RI.4.9 Integrate info from 2 texts on the same topic in order to write/speak about the subject - By
00:01 | Hi , Mrs Putman here today , We're going to
00:04 | be talking about R I 4.9 . Let me get
00:10 | that switched around for you are 4.9 is integrating information
00:16 | from two texts on the same topic in order to
00:21 | write or speak about the subject knowledgeably . Now ,
00:24 | this is gonna be a two part video . So
00:26 | today's video is gonna be part one , and then
00:29 | you'll have a second video on Wednesday . And then
00:33 | Thursday you have an activity to go along with these
00:35 | , so keep this close . By that way ,
00:38 | if you go back and look at anything or see
00:42 | the notes I copied down hint , hint . Then
00:45 | you can do that . Uh , so this is
00:48 | where we take a text on the same topic ,
00:51 | and we compare the two eso the big idea .
00:54 | Three to text . The subject of a matter of
00:55 | being discussed are written about in a Texas speech .
00:58 | Discussed it , uh , as in Oh , they
01:01 | said this and this said that and you could discuss
01:02 | the differences and similarities and things like that . And
01:06 | what you can even tell which one is , um
01:08 | , maybe , and a news article , or if
01:10 | one's maybe a journal or if one's a book of
01:14 | some kind Now the ones will be using are both
01:17 | articles . So I kept it on the same type
01:19 | of text for you as well . I didn't switch
01:20 | it up too much . Um , today our topic
01:25 | will be coronavirus , because that is what all the
01:28 | world is talking about right now . So we are
01:31 | going to discuss , uh , two different articles .
01:33 | One is coronavirus , uh , from Scholastic . And
01:37 | what is the coronavirus from U . S A .
01:38 | Today ? Uh , today on Lee , we're going
01:41 | to be focusing on the coronavirus on Scholastic . So
01:45 | I'm going to switch this back around for you ,
01:48 | and then I'm going to pull up our article that
01:52 | will be reading together . And please excuse me if
01:55 | I don't know some of the words . Uh ,
01:57 | it zombies were a little tricky Chinese words . So
02:02 | here we go . Alright . So five big questions
02:04 | about coronavirus . So this is from scholastic . So
02:10 | as you read , think about what are some ways
02:13 | people are trying to stop the spread of the coronavirus
02:15 | , so that's good to know . May get rid
02:17 | of that so you can focus better . There we
02:19 | go . So what is this new coronavirus . It's
02:23 | a virus that causes the disease . Known as co
02:26 | vid 19 , the new coronavirus was first detected in
02:29 | Wuhan , China , late last year . It swept
02:32 | through the city , then spread to other parts of
02:34 | China . The virus was soon spread to other countries
02:38 | , including the US , by people who traveled while
02:41 | infected . Both the number of people infected in the
02:45 | number killed by Kobe 19 have been increasing every day
02:49 | . Ah , March 11th , the World Health Organization
02:51 | declared a pandemic . This is an outbreak of a
02:54 | disease that spreads rapidly and effects many people in different
02:58 | areas around the globe . Across the world , government
03:02 | governments are trying to control the outbreak by restricting travel
03:05 | , closing businesses and schools and educating citizens about how
03:10 | to stay safe . Um , so I noticed I
03:13 | have subtitles That says one , What is the new
03:15 | coronavirus ? So this is where I'm gonna pause .
03:17 | And I would ask myself , Okay , let me
03:20 | kind of like , give a quick , summary summary
03:24 | of what I read . So I would rethink about
03:27 | , like , each paragraph what it talked about .
03:29 | And I would , um , think about most important
03:33 | parts from those . So the first thing I got
03:35 | Let me turn this part down around for you real
03:38 | quick . So let me So undo this . There
03:43 | were you got . And then let me put this
03:45 | up for you . So , reading the first part
03:47 | of the article , I was able to see that
03:50 | , uh , I was able to summarize . It
03:52 | is a virus that was first detected in Wuhan ,
03:54 | China , in late 2019 . It spread all over
03:57 | the country , then to other countries . It was
04:00 | declared a pandemic , and travel restrictions were set in
04:02 | place . Many businesses and schools were forced to close
04:05 | worldwide . So what I did is I just took
04:08 | notes on that very first part of the article .
