00:01 uh boys and girls today's lesson , We're going to
00:08 start off with quick images . So you need to
00:10 have your Mac notebooks out . Let's date it for
00:13 September 14 . We started quick Image is just the
00:16 beginning of this week . Remember I'm going to show
00:19 it once , five or 10 seconds and I'm gonna
00:23 hide it again . So you need to really visualize
00:26 what you see and draw what you see . I'll
00:30 give you a few seconds . I'll show it again
00:33 . I'll hide it again again . You're going to
00:36 add to your visualization of what you see . Then
00:40 I'll show it a third time and we'll talk about
00:42 it . We'll talk about how we can get it
00:45 to relate to math , math equations and some people
00:49 think we're gonna probably have a different , different ways
00:51 of viewing it . So we'll talk about that too
00:53 . So are your eyes ready ? Hey , here
00:56 we go . First time . Yeah . Let's look
01:10 at it again . Your eyes ready ? I don't
01:13 want , you might have missed it . Mhm ,
01:19 mm hmm . Can you think of an equation that
01:26 might go with this ? How did you know how
01:27 many there were ? Can you circle your three groups
01:32 of six so I can see it even better .
01:35 Yeah . Mhm . Okay , let's see what you
01:41 got . Yeah . Mhm thumbs up . If you
01:47 got it Exactly right items up if you were really
01:51 , really , really close and you were on your
01:54 way . So I know sometimes it takes us a
01:57 little bit longer than the time I can give you
01:59 and folks , let's talk about how many this is
02:03 and how you visualize that with your math , Jose
02:07 , what do you do ? Uh I'll put three
02:11 times six equals 18 . You got three times six
02:14 equals 18 . Can you come up here and circle
02:18 ? Mm . How you visualize three times six equals
02:20 18 please thumbs up if that's what you saw .
02:24 Ah So we've got some thinkers that are all thinking
02:28 the same . Yeah . Now he's showing us what
02:35 he's showing us . What's he showing us Ethan .
02:40 Say it again , please ? Groups of three groups
02:44 of three . And how many groups of three did
02:46 he get six ? Six ? Good job . Thanks
02:49 . Anybody see it another way ? Yeah , anybody
02:53 see it another way . Uh Well how do you
02:56 see it ? Uh Deandra nine times 29 times two
03:02 . And what did you get for ? Nine times
03:03 two , 18 . 9 times two equals 18 .
03:06 Can you come up and show it ? Please use
03:09 it a different color marker so you can see it
03:12 . Did anybody think like Deandra ? Yeah . Yeah
03:25 . The teacher . Okay . Yeah . Yeah .
03:30 Okay . I see how you connected it . nine
03:33 groups of two . Did anybody do the community property
03:37 of that one ? Because I really didn't think nine
03:39 groups of two . I thought of it as .
03:43 Yeah . What's The Community That ? nine Times 2
03:46 . Yeah . Yeah . Yeah . Say it again
03:49 two times two times nine . And I'll show you
03:52 what I did . You might think of it like
03:53 that two times 92 groups of nine come up .
03:56 Jacob and show us how you saw that way .
03:58 We know that these mean the same thing . We've
04:02 already talked about that . But circling and they might
04:05 show it in a different way . Show me your
04:07 two groups of nine . Yeah . Okay . Mhm
04:14 . Mhm . Good job . Good job . Another
04:19 way . Got another marker . We can do it
04:22 one more way and then we're gonna go on with
04:24 our math lesson for the day another way . Uh
04:27 What you get mm care is going to show us
04:32 what she's doing . Oh good . So you and
04:50 Jose were doing the community of each other . The
04:53 flip flops is what ? Kindergartners column . Right ?
04:55 But not in fourth grade . So a lot of
04:57 a solid as looking at groups up as groups up
05:02 . If I was gonna put and this is just
05:03 going to extend a little bit . If I was
05:05 gonna put all of these together . He's still big
05:12 . Well mm grab the little eraser out . Uh
05:19 huh . Does that look big ? Huh ? That's
05:27 big . It's quicker if I was going to put
05:30 all of these together and make , what am I
05:33 making ? If I put all of my rows and
05:35 columns and fit them together , what am I making
05:38 Trip ? What am I making ? Alright . An
05:41 array . What would the dimensions be if I was
05:43 going to slide them altogether ? 6x3 . Good job
05:47 . Come and show us . Yeah . Mhm .
