00:00 Welcome to another session of math license . We're doing
00:04 a long division today . Yea , we're transforming a
00:08 fraction into a long division . This shows up the
00:12 up on the exam . So often it's very important
00:15 you get this one handled what to do first .
00:18 We got to set it up over the years .
00:20 I have a really good analogy for you . The
00:23 number on top goes inside the house , that the
00:25 number of cookies you have , the number on the
00:27 bottom is where your slippers are and they go outside
00:30 the house that the number of people you have right
00:33 , pretty easy to set up . Next question is
00:36 where do we put the numbers ? Like where is
00:39 the first digit of the answer goal ? Does it
00:43 go right on top of the tool ? I'm often
00:46 asked this question , there's a really , really easy
00:49 way to find out . The answer is no ,
00:52 because the number of people outside three is bigger than
00:56 the number of cookies you have inside looking at .
00:58 That's why you have to go move one more digit
01:02 over Alignment is very important . Now , here we
01:05 have three is less than 20 , so I have
01:08 20 cookies inside and three people outside . This is
01:11 why the answer is yes . Okay , now we
01:14 got that out of the way . Next I want
01:16 you to split your paper in half . You're going
01:19 to do all the thinking and the scratch paper on
01:21 the right hand side and the left hand side is
01:24 where you're going to do the work Question you need
01:27 to ask is how many times does three go into
01:29 20 without going over that ? Without going over part
01:33 is very important because you don't want to not be
01:36 a good host . Right ? How do we find
01:39 out how many times three basically can cover 20 ?
01:43 Well three times one is three , so on ,
01:46 so forth , three times five is 15 . You
01:48 can see I'm using multiplication table to figure that out
01:52 . Remember I said it without going over since three
01:55 times 20 Uh seven is 21 . That's going over
01:58 . That's why three times six is the answer I'm
02:01 looking for . So the answer is six . Now
02:03 , where do I put the six ? And what
02:05 do I do with 18 ? So many digits ?
02:08 Worry not , I have a really easy way for
02:10 you to do first one . We're gonna put a
02:13 six right on top of the digit zero . Remember
02:17 its not on top of the two because we already
02:19 said it , that doesn't cover right . three times
02:21 6 . On the outside you do the multiplication and
02:24 then you put the answer back inside the house ,
02:28 white back into the inside the house again . You're
02:31 gonna do subtraction . So three times six . Outside
02:34 equal 18 , 18 goes right under the 20 .
02:37 Make sure alignment is precise . Division is hard because
02:43 alignment . Most kids don't take care of it .
02:46 20-18 is too . What do we do now ?
02:50 Right , worry not . You've already done the hard
02:52 part now . We just do rinse and repeat before
02:55 we can do rinse and repeat . We need to
02:57 figure out since two can't cover three , right ?
03:03 Because we need to find the second digit to the
03:05 number for the second , answer . For the second
03:08 digit for the second answer . Try again . 2nd
03:12 , digital for the answer . There we go .
03:14 Since three is bigger than two , we need to
03:16 go basically borrow a friend that's seven . We're going
03:21 to bring it down . So our tool becomes 27
03:24 a magic friend . Okay , so from here it's
03:29 really downhill . Rinse and repeat . How many times
03:32 does three goes into 27 without going over ? You
03:36 can match 27 but you can't go over . Right
03:38 . How do we do that ? Remember from last
03:41 step , rinse and repeat it . We're gonna use
03:44 drum beat . Yeah , multiplication tables . So let's
03:49 put this out Next time . How many times has
03:51 three going to 27 without going over ? You can
03:55 match it again . Right , I repeat again .
03:58 You can match it , we can go over .
03:59 So if your parents teaching your child at this point
04:03 your child gets little fidgety , worry not they'll get
04:06 so much better and so much quicker . Um If
04:10 your first time doing this again , worry not it's
04:12 fairly simple multiplication table . Over and over . This
04:15 is how you get good at it . Three times
04:18 8 27 3 times nine is three times 8 ,
04:21 24 . 3 times nine is 27 . So the
04:24 the answer is nine . So how do we do
04:26 , where do we put nine right on the roof
04:29 ? three times 9 . Do the multiplication outside ,
04:31 bring 27 inside the house . And then you're gonna
04:35 do you guessed it ? Subtraction ? Look at that
04:39 . It's a perfect match Just like you and the
04:42 math , right ? So answer is 69 . Do
04:47 the subtraction make sure everything is clean on the left
04:50 hand side , everything on the right is a scratch
04:52 paper . Yeah . Good job .
