00:0-1 Welcome to Math with mr J . In this video
00:05 , I'm going to cover how to round decimals Now
00:08 . Rounding is a very important skill because it's used
00:12 all throughout math and life . When we round we
00:15 find a close or approximate value to the number we're
00:18 working with . Rounding helps us make numbers easier and
00:22 simpler to work with and can even make them shorter
00:25 . You've probably come across a very long decimal answer
00:28 on a calculator or after working out a problem .
00:32 Rounding decimals is very useful in these situations along with
00:37 many others . And again , when we round we
00:40 find a close value to our original number . Let's
00:44 jump into our examples and see exactly how we round
00:48 decimals . So for number one we have six and
00:52 78/100 . The first thing that we need to do
00:55 find the place that we're rounding to . For number
00:58 one we're going to round to the 10th place .
01:01 Let's underline the digit in the 10th place . So
01:05 that's seven . Once we have that we look at
01:08 the place and digit to the right , so to
01:11 the right of the place place we have the 100th
01:15 place In the hundreds place . We have the Digit
01:18 eight . So let's draw an arrow to show that
01:21 we are looking to the right now . That digit
01:24 to the right is very important . It determines if
01:27 we round up or stay the same , essentially what
01:31 we're doing we're seeing is this closer to six and
01:35 7/10 or is it closer to six and 8/10 ?
01:39 So five or more ? We round up four or
01:43 less we stay the same . Well eight is more
01:46 than five . So we are going to round up
01:50 I'm going to draw something that looks like an equal
01:53 sign but it's with curved lines that means we're finding
01:57 an approximate or rounded value . So again we're rounding
02:02 up so we are rounding to six and 8/10 .
02:07 That's our final rounded answer . Now I cut that
02:11 decimal off after the 10th place . When we round
02:15 decimals we cut them off after the rounded place .
02:18 We don't need to change everything to the right to
02:21 a zero . Like we do with whole numbers zeros
02:24 to the right of the decimal . Do not change
02:27 the value of that decimal so we can leave them
02:30 off . So again we can cut that decimal off
02:35 After the rounded place . So six and 8/10 .
02:39 Our final rounded answer . Let's move on to number
02:42 two where we have 455 1000th . Let's round this
02:48 number to the 100th place . Underline the digits in
02:52 the hundreds place so that five let's look to the
02:56 right so we have a five in the place to
03:00 the right so five or more . We round up
03:03 four or less we keep the digit the same .
03:06 Well that's five or more . So we round up
03:10 So we round two 46/100 and we cut that off
03:17 after the rounded place . So after the 100th place
03:21 and our final rounded answer 46/100 . Now before starting
03:27 number three , I do want to mention that there
03:29 are sayings to help you remember the rounding rules for
03:33 example , five or more , raise the score four
03:38 or less , let it rest . Let's move on
03:41 to number three where we have 27 7392 10/1000 .
03:49 Let's round this one to the 1000th place . So
03:53 this nine right here , Look to the right ,
03:57 we have a two so five or more or four
04:00 or less . Well that's four or less . So
04:03 we keep that nine the same here and our final
04:08 rounded answer 27 and 739000s . Moving on to number
04:18 four , we're going to round number four to the
04:20 100th place . So the six , let's look to
04:24 the right , we have a three , five or
04:27 more or four or less . Well that's four or
04:30 less . So we stay the same And we round
04:33 two 26 100th . Let's move on to number five
04:41 where we have three and 8/10 . So we're going
04:45 to round this one to the ones place . This
04:48 is also known as rounding to the nearest whole number
04:52 . So we're seeing is this closer to three or
04:56 is it closer to four ? Let's look to the
04:59 right And we have an eight . So 8 is
05:03 five or more . So we round up three and
05:06 8/10 rounds to four . Now , if you were
05:11 to put four decimal zero , you change that 10th
05:15 place to a zero . This would still be correct
05:18 . These are equal . But like we talked about
05:21 earlier you can cut decimals off after the rounded place
05:25 because Zeros to the right of the decimal do not
05:28 change the value . Lastly let's move on to number
05:31 six where we have a very long decimal and we're
05:34 going to round this one to the 10th place .
05:37 So let's underline the digit in the 10th . This
05:41 too . Look to the right we have a nine
05:44 . So is that five or more or four or
05:47 less ? While nine is more than five . So
05:49 we round up so I will come below here so
05:54 I have enough room . This is going to round
05:56 up to one and 3/10 cut off after the 10th
06:02 place . Right after the rounded place Again . Final
06:05 rounded answer one and 3/10 . So there you have
06:09 it . There's how you round decimals . I hope
06:12 that helped . Thanks so much for watching until next
06:16 time . Peace . Mhm Yeah . Yeah .
