The Case of the Missing Lasagna

Font Size
1 It was a bright and sunny afternoon at Everton Middle School. Fourth-grade students were returning from lunch. The tardy bell was about to ring. Mr. Hart sat at his teacher’s desk with a smudged red stain on the sleeve of his shirt, while Mrs. Waterton told students to find their seats.
2 “Best lunch I can remember eating in a long time!” Mr. Hart exclaimed. “What was it like for the cafeteria lunch today?” He didn’t get a reply from the students. Instead they all just looked at him rather puzzled by that comment.
3 Out of the blue, Mr. Smith, the principal, called on the intercom system. He asked Mrs. Waterton to come to the office.  When she returned, she asked Mr. Hart to step outside of the classroom.  She then told him that Ms. Abernathy’s lunch had gone missing, had he seen anything since he had been in her room right before lunch.
4 Mr. Hart had an astonished look on his face as he quickly returned to the classroom.  It was then that he went to his desk and picked up his lunch bag. Splat on the floor went the contents of his bag, 2 lettuce wraps and a banana. “Hmmm,” he said to the class while laughing, “Got any ideas about where a missing plate of lasagna for Ms. Abernathy could have gone?”
