00:0-1 patterns . They are all around us . You can
00:02 see patterns and buildings , patterns are used in clothing
00:06 and design and patterns are everywhere in math . Just
00:11 look at the numbers on this ruler . The lines
00:14 on this ruler . The lines on the paper ,
00:18 you might be wondering , what do patterns do ?
00:21 Well , patterns do the same things over and over
00:24 again . Patterns repeat now . This is super cool
00:30 . Every pattern follows a special rule . The rule
00:34 is how the pattern works . We'll give you an
00:37 example . Look at this pattern , It begins with
00:43 a red rectangle , followed by a yellow rectangle .
00:46 Next is a red rectangle and another yellow rectangle .
00:49 Next is a red rectangle , followed by another yellow
00:53 rectangle . It's doing the same thing over and over
00:57 again . So it is definitely a pattern . What
01:00 special rule does this pattern follow ? Well , rectangles
01:05 alternate between red and yellow . Do you see that
01:09 ? The rule tells us how the pattern works in
01:12 this pattern rectangles alternate between red and yellow . So
01:19 , remember every pattern follows a special rule . The
01:23 rule is how the pattern works . If you figure
01:26 out the rule , you've cracked the patterns code .
01:30 Even if there is a part of the pattern missing
01:33 , you will be able to find it because you
01:35 cracked the code here is the pattern we just showed
01:39 you imagine this spot missing what belongs in this spot
01:43 . Well , let's think of this patterns rule rectangles
01:47 alternate between red and yellow . So what color rectangle
01:51 goes here ? Yeah , a red rectangle . By
01:57 figuring out the rule , we were able to fill
02:00 this spot in the pattern . All right , we
02:05 have another pattern here . Instead of shapes , we
02:08 have numbers in this pattern . The first thing we
02:11 need to do is find out what makes this a
02:14 pattern . Look at each of the numbers and see
02:17 if you can see a pattern . What rule does
02:21 this pattern follow ? Do you know ? Yeah .
02:25 You always add one to get the next number .
02:29 Every number goes up by one each time . That's
02:32 the pattern . Great job . Okay now we are
02:37 going to play a game called , complete the pattern
02:40 . We'll show you a pattern and then you can
02:43 try to crack the code and complete it . Here's
02:48 the first one . You'll notice there are a lot
02:50 of shapes here . So we should probably just look
02:52 at this pattern line by line and see what we
02:56 discover on this first line . We see a green
03:01 circle , a blue square and a green circle .
03:05 It's almost like a blue square sandwich . The second
03:10 line is similar to the first except there are two
03:13 squares in between the green circles instead of just one
03:20 . This third line is just like the second line
03:23 except there are three blue squares in between the green
03:27 circles instead of to notice a pattern . So let's
03:33 complete this pattern . How many blue squares are in
03:37 this fourth line ? Yeah , four . The fourth
03:44 line has four blue squares in between the green circles
03:48 . How can we know that ? Well ? The
03:51 blue squares increase by one . Each line . The
03:55 blue squares in between the green circles keep growing by
03:58 one . Every line . That's how this pattern works
04:02 . Great job . All right , Andy really ?
04:07 He does this every afternoon , it's a pattern for
04:09 him . Every afternoon he dances near the woods .
04:13 We are playing complete the pattern . Andy we don't
04:16 have time for these super cool dance moves . They
04:19 are pretty cool . Okay , they are . Oh
04:23 goodness kevin , I know you dance every afternoon as
04:26 well , that's a pattern for you too . But
04:29 kevin , we really do have to get back to
04:32 our game . Okay , come on . All right
04:36 , if there are no more interruptions . Alright ,
04:40 let's look at this next pattern . Oh goodness ,
04:42 look at this series of creatures , these animals .
04:47 The first is an interesting looking hamster followed by two
04:51 birds . Then there's a hamster and then there's a
04:55 mystery spot that we have to complete and a bird
04:59 and then the hamster and then two birds . That's
05:04 pretty cool . Let's complete this pattern . Just by
05:08 looking at this pattern . What do you think goes
05:11 in this spot ? Yeah , A bird , a
05:16 bird goes here now . How do we know that
05:20 ? A bird goes here ? Well to crack the
05:23 code and figure out the pattern . We have to
05:25 look at the clues . We see a hamster first
05:28 followed by two birds , then another hamster and two
05:32 birds . And it goes on and on . The
05:35 rule for this pattern then , is that a hamster
05:38 is followed by two birds and then the pattern repeats
05:43 mm home . Okay , patterns , repeat and a
05:48 please . Okay the kids are learning please . Alright
05:53 , patterns repeat . I was kind of waiting for
05:56 kevin . Okay , I guess he isn't going to
05:58 interrupt him . Kind of impressed . Oh , never
06:04 mind . Never mind . Apparently I spoke too soon
06:07 . Alright , kevin . We really do have a
06:09 final pattern to look at . Okay , I think
06:14 we're ready . Here is the final pattern for us
06:17 to complete . Is this a pattern with shapes or
06:20 numbers ? Yeah , numbers . We need to figure
06:25 out what the final number is in this pattern .
06:29 Yeah . Look at the different numbers and see what
06:32 pattern you notice . Once you figure out what rule
06:36 these numbers are following , you'll be able to figure
06:38 out this last number . What is this missing number
06:43 in the pattern ? Yep . four . Great job
06:52 . How do we know that ? This missing number
06:54 is the number four . Well , what rule did
06:57 you notice the pattern was following ? Yes . Subtract
07:02 one to get the next number . So the first
07:05 number is nine and the next number is one less
07:08 than 98 Then you subtract one to get seven .
07:12 You subtract one to get six , You subtract one
07:15 to get five , and finally you subtract one from
07:18 five to get our answer . Four . Okay ,
07:22 it's official . You are awesome at patterns . It's
07:25 true , it's true . Yeah , patterns are so
07:29 much fun . When you see a pattern , you
07:31 can try to figure out what rule . It is
07:33 following patterns are all around us , just waiting to
07:38 be discovered . Special . Thanks to our patrons who
07:42 make videos like this possible . If you would like
07:45 to support us and get cool homeschool pop tattoos ,
07:49 click the link below this video or visit home school
07:52 pop dot com . As always , you are awesome
07:55 . We hope to see you next video . Okay
08:00 , what's going on with all this dancing this guy's
08:03 dancing to , he's spinning around at the beach in
08:07 a suit , he's gonna get dizzy . What's with
08:10 this ? This is not going to be a pattern
08:12 for future videos .
