Hybrid Learning Mode: Tips to Make it a Success

There are many schools choosing hybrid learning models for their academic year. The decision to adopt a hybrid learning model should be done with care to maximize the success of students without sacrificing teachers. Sure, there will be a lot more work, but there are some strategies we feel are important and will ease the implementation process. Chances are you have already figured out or thought about the reality that what works for face-to-face instruction may not be plausible for hybrid learning. Here are some tips to help you start off the school year on the right foot.

  1. Focus on relationships. How can you build relationships with your students even amid the COVID-19 pandemic? There are many changes, but it is still possible to interact with students and insure that their physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being is prioritized. Use virtual options to carry on conversations with your students; also, encourage them to socialize with each other. Not all virtual meetings should be about the content. If you notice a child seems to be struggling with any of their basic needs, reach out privately.

  2. Use different strategies. The activities that a face-to-face classroom offers is distinctly different from what can be done online. Some activities may still be feasible, but it will be necessary to present content using a different method. Also, students will interact with the content in a different way that may include synchronous and asynchronous design. Interactive discussions may still be doable via video software platform. Give students the opportunity to view lecture materials at their own pace. Also, assignments can be presented as independent learning tasks similar to in-class instruction. If feasible, hands-on lessons and one-on-one instruction may be best for vulnerable students. Regardless of the strategies used, asking questions and providing timely feedback is critical to the process. The process may not be smooth at first, but work on refining the strategies used until you have a system that works.

  3. Maintain consistent communication. Digital communication platforms have made it easier than ever to stay in touch with students. Regardless if you are hosting live teaching sessions or sending videos, find a way for students to communicate openly and frequently with you. Encourage them to contact you with questions and find ways to make not all communication about content or assignments. It is still important to foster a relationship with students.

  4. Don’t overuse tech tools. While you may need multiple tools to support the instructional process, limit these to three or four. For example, if you are using Google Classroom, you may be able to use Google Meet and other websites that align directly with Google Classroom. By limiting the number of websites students have to use, it is less overwhelming for them to navigate and find assignments. It is critical to have one main place for posting updates, assignments, etc.

  5. Teach students to be good digital citizens. If students understand the importance of using technology for its intended purpose and not wasting time for other tasks, it will be less frustrating for you, students, and their families. Help students to see the benefits of using the technology tools for their intended purpose.

  6. Take care of you. These times are tough and the tasks are never ending. Don’t forget to stop working and focus on your mental health too. Take time away from the digital platforms to relax, rejuvenate, and rest, so you are ready to focus when the time comes.