05:58 And then label where you're six would go . Good
06:01 job . Cool , cool beans . That's the new
06:06 work . Cool beans . Good job . Good job
06:08 on quick images . We're gonna do those . Why
06:10 are we doing them ? We're gonna keep doing them
06:12 . Why ? What's it gonna help us do ?
06:16 Especially us that still are trying to memorize some things
06:19 . What's going to help us do ? Yeah .
06:24 Matthew sometimes it can help us um count battle .
06:31 Count faster and what's counting has to do with a
06:36 raise . Um It can help you long time .
06:40 Exactly . Very good . Exactly . All right .
06:44 You can keep your notebooks open because you're probably gonna
06:46 need them . But I need your pencils down and
06:48 all eyes up here on our smart board . We're
06:52 gonna do it . Think pair share . We're gonna
06:55 do a lesson today . It's called multiple . Okay
06:58 . Tive comparisons . I want you to think .
07:04 What does that mean ? And I mean when you
07:07 give you a little bit of hint , you all
07:09 know back here on our cafe menu . How to
07:13 figure out what words are . You've given me these
07:16 ideas how to figure out what they mean . We've
07:21 done nifty thrifty 50 , talked about prefixes and root
07:26 and base words and suffixes . Use your schema in
07:31 reading . Help you figure out those math words .
07:34 Think . Mhm . Mhm . What does multiplication comparisons
07:44 mean ? Mhm . You're thinking pair up with your
07:52 partners sitting around , you talk about it . What
07:55 do you think it means multiplication And uh check about
08:01 multiplication . And then compare compare . We compare .
08:06 The multiplication is to get multiple multiply . What about
08:10 comparison comparison ? What's the word in there ? Like
08:15 that is to say not ? What do you think
08:20 ? What did you say that ? She agreed with
08:23 said multiplication paris . I know it's hard . It's
08:29 really like you both get them like steady . For
08:31 each for each one you like night steady . So
08:36 what steady me When you're talking about multiplication comparison um
08:41 Seven times three and three times seven . Okay so
08:44 you think it kind of means flip flops And you
08:47 said that the community property ? I love the way
08:49 you always try to give examples to help me understand
08:51 . That helps me . Like you can still get
08:53 to compare them . Yeah and you're comparing those two
08:56 ? Okay what do you think ? It's probably like
08:59 I mean like it could be a different ring ,
09:03 a different array . So you're going to compare one
09:06 array to a totally different array ? Okay . Okay
09:15 . Does anybody want to share their thoughts ? Their
09:17 ideas chiana me and my partner shares that watch application
09:25 compare multiplication of comparison multiple kate of comparison . We
09:32 think it means that you compare Want one multiple case
09:38 Ethan . You can help her out if she wants
09:40 your help . We believe that um mm that means
09:46 that we that you compare one multiplication equation with another
09:50 . Okay okay that's a good idea . Good thinking
09:56 . What do you think ? I think that you
09:59 have to put two numbers together and see what are
10:01 equal To any two numbers . no and you said
10:07 see what it equals . Well let me rephrase my
10:09 question . What are you going to do with those
10:10 two numbers when you put them together ? You gotta
10:13 tell me what put together means . Yeah so we
10:17 can do a lot to numbers . Think of your
10:20 word . Yeah think of the work . Do you
10:25 see any words ? Small words that jump out at
10:29 you in that big long word multiple multiplication of comparison
10:35 compare . Okay but you were talking about doing something
10:40 to two numbers . Do you see another word out
10:42 there ? That might help you decide what you're gonna
10:44 do to those two numbers ? Besides compare them ,
10:48 share , share them . What are you thinking ?
10:51 Trent . You have your hand in the back ?
