00:00 Hi everyone . I'm jennifer from english with jennifer .
00:04 Do you know what a love hate relationship is ?
00:07 It's when you love something part of the time and
00:10 you hate it all the other times . I think
00:14 many students have a love hate relationship with grammar .
00:17 We know it's a good thing , but it makes
00:20 us feel very frustrated sometimes . Right ? Well ,
00:24 the solution is to study a little bit of grammar
00:27 at a time . Don't try to overload your brain
00:30 with too many rules and patterns . That's why in
00:34 this lesson we're going to look at only three verbs
00:37 and their prepositions they take . The list is short
00:40 enough to study and practice all in one day .
00:44 Remember to subscribe to my channel and then we can
00:47 study another topic on another day . Mm Let's start
00:58 with the verb talk . It's something we do every
01:00 day . Right ? When we get together with friends
01:04 , we have conversations used talk about to name the
01:10 topic of the conversation . For example , what were
01:14 you and Carlos talking about ? Marina doesn't like to
01:18 talk about her childhood use talk with when both people
01:25 or all people are speaking and contributing to the conversation
01:30 . For example , I was talking with my classmates
01:33 the other day about different health care systems . I
01:38 saw you talking with Greg . I didn't know you
01:40 two were friends . Use talk to when one person
01:48 is giving a message or information to another . For
01:52 example , the teacher talked to the class about the
01:55 upcoming test . We can also use talk to when
02:01 someone is in trouble meaning they did something bad .
02:05 For example , the teacher asked Ryan to stay after
02:09 class so she could talk to him . The teacher
02:12 talked to Ryan about the test . He failed and
02:18 we can use talk to when someone needs information or
02:22 advice . You should talk to a doctor about the
02:25 headaches you've been having . Finally we use talkin for
02:33 the manner in which we speak in the library .
02:36 We talkin quiet voices . You shouldn't talk to anyone
02:43 in a rude way or in a rude tone .
02:49 So let's put these patterns into practice . Give some
02:53 thought to these questions . What do old friends talk
02:59 about after not seeing each other for many years ?
03:06 Do you like talking with friends over the phone or
03:09 in person ? Who can you talk to when you
03:14 have a problem ? Is it rude to talk in
03:20 another language so that others around you don't understand ?
03:27 Next let's look at the verb compare compared to the
03:31 last one . This one is a little easier .
03:34 We have two possibilities compared to and compare with some
03:41 sources say that compared to is preferred when we see
03:45 only similarities and compare with is for when we see
03:49 both similarities and differences , especially those differences . But
03:55 again , I'll tell you , it often doesn't matter
03:59 . The phrase compared to is more common than compared
04:03 with an american english , but both are acceptable compared
04:10 to me . You're like an olympic swimmer . I
04:12 can barely swim compared with other sports . Hockey requires
04:19 an extremely high level of coordination and balance because the
04:23 game is played on ice . However we use compared
04:31 to when we want to make a direct comparison meaning
04:35 we're saying that two things or two people are alike
04:40 . Hector wrote Julia a poem and he compared her
04:44 eyes to the stars in the sky . Some leaders
04:50 today like to compare themselves to great leaders of the
04:53 past such as Gandhi , Abraham , Lincoln and Winston
04:57 Churchill . Again , let's pause for some practice .
05:04 Can you answer these questions ? Have you ever lived
05:08 in two different places ? Different houses , cities or
05:12 countries ? How do those two places compare to each
05:16 other compared to other members of your family ? Are
05:24 you more introverted or extroverted ? Alright , last verb
05:33 provide when you provide something you give it or make
05:38 it available . Schools provide an education , hospitals provide
05:44 medical care . Companies provide job opportunities . We can
05:52 provide someone with something . It's about giving something needed
05:59 . Public schools provide Children with a basic education .
06:05 Hotels provide guests with soap , towels and other basic
06:10 necessities . We can also provide something for someone or
06:17 to someone . This is about making something available if
06:22 people want it , they can use it . Airports
06:27 provide special services for those in wheelchairs . Some airports
06:34 also provide play areas for small Children . Local governments
06:42 should provide extreme weather warnings to the public . And
06:48 those three examples . My choices were guided by the
06:52 idea that services or facilities are designed for people and
06:58 information is given to people . Here's a final set
07:06 of questions for practice on a scale of 1-10 with
07:10 10 being the highest . How would you rate the
07:13 quality of the education your elementary school provided you with
07:21 name something ? A hospital should provide for all patients
07:28 . Can you remember all the patterns we studied ?
07:32 I'll provide you with the review list and some tips
07:37 . Use talk about to name the topic of conversation
07:42 . Use talk with to explain who contributed to the
07:45 conversation . Use talk to when giving information or a
07:51 message when giving or seeking advice or when giving a
07:56 reprimand meaning telling someone that they did something wrong .
08:03 Use talkin for the manner in which you speak with
08:09 compare we can compare one thing or one person to
08:14 another or compare one thing or one person with another
08:22 . We can use the phrase compared to X .
08:24 Y . Is compared with is also okay but it's
08:29 less common . And remember that compare to is our
08:35 only choice for direct comparisons . Finally , use provide
08:42 someone with something when giving things that are needed and
08:46 use provide something for someone or to someone when making
08:51 things available . And yes , sometimes I think there's
08:55 overlap in meaning look and listen for these grammar patterns
09:02 . You'll see them in news articles , you'll hear
09:05 them in podcasts , news reports and movies . I'll
09:10 list some useful tools in the video description to help
