00:0-1 Welcome to the Tech mouth channel . This video is
00:02 looking at mixed numbers and improper fraction . So I'll
00:05 quickly go over there . Just a recap of what
00:07 mixed numbers and improper fractions are . So mixed number
00:10 is a number which is made up of both .
00:12 A whole number part and a fraction part . So
00:16 for example , we could have a number like one
00:18 and three quarters . Okay . It's got this whole
00:22 number and this fraction part , hence it's called a
00:24 mixed number . An improper fraction is a fraction ,
00:28 such as the following are so seven out of four
00:32 . It has a numerator which is bigger than the
00:35 denominator . The top number of this fraction is bigger
00:38 than the bottom number and these guys are related to
00:40 one another . And you can change between these guys
00:43 . Uh , quite often if you have a mixed
00:45 number , it's quite handy to change it across to
00:47 an improper fraction just when you want to do calculations
00:50 with it , but then you maybe want to change
00:51 it back . So a greater understanding of what the
00:54 numbers are actually doing . Okay , so let me
00:57 give you an example of what I mean by how
00:59 these guys can be equivalent to how they are equivalent
01:02 to one another . Um So for instance if I
01:05 was to draw one and three quarters , I would
01:07 draw two parts here , but I'm going to break
01:09 them up into quarters . Okay ? So as you
01:11 can see here , we've got three quarters showed in
01:13 here , so we have one and three quarters ,
01:16 so this is representing one and three quarters pretty well
01:18 . But you also may be able to notice ,
01:20 is this how many quarters altogether as shaded in ?
01:23 And we have 1234567 So we have seven quarters .
01:32 So these are pretty much just a different way of
01:35 saying exactly the same thing . So what we're gonna
01:38 be looking for is a nice easy way of changing
01:40 between these and this is that if you want to
01:43 change from a mixed number here across to an improper
01:46 fraction , the easiest way is you can look at
01:48 and say , okay , we have one group of
01:50 four here . One group of force , this is
01:52 one times four to this . We're going to add
01:57 these three parts here , so one group of four
01:59 , which is is four plus these three here ,
02:01 one times four which is four plus three is equal
02:04 to seven . We get the seven and we just
02:06 place it over the same denominator . What about if
02:10 we were trying to change from the improper fraction across
02:13 to the mixed number ? Well , this is pretty
02:14 simple . This line here . This just means divided
02:19 by the seven , divided by four is 1 With
02:22 three left over . So one And then you put
02:25 the three out of the denominator . So let's have
02:28 a look at that without the pictures here to say
02:30 you wanted to put 11 Over five as a mixed
02:34 number at the moment it's an improper fraction . How
02:36 would you go about doing that ? Once again ?
02:39 This means 11 divided by five . So how many
02:42 fives are at 11 ? You can say okay well
02:44 there's two . How many remainder ? There is a
02:46 one remainder That one reminder we put over this Denominator
02:51 here so this becomes two and 1/5 . And that's
02:54 as easy as it is . Okay . What about
02:57 we give an example where we go from a mixed
03:00 number across to an improper fraction and then I'll give
03:04 you a few examples to do . So what about
03:06 we have a look at side . We wanted to
03:07 change two and 1 3rd across to and improper fraction
03:13 . How would you do that ? So the easiest
03:16 way is you can think about this and you can
03:17 say , okay , we've got to we're going to
03:19 be dealing with thirds here . I'll draw this up
03:20 . Okay , We have 123456 These are the whole
03:24 bits here . We have seven . Okay , So
03:26 this is going to be seven thirds . But what
03:28 you could also think about with this is we could
03:29 go , okay , two times three . This is
03:31 two times three here , which is equal to six
03:34 . So we're going to multiply these guys and we're
03:37 going to add this final one at the end .
03:38 So two times three is six plus one . We
03:41 have seven And then denominator stays the same . So
03:45 this becomes seven out of three . All right .
03:49 What about a few examples for you to do so
03:51 , changes across to their equivalent form while they're a
03:53 mixed number . An improper fraction . What about we
03:56 do for and to fitz And change it into the
04:01 improper fraction . What about 16 out of 3 ?
04:06 And we'll change it into the next number . And
04:08 what about uh nine and 2/3 . All right .
04:15 These are really simple . Right ? So , how
04:17 do we do this to start off ? If you
04:18 don't have to draw these out , you're just going
04:20 to go four times five because there's four groups of
04:23 five plus two . So four times five is 20
04:26 plus two is 22 . And the number on the
04:29 bottom is going to be this denominator 22/5 , 16
04:35 , divided by 3 . 16 , divided by three
04:37 is equal to five . And there's one left over
04:41 . And we just put that over the denominator .
04:44 Okay , now we're gonna change this mixed number here
04:47 into its improper fraction . So nine times three is
04:50 equal to 27 plus two is equal to 29 .
04:55 And we just put the denominator on the bottom .
04:57 Anyway . We're gonna be using these ideas later on
05:00 when we're adding fractions and multiple infractions . So hopefully
05:02 you got that under your belt . Thank you for
05:04 watching . We'll see you next time .