10:53 I was thinking that it might you might have to
10:57 have two numbers and you have to find the multiples
11:01 . Okay . And why do you say to numbers
11:03 with multiples ? What do you do multiples ? Because
11:06 it's as multiple ? So you're you're chunking you're seeing
11:10 a little word in that big long word . That's
11:12 one of the things to be said about accuracy .
11:14 That's one of the things we're learning about 50 ,
11:15 50 , 50 . Um De janeiro . Uh You
11:22 take two different months of for months of multiplication equations
11:29 and see if they could are saying okay and I'll
11:33 have time for one more and then we're gonna go
11:35 on and we're gonna see if what we were thinking
11:38 is really what we're going to be doing with multiplication
11:41 comparisons . One more . Um How about Olivia ?
11:48 Oh sure . Multiply means multiplying by numbers . So
11:53 you think multiplication means multiplying numbers ? Okay . We're
11:57 going to compare them . Sure . Okay . We'll
12:00 track . All right . Let's focus back . We've
12:05 done I think pair share and I want to show
12:07 you a problem that it is an example of multiplication
12:15 of comparison . And it sounds like this . Deandra
12:21 picked seven apples . Reese picked four times as many
12:27 apples . How many apples did he pick before I
12:33 even start to think about it . Like math .
12:36 I think about it . Like reading were the characters
12:39 in our story ? Who are the characters in our
12:43 story ? Kayleigh Deandra and Tianjin Reese . What are
12:53 T . Andhra and Reese doing Shayla at the count
13:02 of apple's ? Uh They're counting apples . Do you
13:05 think they might eat them ? What can you infer
13:08 they might do with them ? Besides eat them ?
13:11 Like this is done and yeah . Okay . Mike
13:18 plant the seeds out of them . Regular apple school
13:20 . All right . What is uh your problem ?
13:24 Because in math the story problem becomes your problem .
13:29 So what do we need to figure out here ,
13:37 Alex ? Do we need to figure out how many
13:41 apples they have ? Do you need me to reread
13:46 it for you ? Okay . It says Tianjin picked
13:50 seven apples . Reese picked four times as many as
13:54 as many as apples . How many apples did he
13:57 pick ? So who are we looking to see ?
14:01 We're looking for weeks . We're looking for racist .
14:03 Apple's . Good job . Good , good , good
14:05 , good job . All right , hands down .
14:09 I'm starting to learn how to use the smart board
14:11 . You're gonna think this is pretty cool . Your
14:13 third grade teacher may have already showed it to you
14:15 . I'm going to show you the apples that Deandra
14:19 picks . Okay you can count with me 12 Oh
14:34 what's to say ? Exactly . I'm gonna make this
14:38 page just a little bit longer . Alright . Seven
14:41 apples . T . Andres . You have fun picking
14:43 your apples . I like apple . You like apple
14:45 school . All right . Reese comes along and he
14:49 the story says he picked how many more or how
14:53 many times more ? Four times . Who wants to
14:57 show me the one time , the one time ,
15:02 one time as many as Reese Jacob . All you
15:06 gotta do is your apples are gonna be red ,
15:09 Reese 200 years of yellow . So you're gonna show
15:12 me one times as many and this is a well
15:16 we'll see what happens . Floor . Mhm . Three
15:24 why ? Good job are you done Good job that
15:35 four step back because we're in the thing this shows
15:39 that one times as many as who ? T .
15:44 Andhra that's one . Okay , alright trends ready .
15:49 Jacob said he's ready so J trend you're going to
15:52 show us two times as many but you've got to
15:56 use what Jacob already has on there . Okay keep
15:59 the richard , do your stuff , do your thing
16:01 , do your thing . Uh Great . Oh oh
16:15 just click off . There you go . She says
16:19 hi seven fish . He said yeah tell me why
16:31 I should show me two times as many we can
16:34 put Show me two times as many seven Apples .
16:39 You did seven apples . Is that a group of
16:42 seven apples ? It's not a group . You tell
16:48 me you think it is a group ? Why is
16:51 it considered to be a group ? Because I put
16:54 seven apples and you put on , we could put
16:56 a circle , Did Jacob make a group of seven
17:00 apples ? And what did I ask you to show
17:04 ? Did I say show two groups of seven you
17:10 are interpreting that and that's exactly what I want you
17:12 to do . That's exactly what I want to do
17:14 . But what did I really say ? What did
17:19 I say ? I said show Me two times .
