00:02 | Hello . This is a little piece designed to show
00:03 | you how to convert between mixed numbers and improper fractions
00:07 | . So here we go . The first thing you
00:10 | want to know is , Okay , what are these
00:12 | things ? Well , look at Mixed numbers . The
00:16 | mixed number is a number that contains both a whole
00:18 | number and a fraction . So here the example of
00:23 | a mixed number Is 3.5 . 3 being the whole
00:26 | number . The fraction being a half . There's a
00:30 | very close relationship between mixed numbers and improper fractions .
00:33 | As you'll see essentially they are the same number .
00:36 | They just look a little bit different . So we're
00:39 | going to change this number here to an improper fraction
00:43 | . There you go . As an improper fraction ,
00:46 | 3.5 is 7/2 or seven hams . Now you can
00:50 | stop and have a look at this for a minute
00:52 | . As you can see the pictures of little pies
00:54 | up there , there's three big pies and half a
00:57 | pie . But if you cut them up , you
00:58 | also have 1234567 halves altogether . So these numbers mean
01:04 | exactly the same thing . Next we're going to look
01:07 | at well without drawing pires , how to convert between
01:10 | these things . So to show you how to do
01:12 | this , we'll look at an example . We already
01:14 | know where 3.5 as a mixed number equals an improper
01:17 | fraction of 7 , 7/2 . So the first thing
01:21 | we do with the mixed number is we get the
01:23 | whole number of which is the three times by the
01:25 | bottom number of the fraction , which is the two
01:28 | . So three times two eagle six . The next
01:31 | thing we do is we get this number and we
01:33 | add it to the top number of the fraction ,
01:34 | so six plus one equals seven . And as you
01:37 | can see this is how we work out the top
01:39 | number of the improper fraction to work at . The
01:43 | bottom number is really , really easy because the bottom
01:45 | number just stays the same From the mixed number to
01:48 | the improper fraction . In this case the bottom number
01:50 | stays as a two . I'll show you another example
01:54 | , two and three quarters will change this into an
01:56 | improper fraction . So the first thing that we do
01:58 | is we times two and the four to get eight
02:02 | . And we add this to the top number of
02:04 | the fraction , which is three , so plus three
02:07 | is 11 . How do we get the bottom number
02:11 | ? Well , it's the same as the one in
02:12 | the mixed number . So the bottom number is four
02:15 | . So the two and 3/4 is a improper fraction
02:19 | is a lemonade . Before That's simple . The next
02:22 | thing we'll look at is changing back from an improper
02:24 | fraction to a mixed number . Example years . Here
02:26 | is 8/5 or eight fits very simple . Like any
02:30 | fraction . If you just read , it says eight
02:32 | divided by five , so eight divided by five equals
02:34 | one With three . As a reminder , It's three
02:38 | . You just put over the bottom number of the
02:40 | fraction , so 3/5 . The answer is one in
02:43 | 3 ft what a number stays exactly the same .
02:47 | So there you go . That's converting between mixed numbers
02:50 | and improper fractions . All right . |
