LEAP SAMPLE QUESTIONS: GRADE 5 Math

The LEAP is a Computer-Based Longitudinal Assessment System for College and Career Readiness. The students will face a variety of new technology-enhanced questions as a part of the computer-based tests.

Some of them are Multiple choice-single correct responses, Multiple choice-multiple correct responses, Matching Tables, Drag and Drop, Hot text, Table Fill in, Graphing, Equation/numeric, Extended constructed response, Short answer, and many more.

Today, we will share several sample questions along with practice test links for Grade 5 Math that gives you an idea of questions that your students are likely to see on the test. After each sample question, an explanation follows that includes any important aspects of the task that you may need to consider with respect to the skills, processes, and information your students need to know.

Domain: Grade 5 >> Operations & Algebraic Thinking

Sample Question: A scout troop is using a map with a coordinate grid to find a hidden treasure. They are staying in a cabin located at Point A on the map. The treasure is located at Point B. Which of these can be determined by using the coordinate grid?

  1. How high in a tree the treasure is
  2. The size of the treasure box
  3. How deep the treasure is buried
  4. The distance between the treasure and their cabin

Answer Explanation: A coordinate grid shows the locations of points on a 2-dimensional plane. The points can represent the location of objects and the distance between them, but not their size or location in 3-D space.

Sample Question: What is the correct expanded form of the number 318.04?

  1. 3 x 100 + 1 x 10 + 8 x 1 + 0 x (1/10) + 4 x (1/100)
  2. 310 + 8.04
  3. (3 + 1 + 8 + 0 + 4) x 100
  4. 300 x 10 x 8 x 0.04

Answer Explanation: In expanded form, each digit is multiplied by its place value and the products are added together. The number 318.04 is made up of:

3 hundreds, which is written 3 x 100

1 ten, which is written 1 x 10

8 ones, which is written 8 x 1

0 tenths, which is written 0 x (1/10)

and 4 hundredths, which is written 4 x (1/100).

Domain: Grade 5 >> Number & Operations – Fractions

Sample Question: Jeremy found that it takes 14 centimeter cubes to cover the surface of a rectangular image. Which of these measurements could possibly be the length and width of the rectangle he covered? Assume that centimeter cubes can be cut so that fractional measurements are possible.

  1. Length = 3 ½ cm, width = 4 cm
  2. Length = 4 ½ cm, width = 3 cm
  3. Length = 7 cm, width = 7 cm
  4. Length = 7 cm, width = 3 cm

Answer Explanation: Multiplying length x width of a rectangle should produce the same number as filling the rectangle with unit squares. Therefore, multiply to find that

3 1/2 x 4 = 7/2 x 4 = (7 x 4) / 2 = 28/2 = 14

Domain: Grade 5 >> Measurement & Data

Sample Question: Annie covers the bottom of a box with 6 centimeter cubes (A centimeter cube is a cube of dimensions 1 cm x 1 cm x 1 cm), leaving no gaps. If the volume of the box is 30 cm3, how many more centimeter cubes will she be able to fit inside?

  1. 5
  2. 180
  3. 24
  4. 4

Answer Explanation: If the volume of the box is 30 cm3, it can hold 30 centimeter cubes. Since there are already 6 in the box, there is room for 24 more (30 – 6 = 24).