04:12 | I don't know what the other article is about right
04:15 | now , but I just feel like these are the
04:16 | most important things to remember from that particular part of
04:20 | the reading . So I'm gonna switch this back and
04:23 | I'm gonna go back to the article , and then
04:26 | let's read the second part . So the second part
04:29 | is , let's back up . What exactly is a
04:33 | virus ? So a virus is a type of microscopic
04:36 | germ that can cause an illness . There are hundreds
04:39 | of thousands of different viruses . If you've ever had
04:43 | a runny or stuffy nose , there's a good chance
04:45 | you caught the virus that causes the common colt aim
04:49 | or severe virus . We hear about a lot .
04:52 | Each winner is the influenza virus . We're also known
04:55 | as the flu . Okay , And this is the
04:58 | actual image of the coronavirus . Um , the little
05:04 | little germ . He is , um , he's got
05:08 | the name because he has , like , spikes on
05:10 | its surface , which is considered to be like a
05:13 | crown . And I know that from reading my little
05:16 | caption right here . All right , so think about
05:19 | this part . What ? What exactly is the virus
05:22 | ? That kind of gives me an idea of what
05:23 | is going to be about . I know it's gonna
05:25 | explain to me what , uh , the viruses and
05:28 | it did so I took note that in the second
05:32 | part of the article have there are hundreds of thousands
05:36 | of different viruses . The common cold can cause a
05:39 | runny or stuffy nose , which is mild , while
05:41 | influenza the flu is more severe . And I know
05:45 | that from reading from the article , all right .
05:48 | And let me switch back . I know there's a
05:50 | lot of switching going around and I apologize . Let's
05:53 | pull back up the article now and let's go to
05:56 | the third part . All right , let me There
06:00 | we go . Alright . So number through the third
06:02 | part . This was short , but here we owe
06:04 | . So then it's coronavirus like the flu . That's
06:06 | a question . So this I like how they're doing
06:09 | that . They're asking those questions and then answering them
06:11 | . Um , it really helps me as a reader
06:14 | to see what I'm gonna be reading about . Can
06:17 | you give me an idea ? And it also gives
06:19 | me time to think about like , what do I
06:20 | think ? Uh , do I think it's like the
06:23 | flu ? Do I know anything about it ? Do
06:26 | can I can related to anything ? It's It's good
06:29 | as a reader . Thio . Keep those in mind
06:31 | . So then , is the coronavirus like the flu
06:34 | ? Sort of like the flu . This coronavirus causes
06:37 | as respiratory als illness , so it affects the nose
06:40 | , throat and lungs . Both types of viruses produced
06:44 | some of the same symptoms , such as a cough
06:47 | and fever . Also , experts think the new coronavirus
06:50 | spreads much like other viruses do . When infected people
06:54 | sneeze or cough , they could release the virus into
06:57 | the air and infect other people nearby . And let's
07:02 | see , that's Ah , that's a pretty good short
07:05 | . But a lot of information in there , if
07:06 | you ask , May . It might be short ,
07:08 | but it's got a lot . So we're gonna switch
07:10 | that back out and then pull back up my power
07:13 | point . And on the third part , I can
07:17 | . In my words , I put that cover 19
07:19 | . It's similar to the flu because it affects nose
07:21 | , throat , lungs . Both viruses have the same
07:23 | symptoms , which includes coughing fever . It could spread
07:26 | by sneezing or coughing . Now you'll see that somebody's
07:29 | sentences seem very close , and I we always try
07:32 | to put it in our own words . So we're
07:34 | not . What's that word ? Still , in the
07:37 | author's words , I should have got that word before
07:40 | plagiarism . There it is , a plagiarized . We're
07:41 | not plagiarizing . I should have figured out work out
07:43 | before , uh , during the video , but it
07:46 | is plagiarizing , Uh , but we don't wanna place
07:48 | right , so we try to put in their own
07:50 | words . Sometimes you can't . If you can't ,
07:52 | then you have to cite your sources and you'll get
07:55 | into all that very soon . But not right now
07:57 | . that's a whole another day . All right ,
08:01 | So the part for me for number three waas um
08:04 | , how it is similar to the flu , All
08:07 | right , And now let me switch back . Thio
08:11 | the article . And what now ? We're talking about
08:15 | the fourth one . What makes this virus different ?
