LEAP SAMPLE QUESTIONS: GRADE 8 English Language Arts

The LEAP is a Computer-Based Longitudinal Assessment System for College and Career Readiness. The students will face a variety of new technology-enhanced questions as a part of the computer-based tests.

Some of them are Multiple choice-single correct responses, Multiple choice-multiple correct responses, Matching Tables, Drag and Drop, Hot text, Table Fill in, Graphing, Equation/numeric, Extended constructed response, Short answer, and many more.

Today, we will share several sample questions along with practice test links for Grade 8 English Language Arts that gives you an idea of questions that your students are likely to see on the test. After each sample question, an explanation follows that includes any important aspects of the task that you may need to consider with respect to the skills, processes, and information your students need to know.

Domain: Grade 8 >> Reading: Literature

Sample Question: The waves crashed against the shore as the wind howled around Bobby. He could see the myriad of shells washed up from the recent storm. The skies were beginning to clear, and he couldn’t help imagine that he could see all the way to Europe from his spot on the coastline.

Where might the reader infer Bobby is?

  1. a beach near the ocean
  2. a lake
  3. a park
  4. a boat

Answer Explanation: Answer choice A is correct. The reader can make this inference based on the crashing waves, shells on the shore, and spot on the coastline. Answer choices B, C, and D are not valid inferences as there is no text to support those answers.

Sample Question: What is denotation

  1. a dictionary definition
  2. what a word means based on its context in a story

Answer Explanation: Detonation means the actual meaning of a wordd. In other words, it is the dictionary definition of the word.

Hence, answer choice A is correct.

Sample Question: Choose the set of words that would make the best ending to the following sentence?

Effective transitions…

Answer Explanation: Answer choice B is correct. Tranisitions are particularly useful when you write longer essays to connect all the important ideas. Tranisitions could be used between sentences in the body of a paragraph as well as between the paragraphs themselves.

Sample Question: Select the pronoun that will best fit into the following sentence.

The instructor put __________ students at ease when he said no one would fail.

Answer Explanation: Answer choice B is correct. When a pronoun and a noun are used together, choose the pronoun that would fit best if the noun were not there. Answer choice A is incorrect because “we” would not fit without the noun students.