17:22 But listen to their language . They kept saying to
17:27 groups up . Hmm . All those synonyms maybe maybe
17:33 think about that Jose . You want to show me
17:37 three cars as many . I'm going to extend this
17:39 page a little more . What ? Okay . Oh
17:54 seven . You caught yourself . Why did you go
18:00 back ? Because all I heard eight hurt . But
18:06 he wasn't paying attention . You probably must have been
18:08 . He didn't because he stopped . He didn't pay
18:10 attention . He would have kept going . So you
18:11 didn't pay attention . So tell me what you got
18:13 here , Jose I get 21 , you have 21
18:18 . How do you know ? Because I know that
18:22 seven times 47 . 7 times to 14 . And
18:26 if you add seven , more than 14 you'll get
18:30 oh 21 . Cool . You got , can I'm
18:38 gonna say do you have seven or you have ?
18:41 How many groups up here ? That's what I was
18:43 . How many groups ? You have 33 . So
18:46 could I say you have three groups of seven ?
18:48 Can does anybody know the synonym of what I asked
18:51 him in the beginning to do ? What did I
18:55 tell him ? I didn't come up here and show
18:57 me three groups of seven . What did I say
19:04 ? Giovanni ? Three times seven . I did show
19:08 me three times a day . Three times a day
19:11 job . Okay . Someone Dijon A I need you
19:15 to show me four times as many using already .
19:18 What they have . Why three are you finished ?
19:34 So can you explain what you have up on the
19:35 board using all your peers stuff too ? You have
19:40 four times 7 . Do you have uh four times
19:47 as many as to Sandra ? Yes , you do
19:51 . So tell me are we finished ? How do
19:55 you know ? I think are we finished with the
19:58 story ? How do you know ? I'm going to
20:03 read it out loud because I think some people might
20:05 need that . Deandra picked seven apples . What color
20:09 her apples ? Everybody ? Reese picked four times as
20:15 many apples . How many apples did he pick ?
20:19 Are we finished with our story ? Did we solve
20:23 our problem ? No . Talk to me about that
20:27 . Talk to us because we have to figure out
20:29 what it equals . Have we done that ? How
20:34 many of you think we've shown what it equals ?
20:38 What should go with our picture ? To make it
20:41 very clear that we have an answer . We've got
20:46 some equations up here , we've got a visualization ,
20:49 a picture up here . What else would even make
20:52 it better ? Total What is the total Kayleigh ?
20:56 21 ? Yeah . Mhm Jax kelly . You what
21:05 were you gonna say ? Good Morning . Orange .
21:07 21 Jose . Did you say ? 21 when you
21:11 had three groups of seven . Another four groups of
21:15 seven . So what we need to do ? Oh
21:19 10 , It's four groups of seven . What do
21:24 we need to add to the three groups ? Seven
21:26 more . Seven more . Get it going waiting .
21:30 28 . Very good . 28 . What ? 28
21:34 Apples should we label ? Well , why should we
21:37 label every answer in a math story ? So the
21:42 person knows what you're talking about . Absolutely . What's
21:45 the story about ? We don't wanna put oranges ,
21:48 we don't want to put raindrops , we want to
21:52 put apples . So if I was going to answer
21:55 the question , how many apples did he pick ?
21:58 Using our visualization ? The manipulative on the smart board
22:03 using the math equations that you gave me . What
22:07 would we put for our answer ? How every And
22:11 should be up . Because good listeners should have heard
22:13 Caylee . She worked hard on that . Hi ,
22:20 ana 28 28 1 28 Apples . Very good .
22:25 28 . Mhm . That is an example of multiplication
22:33 comparison . Are you changing your predictions a little bit
22:38 ? Are you still going ? Huh ? How many
22:41 of you like that ? Huh ? It's okay .
22:44 Like uh Okay . Don't try how many you're still
22:49 wondering anymore . Help I want to see it again
22:53 . Guess what you're gonna see it again . Because
22:55 I have a feeling most of your Uh huh .