08:19 | It's brand new , So doctors are still learning about
08:21 | what makes it unique . Viruses are like a big
08:25 | family , explains Dr Mark Denson Denson , I believe
08:31 | , and infectious disease specialists . They're all related ,
08:33 | but they have different personalities . Detention . Denson and
08:38 | other doctors around the world are working to learn about
08:41 | the new viruses personality , like how quickly and easily
08:44 | it spreads and how to fight it . The goal
08:46 | is to eventually develop a vaccine , which doctors say
08:49 | is the best defense against many viruses . A vaccine
08:53 | is a shot that contains harmless parts of the virus
08:55 | . The vaccine is meant to train your immune system
08:58 | to recognize the virus and fight it off . Health
09:01 | experts are working to have a cove in 19 vaccine
09:04 | ready in about a year , which seems like a
09:07 | long time . But that's how it sometimes takes a
09:09 | while to find the vaccine networks , and they've gone
09:12 | through other ways , but that's not part of the
09:15 | article . That's just from seeing it . So scratch
09:17 | that . Okay , so number four , what can
09:20 | we use our ? How can we , uh ,
09:22 | sum this up in our own words ? What are
09:24 | the most important detail to me as a reader ?
09:27 | What do I think the other article might mention or
09:30 | whatever I think might be different . So I'm gonna
09:32 | put what I think , Um , summarize it and
09:34 | what I think are the most important . So ,
09:37 | looking at the fourth part , I thought , it's
09:40 | a it's brand new . Doctors are trying to learn
09:42 | how quickly and easily this , um it sprays and
09:44 | how to fight it . There is no vaccine ,
09:46 | but they have one in a year . Vaccines will
09:49 | help recognize and fight the virus . And then we
09:55 | go into our last part . Which E . S
10:02 | . Should we be worried ? So should we be
10:04 | worried ? Health experts say that most kids are not
10:07 | at high risk for cove in 19 . Even when
10:09 | Children get infected with the virus , they do not
10:12 | usually get very sick . But the virus is a
10:14 | very serious threat to adults who are older or who
10:17 | have certain medical conditions like lung disease , federal ,
10:20 | state and local governments are taking are taking steps to
10:23 | keep everyone as safe as possible . In many places
10:26 | , schools and businesses have been temporary closed to prevent
10:29 | people from spreading . The virus is concerts , sporting
10:33 | events and other big gatherings have been canceled . In
10:35 | addition , people who might have been exposed to the
10:37 | virus are being quarantined . They may be closely monitored
10:40 | to see if they show symptoms . Health officials say
10:43 | you should follow the current rules and guidelines in your
10:46 | community . You should also take the same steps you
10:48 | want you would to avoid getting or spreading a cold
10:51 | . Wash your hands frequently and sneeze and cough into
10:54 | a tissue or your elbow . And below are some
10:57 | more tips that show you . I thought that was
11:00 | really cute . You could wash your hands and sing
11:03 | Happy Birthday twice . Or you could just go through
11:05 | the whole alphabet and you see that alphabet kind of
11:08 | slow ? Uh , that works to a B .
11:12 | C . D . That's how I was taught ,
11:16 | I believe All right . So paragraph I'm sorry .
11:19 | Part by part five of this article . Should we
11:22 | be worried ? What did I find that was the
11:24 | most important . How did I summarize this ? How
11:28 | did I , uh , what did I take away
11:30 | as being the most important ? Like if I was
11:32 | take notes on this , what would I put ?
11:34 | So I put that kids are not at high risk
11:39 | , but if they do get sick , it smiled
11:41 | most of the time very seriously . It is very
11:43 | serious for older adults who have medical issues . All
11:46 | people who might have been exposed to the virus are
11:48 | required to be quarantine and another side park . They
11:52 | require quarantine for two weeks , which is 14 days
11:56 | . So that's what I took as being the most
11:59 | important part of this article . So as we read
12:04 | , we always try to think about . Like I
12:05 | said , What's important ? What might be different ?
12:07 | What might the other article mention ? So in our
12:11 | next video will read the second article . And then
12:16 | , like I said on Thursday , you'll have a
12:18 | nice little , uh , activity to go with both
12:21 | of these . So please make sure you are watching
12:25 | and going back and reading . If you need anything
12:26 | , I will post the link to this article at
12:30 | the bottom of the video in the comments section .
12:33 | So do click on it if you want to go
12:36 | back and read it . I did not read the
12:37 | very bottom part , which is avoid getting sick ,
12:39 | which is important , but we're just focusing on those
12:42 | five parts of the article . Um , I hope
12:46 | you'll have a great day . And if you have
12:48 | any questions , let me know . I'll see you
12:50 | soon . |
