Finding Area of Complex Figures

The instructor demonstrates how to find the area of complex figures consisting of one or more rectangles. They show how to break the figure up into two different figures and then add the areas together. The first figure is in the perimeter video so to find the missing sides you could watch that video or just go on in this video and they give you the measurements. They discuss the formula for area of a square and rectangle and use this to find the area of the two figures and then add them together. They also discuss why the area is label as cm squared or inches squared. Then other examples are shown. Video is good quality and good for all students as review or initial learning of the concept.

These problems should be applicable in the real world so that your child will be able to visualize and analyze the situation. Grade 5 math already includes using formulas and creating solutions for math problems. This is the introduction of the more complex math concepts and operations. It is preferable that you guide and aid your child as much as you can at this stage. The danger of having your child experience too much difficulty in the subject is that he or she will completely lose interest in math. You should try to avoid this and help your child develop a strong foundation in math concepts. As your child goes on to learn about harder math, you should also be more willing to give them assistance.
