00:0-1 Welcome to anywhere . Math . I'm Jeff Jacobson .
00:02 And today we're gonna be dividing mixed numbers . Let's
00:05 get started . Yeah . Okay let's get started with
00:25 . Example 12 and 1/4 divided by 3/8 . Now
00:29 dividing with mixed numbers is not a whole lot different
00:32 than dividing with fractions . Uh We already have multiplied
00:37 with mixed numbers . Uh And if you remember the
00:40 first step we did with that is to get rid
00:43 of the mixed numbers . Mixed numbers are kind of
00:45 hard to deal with . So our first step is
00:47 just to make that an improper fraction . So two
00:50 and 1/4 becomes well four times two is eight plus
00:54 , one is nine becomes 9/4 divided by 38 We've
01:01 already done dividing with fractions . And if you haven't
01:03 seen that video , go ahead and watch that .
01:06 A simple way to remember what to do is keep
01:09 change flip divided by a fraction is the same thing
01:14 as multiplied by its reciprocal . So this 9/4 that
01:18 stays 9/4 . I change right , keep that .
01:23 Change the sign to multiplication . And I flipped that
01:26 3/8 to the reciprocal which is 8/3 . And that
01:31 is pretty simple , right ? Always try to simplify
01:34 before you multiply that four becomes a one , it
01:37 becomes a to that becomes a one that becomes a
01:41 three . Multiply straight across and I get 6/1 which
01:46 is six . Okay , let's try another example .
01:51 Okay , example 23 and 56 divided by one and
01:55 two thirds . So now we're dividing with two mixed
01:58 numbers , approach it the same way . I don't
02:02 want to deal with these mixed numbers . So my
02:03 first step is to make them improper fractions three and
02:07 56 Well six times three is 18 plus five is
02:11 23 . So that becomes 23 6 divided by uh
02:17 three times one is three plus two is five .
02:20 That becomes five thirds . Okay now keep change flip
02:25 Remember divided by a fraction same is multiplied by its
02:29 reciprocal . So to 23/6 times three fists . Now
02:37 always try to simplify before I multiply that three becomes
02:41 a one , the six becomes a two , nothing
02:44 there . So I'm going to multiply straight across and
02:47 I get 23/10 . Now at this point I've got
02:54 a mix . Sorry I've got an improper fraction .
02:57 I want to change that back to a mixed number
02:59 . So 10 goes into 23 to hold times and
03:05 10 times two is 20 . So I'm gonna have
03:07 three tents left over . And that is my final
03:13 answer . Three and 56 divided by one and two
03:15 thirds Is two and 3/10 . Here's some to try
03:18 on your own . Alright example three evaluate five in
03:32 1/4 divided by one and 1/8 minus two thirds .
03:36 So this is a little bit more complicated because it's
03:39 not just division . We also have we're subtracting a
03:42 fraction at the end so we have to remember our
03:45 orders of operations . And with division and subtraction ,
03:49 division is going to come first so I gotta do
03:51 this part and then at the end I'm gonna subtract
03:53 two thirds . So again first step let's get rid
03:57 of these mixed numbers and let's make them improper fractions
04:00 five and 1/4 becomes 21 . Force divided by one
04:06 and 1/8 will become 98 and then still have the
04:11 minus two thirds there Now divided by a fraction .
04:15 The same thing is multiplied by its reciprocal . Keep
04:18 21 4th . Change to multiplication and flip that 289
04:25 minus two thirds is still there . Let's simplify before
04:30 we multiply becomes one , that becomes too 21 and
04:35 nine have a common factor of three . So that's
04:39 gonna become seven and that's gonna become three and that's
04:44 all I can do there . So let's multiply those
04:46 before we do my subtraction seven times two is 14/1
04:52 times three is three -2/3 . Now I'm not going
04:58 to change this fraction to back to a mixed number
05:02 because I sell this attract and right now it's really
05:05 nice because they both have a common denominator of three
05:09 . So 14 3rd minus two thirds . I can
05:14 subtract that right now , that becomes 12 3rd which
05:18 is four . Okay , here's some to try on
05:25 your own as always . Thank you so much for
05:37 watching and if you like this video please subscribe .
