Learning How to Work in a Group

It can be hard to work in a group. Some people like to do work by themselves.
Mrs. Taylor told her class they would make a project in groups. Each group would make a different kind of house. She picked which students would work with each other.
Marilyn, Alberto, D’Shawna and Sam were put in one group.
Sam and Alberto did not like each other. They lived on the same street and their brothers did not get along. When she called out their names, they both made ugly faces. Mrs. Taylor did not know about how they felt. She was trying to get kids to learn to get along better in class.
Marilyn and D’Shawna were fine with being in the group. Marilyn knew that D’Shawna was very smart and could help the group.
The teams had to pick who would do what part of the project. D’Shawna took over. She would do the writing. Marilyn would do the speaking. D’Shawna told Alberto and Sam they would make the log cabin together.
The boys grunted to show they did not like the idea. D’Shawna set up rules to go by. She said the boys did not have to talk but had to do their part. At first, they did not speak. They did start talking by the second week. D’Shawna had the team play little games to help them get along. They even started laughing with each other.
The project took 3 weeks in class to make. By the end of it, the boys were friends.
