Hill Harper’s presentation will focus on our collective efforts to fight against the achievement gap that continues to plague our education system. Harper will share his personal journey and insights as they pertain to education. He will underscore that it is at our national peril if we continue to avoid the aggressive actions needed to overcome this very real pandemic in our education system. Harper offers hope and a fresh perspective, if we are willing to imagine a future with a new narrative around students that we have classified, ignored, and even condemned in the low end of the achievement gap.

In this series of “episodes,” school leaders will take participants through the process of assessing and renovating an outdated, cookie-cutter, school model to a custom-made system that functions to meet the changing needs of students and demands of the workforce. They will share unforeseen challenges, pitfalls, and triumphs that come with demolishing a landmark. Additionally, they will share their progress toward achieving their vision to guarantee each graduate has an Individual Plan of Study, a certificate or acceptance letter for the post-secondary plans, an internship, and engagement in school and community organizations. Finally, participants will also learn about the Kansas State Department of Education’s School Redesign initiative, of which Liberal High School is a founding member. Connections will be made from the LEA level to the SEA level as Kansas seeks to redesign our educational system, before and during a global pandemic.

In this session, the audience will hear how a stated-identified Priority School (lower 10%) moved students to achieve significant gains in the area of Progress and Growth as identified on their state CCRPI scores. The processes used to create a trauma sensitive school, while keeping a focus on student achievement, can be quite difficult. This session will ignite a fire and share ideas that district and school-level leaders can immediately implement. Come and hear from a school that is closing the achievement gap and sustaining previous successes.

This presentation documents a successful collaboration between a school district, a community-based non-profit organization, and two universities. The collaboration provides hundreds of elementary students across multiple schools and settings with targeted literacy interventions. Participants will learn about the framework the program uses to provide training on data driven literacy instruction to its volunteers. Participants will analyze data on student performance growth and review student engagement data captured before and during the months of distance learning. Additionally, participants will see how volunteers modified interventions and assessment protocols during distance learning to ensure student engagement, progress in reading skills, and uninterrupted connection between tutors and students during distance learning. In addition to documented student growth, the collaboration provides volunteer civic engagement and professional development.

As educators strive to transition from traditional to virtual learning, providing equity for students can be difficult. Leaders and teachers are held to high accountability standards when planning and providing services. Since the onset of the pandemic and virtual learning, compliance is a greater challenge as leaders and teachers consider plans of continued support for all student populations. As multi-year participants of the National Title I conference, Dr. Ferebee and Dr. Flowers took steps to ensure there was no lapse in instruction. Participants will engage in conversations about the decision making process used to identify best practices and data analysis and research. Using a roundtable discussion, we will focus on the following questions: Who is accountable for what? How do educators continue to provide supports and services? Which students require blended learning versus a fully virtual environment? Processes for collecting data to make adjustments?

Participants in this session will have an opportunity to learn how the second largest school district in the State of Illinois, School District U-46, is working to design an ecosystem of professional learning for the 42 elementary principals and 20+ elementary assistant principals in the district. The learning ecosystem provides for individual, cohort and whole group leadership development opportunities conducted in differentiated modes of coaching. We will identify how the systems being built link to the Model Principal Supervisor Professional Standards (CCSSO 2015)--as well as share candidly about where our own practice and systems still need to be strengthened. Participants will have an opportunity to use the district example presented to reflect on principal learning in their own contexts. The session will be structured with a Live Q&A following the presentation.

It is easy to assume that English Language Learners will excel in math because math is a “universal language.” We tend to think of math as a subject that does not require a strong command of language. However, using math vocabulary, solving word problems, and understanding mathematical reasoning are closely linked to language. In this session, participants will take away effective strategies to teach academic vocabulary, help students understand written math problems, and increase student language production. These strategies can be applied through in-person or virtual teaching methods. All teachers have the responsibility and opportunity to help their English Language Learners learn the English language. We must work together to ensure our English Language Learners are prepared for now and for tomorrow.

Learn how a rural, high-poverty, school with a large minority population improved reading scores. Getting students on grade level right from the start is crucial but was not happening in my kindergarten classroom. While teaching students from low socioeconomic status, English Language Learners, and students with disabilities, I saw firsthand the barriers that these students faced to building foundational literacy skills. I systematically set out to help my students gain the skills they needed. It was not easy, but the results were dramatic. Hear about my journey to affect significant change, from convincing administration to implementing a multi-sensory approach that is explicit, systematic, highly engaging, and research-based. I will share multi-year data that shows how we can truly change the course of a child’s education by closing the reading gap right from the start!

Grants to support students experiencing homelessness would appear to be focused on equity, but are they? States are tasked with providing funds to districts with the greatest need, but do we? This session will explore how states can use data to determine if students of color, who are often disproportionately impacted by poverty and homelessness, are able to access grant funded programs. We will also take a deep dive into the structure of grant applications to determine if small, rural, or under-resourced districts are able to successfully apply for funding. This will include best practices for using the grant to increase identification, to shift funding to districts with fewer resources, and to help districts include programs and supports aimed at students of different cultural backgrounds.

Pictures offer a universal language for those who struggle with words. At the heart of this innovative approach to literacy learning: treat words and pictures as parallel, complementary, and equal languages for learning. This dynamic multimodal approach to teaching writing and strengthening reading has a three-decade-long history of success with at-risk learners. Observe students at work; listen to their reflections; view the outstanding content-based picture books they create aligned with the English Language Arts Core Standards. Experience the power of this approach to deepen thinking, foster vocabulary development, and teach the magic of word choice. Witness for yourself how words can make a picture come alive! Review compelling findings from a large federally funded evaluation that highlights a Title I school success story and demonstrates effectiveness with a wide range of learners. This session will inspire a renewed sense of promise and opportunity for all students.

2020 provided unprecedented events for many, if not all, of us in education and the entire country. From Covid-19 and all of the changes that resulted because of it,to Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd losing their lives sparking protest throughout the world, 2020 will go down as one of the most tumultuous years ever in American history. While many conversations on these topics and issues have occurred, our session aims to highlight the actions that resulted from these conversations. Talking about problems must lead to solutions to those problems. The process to solving these problems is long, sometimes painful, sometimes uncomfortable, arduous and ongoing. But the future success of our educational system and our country depends on our willingness to do the work. This presentation highlights how one school and district in Arkansas went about that process.