22:58 Brand spanking new . I want to show you another
23:00 problem . Okay . It's an example of multiplication comparisons
23:05 . Think about what you were predicting . It was
23:06 all about . Let's see . Yeah , yeah .
23:13 You change your mind . All right . Here's the
23:16 thing go back to what you were thinking . Multiplication
23:20 comparisons is all about . And I want you to
23:25 focus on the repeated words . I love it because
23:30 repeated words . What we were doing in writing .
23:33 Focus on the repeated words . And Aaliyah's little sister
23:37 is two ft tall . Her dad is three times
23:41 as tall as her little sister Katz follows her Dad
23:45 . Deandra picked seven apples , respect four times as
23:49 many apples . How many did he pick ? Are
23:53 there some repeated words in both of those problems ?
23:56 Are there some repeated words in both of those problems
24:03 ? Are there some repeated words ? Mhm . Erin
24:12 . Are there some repeated words ? Yes . What
24:16 do you see ? Okay , picked you see ,
24:20 pic ? Oh , okay . I see what you're
24:22 doing . I wouldn't know pick is in your twice
24:25 . But I don't know if there are some repeated
24:26 words in both stories . You're absolutely right . So
24:29 let me rephrase it , comparing both stories . Are
24:32 there some repeated words ? Mhm . Would you like
24:36 some help ? Are you thinking more time to think
24:39 or help ? Hell calling somebody that can help ?
24:46 Yeah . So Deandra . Mhm . In the white
24:53 structure grief . Yeah . The great shirt . Oh
24:57 I on uh yes , Okay . Where are they
25:03 ? Little sister and apples ? Little sister and apples
25:07 are all the same words . Oh , I want
25:10 the words in this one to be in this way
25:13 . You are making repeated words in one story .
25:15 Times time . Is that all ? And there's spoilers
25:23 ? Video work . We should forever town . Uh
25:26 huh pal . No , I'm not thinking that when
25:30 the car goes with times her dad is three times
25:34 as tall as her little sister respect . Four times
25:38 as many it will be work as many again ,
25:44 As many as many times as times as this one's
25:51 times as tall . This one's times as many .
25:54 Okay . Think about your fair share . Think about
25:59 multiplication comparison . Go ahead . Okay . Like taking
26:04 a drink . I think what multiplication comparison , you
26:10 know , what does that mean ? Uh Still I
26:14 think it's um it's where you can like the community
26:20 and try to make them like bounce bows and uh
26:26 I think it's the same thing for you can give
26:30 them balance . It's like a story problem and that
26:35 it can help you with story problems about county and
26:41 multiplication . A I think it's actually like where you
26:49 can , I'm like china chunky , chunky . It's
26:52 like it's like in the word like um uh like
26:58 compare it I compare for , you know , again
27:05 , do you have anything else ? Wait a minute
27:37 when I look at the picturesque two on this side
27:39 and six on this time when you were talking about
27:41 your dad is that balance ? So what do you
27:43 mean you have to explain balanced way ? Mhm .
27:48 Ah So you're saying balance for another word for communicative
27:56 Catch . Okay . Give Me five . Anybody want
28:00 to share their thoughts now . Drew thoughts about multiple
28:03 comparisons change . Because I know in the beginning a
28:06 lot of people say we're going to compare multiplication problems
28:12 . Okay . Is that really what we did ?
28:15 Did we compare multiplication problems ? Yes . Or now
28:20 thumbs up . If you think we did compare multiplication
28:22 problems ? Okay explain why we did that , how
28:27 we did that . We were comparing multiplication problems .
28:30 Can you explain it ? You have evidence to explain
28:34 it . Yeah . Matthew we can power towards think
28:41 that will both end them . You compare two words
28:45 in them . Those two words have to do with
28:47 multiplication . Yes . Okay . Did we compare multiplication
28:51 problems ? Because if you said we did it you've
28:54 got to prove it or I'm not going to believe
28:56 it . So you people that just raise your hands
28:58 you better be thinking about how you're gonna prove it
29:01 . If you can't prove it you might say I
29:03 don't know so much if I really believe that's what
29:06 we did . I agree with you . We compared
29:09 the problems the word the story problems and found a
29:13 repeated work from what do you think we really did
29:18 ? Because when I think and maybe I'm thinking different
29:20 than you did . When you all say we compare
29:21 multiplication problems I'm thinking I compared seven times 4-2 times
29:27 three . Did I do that ? No . Well
29:31 that's what I'm thinking because that's what that means to
29:34 me . Who can tell me what they think ?
