00:09 | Have you ever gotten up in the middle of the
00:11 | night to use the bathroom and stumble out of bed
00:13 | and then smash . And then after that , well
00:16 | that has happened to me . In fact , just
00:19 | last night , got up , went to get some
00:21 | water and kick something really hard and now my toe
00:24 | hurts . So bear with me . But if you're
00:26 | at all like me having this happened to you likely
00:28 | brought a few things to your mind , like one
00:31 | turning on the lights would probably have been a good
00:33 | idea to what did I trip over and three who
00:37 | left it there ? The second of these questions is
00:39 | pretty important because it's a question that's the essence of
00:42 | so much science and that is what is this thing
00:47 | ? Yeah . No matter what that thing is ,
00:52 | I can tell you that it's made up of matter
00:54 | and all Matter has properties , specific characteristics that separate
00:58 | it from other kinds of matter . If you remember
01:00 | from the last episode , properties are things we can
01:02 | observe and measure things like an objects length with height
01:06 | and volume . But how can we use these kinds
01:08 | of properties to identify an object ? I am so
01:12 | glad you asked because we're going to do a little
01:14 | investigation together . Mm . So today we're going to
01:20 | solve the mystery of what did Sabrina trip over in
01:23 | the middle of the night . And we'll do this
01:25 | by examining the properties of said mystery object which I
01:29 | happen to have right here hidden under the cloth .
01:31 | But before we start our investigation , did you know
01:34 | that there are different kinds of units that can be
01:36 | used to measure things You can measure in feet or
01:39 | pounds or gallons if you wanted . I guess you
01:41 | could also measure in jelly beans but that would take
01:44 | a long time . So we'll just go ahead and
01:47 | use the international standard units , also known as the
01:51 | metric system . You might know these units as meters
01:54 | , grams and leaders . And the markings on my
01:56 | measuring tape here , divide a meter into 100 smaller
01:59 | pieces of equal size . Each of these is a
02:02 | centimeter 1/100 of a meter . Okay , now ,
02:04 | back to this mystery object . Feeling around . It's
02:07 | got nice straight sides and two sides are larger than
02:10 | the other two . That means we're dealing with a
02:12 | rectangle here . Now let's give those sides of measure
02:15 | looks like it's about 23 cm wide , about 30
02:18 | cm tall and about five cm high . So we
02:21 | have some measurements . That's a good start . But
02:24 | it's not enough to tell us what this thing is
02:26 | . So let's measure another property . It's mass to
02:29 | do this . We need a different tool , a
02:31 | scale and we'll use a different unit to . In
02:34 | the metric system . The unit of mass is called
02:36 | a gram . A paperclip has a mass of about
02:38 | a gram , whatever this is , it's kind of
02:40 | heavy . It's almost 3000 g . So here we
02:43 | have an object that is pretty heavy , hard ,
02:45 | smooth and rectangular . Let's see what other objects do
02:49 | I know of that fit that description . Tennis racket
02:51 | , nope . It's not my socks or my stuffed
02:54 | panda . And we've already ruled out my tablet .
02:57 | Oh , I know it's my science book . I
02:59 | was doing a little reading last night and put it
03:01 | on the floor before I turned the lights out .
03:07 | So we've been able to identify a mystery object by
03:10 | observing and measuring its properties . We used units in
03:13 | the metric system to put values on properties such as
03:16 | grams for mass and centimeters for length , width and
03:19 | height . And those numbers gave us enough clues to
03:22 | solve the mystery of what I kicked in the dark
03:24 | . So remember when it comes to measuring , think
03:26 | metric , and when it comes to identifying objects ,
03:29 | take a tip from me , avoid identifying them with
03:32 | your toe . |
