00:0-1 good day and welcome to the Tech Math channel .
00:02 What we're going to have to look at today is
00:04 the joy of many , many people they really are
00:07 . A lot of people seem to struggle with this
00:09 particular concept and that's why I'm talking with the head
00:12 on . We're gonna be looking at the joy .
00:14 That is long division . Okay , personally , I'm
00:18 a bit more attention , like a lot of people
00:20 to grab the calculator these days , but really it's
00:22 a great skill to still be able to have .
00:24 I think it's , I still like to actually know
00:26 how things work and that sort of deal . So
00:28 , and some people , they still have to go
00:29 to school and learn how this , that , you
00:32 know , the long division way . So this video
00:35 is really , really , I guess dedicated to you
00:38 guys . So long division now . What long division
00:42 is , where what we're doing is we get a
00:44 great question like this were usually we're getting double two
00:47 digit numbers dividing into another number . So we get
00:51 this sort of thing . The this number here divided
00:55 by 780 divided by 12 . Look at that .
00:59 I didn't leave myself any space at all . There
01:01 we go and make some for myself . So how
01:03 do you go about doing these ? So I'll start
01:06 off on how you do this and there there's I'm
01:10 sort of procrastinating . I'll let you into it okay
01:14 with these . You treat them pretty much like you
01:16 treat a lot of other divisions , but there's a
01:18 couple of slight little differences . So I think the
01:21 easiest way is to launch into them . So first
01:24 off , how many times does 12 go into seven
01:26 ? While it doesn't I'll leave a blank that I
01:29 can put a zero there . So I carry this
01:31 seven across and I get 78 . How many times
01:34 ? It's 12 . Going to 78 ? Yeah ,
01:36 you should be . Hopefully . All right with the
01:38 12 times table . If you're not there you go
01:41 . But 6:12-72 . So Yeah . Through six .
01:47 Okay . And this six left over . Okay .
01:52 Yeah . What I do and this is where long
01:54 division's a little bit funny Is you put the 70
02:00 two down here And you would usually take it away
02:05 78 , take away 72 And you get this and
02:08 through 60 . Okay . It's the same answer I
02:10 got here . Okay . Often all the subtraction thing
02:13 is here is it's working at what you now have
02:15 left with a remainder . Okay . It's exactly like
02:17 every other bit of division you've ever done . We've
02:20 used these sort of things they just now instead of
02:23 because the numbers get bigger , they don't try to
02:25 ride or everything in here . They start trying to
02:27 write down here instead . So how many times 12
02:31 , it goes in five times . All right now
02:35 . That was a pretty easy example for that .
02:37 But I'm going to get into a nice harder one
02:39 now . Okay , and say something like this .
02:43 So I get something Where I have 19 And I'm
02:48 going to be dividing that into 20,418 . I'll caution
02:54 you by the way , I'm not going to this
02:57 video completely blind . I have done this question already
03:00 . There is a remainder with this and I'll show
03:02 you a couple of things that you might end up
03:04 doing with the remainder . Okay , so first off
03:07 19 into 20 for now , you're going to see
03:11 I'm straight away , sort of skipping the Taino .
03:12 The 19 is not going to go in there ,
03:13 so I'm not bothering with it 1920 for now it
03:16 goes one time . Okay , so what I do
03:21 here is I Put the 19 down here And I'm
03:26 going to take it away from the 24 . So
03:28 19 take away 24 is five and then I moved
03:32 this stuff down . Okay . The 18 just comes
03:37 down there . All right . So I'm left with
03:39 518 . Okay . It's another way I could have
03:42 actually put the fire up . Er Okay but it
03:45 begins to look a little bit more squashed . Okay
03:47 so that's all long division is it's basically making and
03:50 giving you a little bit more space . All right
03:54 so 19 now into 518 . Yeah it's a horrible
03:59 thing . Okay trying to get your 19 times table
04:02 for me . The little trick is 19 is very
04:04 close to 20 . So how many times 20 Going
04:07 to 51 ? Well around about twice . Okay .
04:11 So no I mean most likely the only around about
04:13 twice . It's not a hard and fast rule .
04:15 And the next question I get well we're get a
04:17 bit more complicated so I'll run through what they do
04:19 then . So it goes roughly twice and 2019 .
