00:06 | E readers . It's just such a great day for
00:08 | reading poetry outside , and that's what I've been doing
00:11 | . I've been using this poem to help me figure
00:14 | out theme really , like finding themes when I'm reading
00:17 | stories or poems . It really helps me understand in
00:21 | poems and stories . So what is a theme ?
00:25 | It's not what the story is about , but it's
00:27 | what the story is really about . So I'll give
00:30 | you an example . When I look at stories when
00:32 | I look at poems , the first thing I do
00:35 | is I try to figure out from the details .
00:37 | What is this story or poem ? Mostly about thin
00:40 | . I move on and I try to think .
00:42 | Huh ? What is this story or poem ? Have
00:44 | to do with my life now , To find the
00:46 | theme , I have to relate the poem not just
00:49 | to my life but thio Everybody's life . How could
00:52 | this poem , er story affect everyone ? What does
00:55 | that have to do with everyone's life ? I'll show
00:58 | you what I mean with a couple of poems of
01:00 | my own . This poem is called Listen to the
01:04 | Masn's by Shel Silverstein . Listen to the Masn's child
01:09 | . Listen to the dome . Listen to the shouldn't
01:12 | The impossible's the wants . Listen to the never halves
01:16 | . Then listen close to me . Anything can happen
01:19 | , child . Anything could be . When I'm trying
01:23 | to determine the theme of this poem , I have
01:26 | to think back and decide . What is this poem
01:30 | mostly about ? Well , ah , lot of the
01:33 | words . I see our words like Mustn't don't shouldn't
01:39 | and won't All of these remind me of people who
01:42 | say I can't do something Then I like to look
01:48 | at the very last line of the poem in this
01:51 | poem . It says Anything can happen , Child ,
01:55 | anything could be . Now that last line of the
01:58 | poem is important . It's the one you remember after
02:02 | you're done reading it . So I know that this
02:04 | line is important . It's so different than the rest
02:08 | of the poem . The rest of this poem reminds
02:11 | me of the people who say I can't do something
02:14 | , but the last line says anything can happen .
02:17 | It makes me think that I can do anything .
02:20 | When I think about thes two parts of the poem
02:24 | , I decided that the theme is probably even though
02:27 | people will say that you can't do something . Always
02:31 | remember that anything is possible if you just put your
02:35 | mind to it . How to paint a donkey by
02:39 | Naomi she of nine . She said the head was
02:42 | too large . The Who's too small . I could
02:46 | clean my paint brush , but I couldn't get rid
02:49 | of that voice . While they watched . I crumpled
02:52 | him . Let us blue body stay in my hand
02:56 | . I cried . When he hit the can ,
02:58 | she smiled . I could try again . Maybe this
03:02 | is what I unfold in the dark , deciding for
03:06 | the rest of my life that donkey was just the
03:10 | right size . Let's look at the details of this
03:14 | poem , and then we can figure out what this
03:16 | poem is about . The first line say , She
03:19 | said the head was too large , the hooves too
03:22 | small . Someone must have told the author that a
03:26 | painting that she made didn't look right . We know
03:30 | that the author feels bad about this because later ,
03:33 | she says , I could clean my paint brush ,
03:36 | but I couldn't get rid of that voice . She
03:38 | can't stop thinking about someone else's criticism of her work
03:44 | . Now she throws the donkey picture away , it
03:48 | says . I cried when he hit the can .
03:51 | The can must mean a trash can . Now let's
03:56 | pay special attention to the last signs of this poem
03:59 | . Poets know that because those lines come last will
04:02 | remember them the most . So they usually put important
04:05 | things in these lines , this says , deciding for
04:10 | the rest of my life that donkey was just the
04:13 | right size . The pope believes that this picture was
04:17 | perfect the way she made it , even if someone
04:20 | else that it didn't look right . She makes a
04:23 | decision for the rest of her life . This is
04:25 | a life changing decision for her . It's probably something
04:29 | that she'll dio whenever anybody judges her artwork in the
04:32 | future . After reading the details , what do you
04:37 | think this poem is mostly about ? Pay close attention
04:40 | to those last lines . I think this poem is
04:46 | about someone judging your artwork and saying it doesn't look
04:49 | right when in fact it looks just the way that
04:52 | you intended it to . This poem reminds me of
04:55 | my own experience . When I was a kid ,
04:57 | I do this picture of myself . I had this
04:59 | big head in this little body . I thought it
05:01 | was a great picture , but my classmates laughed at
05:04 | it . now thinking back . I still think it
05:06 | was a great picture , and I wish I wasn't
05:08 | worried about what my classmates thought of it . Now
05:11 | let me take what I know about how this poem
05:14 | reminds me of my life and see if I can
05:16 | make it related . Thio everyone's life so I could
05:18 | find the theme . Now if I think hard ,
05:21 | I start to think that this poem is really about
05:24 | art and how , whenever you make art Onley person
05:29 | who you should care about , the only opinion that
05:31 | matters is your own . So that's what I think
05:34 | the theme of this so readers . The next time
05:37 | that you're reading a poem or a story , think
05:40 | to yourself . What are the details of this poem
05:43 | Tell me , is what the story is about this
05:46 | poem is about . Then think , How does this
05:49 | poem her story relate to me ? News what you
05:51 | know about the poem relating to you and try to
05:53 | get that poem to relate to everyone . Once you
05:56 | find how a poem or story relates to everyone's life
05:59 | , then you've found the theme |