29:37 Multiplication comparison means and prove it with evidence . Just
29:43 like when we infer in reading we must prove it
29:46 with evidence . Mhm . Sure . Okay Ethan .
29:54 Nice and loud . I believe that multiple creative comparisons
30:03 means . When you compel the two factors in the
30:07 multiplication occasion . Say it again . Nice and loud
30:12 . Um Our thinking is when you compel two factors
30:17 of a multiplication equation . So I'm going to bring
30:22 up this one and you talk to us about what
30:29 you just said . Like what would be the fact
30:32 ? Come on . Okay . All eyes this press
30:38 student Ethan . The teacher battles would be full .
30:45 And how do you know that ? Um I know
30:50 that because um seven times four equals 28 . And
30:56 did our pictures show that ? Um There are pictures
31:01 show seven times four . Or the community four times
31:05 seven . Did it ? Can you circle that ?
31:08 So people can see where it says four groups of
31:12 seven or 7 groups of four ever . You want
31:13 to look at it ? Good . Why don't you
31:18 circle that 1 ? Because that um mm is um
31:25 , the there's a number more fun . Yeah ,
31:28 it is . And who's bad about Tian tian draw
31:31 . And what is the rest of the story about
31:34 ? We've got to use this information . But what
31:36 is the question focusing on ? Um , it's focusing
31:39 on how many apples picked and which one ? Which
31:43 one of these colors shows Reese . Um would Yeah
31:50 , so he said , and let me restate it
31:54 . And if I'm not saying it right , you
31:55 help me because sometimes that kids understand your language better
32:00 than they understand my language because they're used to hearing
32:02 their peers speak . So you're you're saying that multiple
32:06 active multiplication of comparisons are when you're really comparing the
32:11 two factors in a story , to get a product
32:20 , go back to your seat , good job to
32:23 sum it up . I want to look at the
32:25 different ways . You can say £4 , 17 28
32:33 and we know the community property seven times four is
32:37 28 . Let's look at the next week and ordered
32:40 people come up with , we can say it this
32:42 way , let's say it way , we could say
32:49 it this way , it this way , going to
33:06 show you this , and I want you to read
33:08 it carefully . There's another one after it . I'm
33:10 gonna I'm gonna show it to see if you can
33:12 guess what it is . We could say , or
33:23 27 . They get they get what could the other
33:27 way be shouting trump ? What are you thinking ,
33:35 wow ! Seven , seven times as many . seven
33:41 is 28 to us as many as well . Does
33:46 that make sense ? The 728 times as big as
33:51 four . Do you think about the pictures ? I
33:54 mean he had 28/4 . 28 4 is gonna give
33:57 us seven look at how 2028 is four times as
34:03 many as seven natural factors . Mhm . Yeah we
34:12 switched out factors . So what are we gonna switch
34:14 out here ? Yeah , 70 . No . 28
34:19 factors . I gotta think of factors and four .
34:27 Yeah because because four times seven is 28 . So
34:30 we switched them out . We gotta switch them out
34:32 here in the community we could say . Yeah .
34:36 Yes that's what that says , factors as many say
34:49 it really loud . Everybody these these these are groups
35:00 what we wanted in third grade . This is an
35:03 array , this is what we've learned in 3rd and
35:06 4th grade . And this it's called what what we
35:12 talked about today . Who read it like this ?
35:17 We are doing what ? How would you say ?
35:24 Why do it ? Oh , you're saying multi multiplication
35:30 , multiple kind of comparison sounds here . What is
35:34 it everybody with a with You're gonna learn that word
35:43 . Like you learn medical ignition . You're gonna work
35:45 on this . Either tomorrow or after lunch . We'll
35:48 see what happens .
