Tips to Ace High School

High school is not a cakewalk for everyone. In order to do well, you need to know what your teacher’s expect, how to reach those expectations, and how to get the best grades you can prior to applying for college.

How Top Performers Reach Academic Goals

It is not meant to be a secret; reaching your goals takes planning, hard work, and self-motivation. People who can do this have worked hard to make a plan and stick to it. Setting goals and making a list of steps needed to reach that final goal will help keep you motivated to get there.

Write Your Own Notes

Reading a textbook is fine but writing the information down will help you to remember it in a way that makes sense to you. When you take your own notes, whether it be from a textbook or a lecture, you will remember more of the information.

Note Taking Tips

  • Write down the key points.
  • Do not overdo it. You will not be able to write things word for word.
  • Ask questions. If you feel you missed something that may be important, ask for it to be repeated. Or if you need to clarify a point, ask.
  • Organize your notes when you have time. When you do a review in the evening, go through your notes, and make sure you can still understand them. You may want to expand on them and organize them into charts or diagrams.

    Seek Help

Successful people do not do everything on their own. If you want to be successful, you need to make sure you understand all the course material.
If you are struggling with information or a concept, make sure to get help to understand it before a test or exam.
You can ask other students in the class, ask your teacher for extra help, or get a tutor.

    Peer Discussions

When you are learning new material, it is helpful to discuss it with others. Like writing things down, being able to discuss them will help you to retain the information.
If you can get your point across or teach the concept to your peers, it shows that you have a clear understanding of the information.

    Time Management

To be successful, you need to know how to manage your time effectively. Keep your goals written clearly where you will see them every day. Make a calendar of things you need to do to attain those goals. Follow your schedule as closely as you can to make sure you are prepared in advance of upcoming exams. That will give you time to go back and review everything and ask for any clarification where needed.

    Sufficient Practice and Mock Exams

Make sure you practice the skills you are learning and frequently review the information you must remember. The more you practice and review, the more easily you will recall the information.
You can often find practice tests online or you can ask your teacher for an old test to use for review and practice.

    In a Nutshell

To ace high school, you need to be prepared, have a goal, and work hard to get there. Do not be afraid to ask someone to help you to set up a schedule and to help you stick to it!