04:27 Give me the answer of 2 8 - 9 18
04:33 . Okay so And it carried the 112 is too
04:38 so 38 . Okay . Now if I take 38
04:44 from my question here I'm now going to get the
04:48 answer of okay remember we're not dealing with this one
04:55 here . Okay want Okay well we can't do that
04:58 so I had to borrow one from here . This
05:01 is going to put a one there . So 11
05:02 take eight is 3 four Take 3 is one And
05:06 this eight now Moves Down 138 . Okay Now again
05:15 roughly how many 20's do we get in this one
05:18 here ? Well , roughly ? About seven . Okay
05:22 , that's 77 27 to 14 . And so 7
05:27 20 . 140 which is above this because 19 I
05:31 think we should actually be able to cover it with
05:33 seven of them . So seven times 98 Put the
05:36 seven up here . seven times 197 , carry the
05:41 617 and seven plus six is 13 . So 138
05:47 take away 33 run out of room . The answer
05:51 is five . So what do I do with this
05:52 five ? I'm not gonna be able to sit in
05:53 19 into it . Now now there's a couple of
05:56 things some teachers are going to get you to write
05:58 down as remain to five and you just put down
06:00 a little up here , you might put down remain
06:02 to five personally , I'm a bit of a fan
06:05 of actually doing it a little bit differently , I'm
06:07 a bit of a fan of actually getting the five
06:09 And you put that over as a fraction over 19
06:13 . So the answer is this number entirely ? 127
06:18 and 5/19 . Yeah , I know it's a very
06:22 , very messy way of doing something which feels like
06:25 it should be a lot easier . Okay , to
06:28 one further example here , okay , and I want
06:34 to with this , I want to actually Give you
06:38 a little hint of what I do and I think
06:39 I might even have to zoom out to do this
06:41 . Okay , I'll give myself a bit more space
06:43 so , so I'll give you this question here .
06:45 This is going to be some horrendous looking question here
06:48 . 20 , for how many times does it go
06:52 into ? 1845 . Look , I see that it
07:00 doesn't really overly make me that happy either , but
07:03 I'll show you a little trick what I do and
07:05 this is what I actually did when I was working
07:06 at the answer to this . Previously I started actually
07:10 going through because I start going to go , how
07:12 many ? 24 ? I'm thinking straight away , this
07:15 is going to be messy . So what I do
07:17 is I would go through and this can be ,
07:19 take a little bit of time , but Once I
07:22 was 24 , This is one times 24 , two
07:27 times 24 is 48 three times 24 . Well there's
07:35 one plus two equals three . 4-plus 8 is to
07:39 carry the one four plus . That is six plus
07:44 , that is 72 uh huh With a 4 ,
07:49 4 times 24 and is going up by 20 for
07:51 each time . Okay , the answer is 96 5
07:54 times 24 is going to be 126 times 20 for
08:00 1 40 for seven times 20 for 1 68 .
08:05 8 times 24 . Okay , so 1 70 to
08:09 1 92 and nine times 24 Is going to be
08:13 24 more , which is going to be a six
08:15 there 23 236 . Hopefully haven't made a little boo
08:21 there . 1 . 44 . 68 . 1 92
08:26 . 2 36 . I think I've got a little
08:29 bit too high here . In fact , I have
08:31 . Okay , there you go . Even even math
08:34 nerds make mistakes , right ? Sometimes . All right
08:37 . So First off , where do we fall into
08:41 here ? Okay , so 20 for you can't go
08:44 into one . It can't go into 18 . So
08:46 how many times is it going to ? 184 ?
08:49 You're going to see ? It falls in at this
08:52 particular point ? It goes in seven times . Okay
08:56 , so seven times 24 is 168 and I'm going
09:01 to take this away . All right . 168 and
09:04 68 notice this number here is going to come down
09:07 and get carried down there . So I'm gonna put
09:09 the five straight there . Uh and four take a
09:13 look . Can't do . So I'm going to grab
09:14 one from here . 14 take ages . 67 take
09:18 six is 11 take one is nothing . So I'll
09:22 leave that alone . Okay ? So 165 . Now
09:26 , divided by 24 . Whether we follow until we
09:29 fall into this partner Case , We Got six .
09:33 Okay . All right . So Six times 24 is
09:39 144 . 44 . So five take four is 1684
09:46 is two and one take one is nothing . So
09:48 we've got 21 now because 21 is less than 24
09:51 we can't divide this any further . Now . However
09:55 what we might write this again we can remain at
09:57 21 but I'm a big fan of writing 21/24 .
10:02 Okay . But obviously if you're doing maths at school
10:05 go with whatever your maths teacher prefers . But I
10:08 do prefer this . So that's your answer there ,
10:10 76 and 21 remainder or 21/24 I think . Really
10:16 I really do recommend it drawing this sort of thing
10:18 up . Okay . Anyway I hope you do really
10:22 , really well with those . We'll see next time
00:0-1 .
