country.

Who said that the Earl of Sandwich invented the sandwich so that he could keep working, not so that he could keep gambling?

An astronomer used to go out every night to observe stars. Often, he would be seen with a telescope in one hand and a notebook in the other. One evening, while he wandered through the suburbs with his attention fixed on the sky, he accidentally fell into a deep uncovered well. He cried out loudly for help. As he waited to be rescued, he moaned and howled about his sores and bruises. His neighbor was passing by and happened to hear his wailing and weeping. He quickly helped him out of the well. After he came to know how the accident happened, this is what he said to the astronomer: “Hark you old fellow, why in striving to pry into heaven, do you not manage to see what is on earth?”

Good manners can be seen at home, at school, on the playground, and at the dining table where we eat our meals. A well mannered person is polite and gentle when he talks.

Everyone likes a person who is polite and good mannered. Good manners are always liked by everyone and bring good rewards.

All that is right pleases everyone. Therefore we should do what is right always. We should always remember to do what is right.

All that is wrong displeases everyone. Therefore, we should not do what is wrong. We will be rewarded for our good actions.

A boy or girl who constantly comes late for any work cannot be depended upon. People do not give him any important work for they do not know whether he will come on time or not. A person who is always late loses his friends.

All of us make mistakes. When we make a mistake we do not like to be punished for it. We like to be forgiven. Therefore, we too should forgive the mistakes of others. Forgiveness is a great virtue.

It is easy to make a mistake, but it is not easy to forget that mistake. If we make some mistake, we should feel sorry for it. We should also apologize to the person whom we have hurt.

We should not cheat in an examination. Cheating always does more harm than good. We should not keep bad company.
