eSpark Learning: Recounting Stories Instructional Video (2.RL.2) - By espark learning videos
00:06 | Hello , readers . It's Mrs Deal . Today I
00:09 | went to the library and I got this book ,
00:12 | The Little Red him . Now I really like this
00:15 | book . It's one of my favorite folk tales .
00:17 | Folk tales are stories that have been told over and
00:20 | over again for many , many years . This is
00:23 | a really neat version by Jerry Pinkney . He drew
00:26 | a lot of these illustrations , and you might recognize
00:29 | his name from other books . He's illustrated so many
00:32 | books . So in this book , I am going
00:36 | to make sure I ask myself two important questions .
00:40 | When I read books , especially folktales and fairy tales
00:43 | , I like to ask myself , What is this
00:46 | story mostly about ? I also like to ask myself
00:50 | , What lesson did I learn from this story ?
00:53 | Sometimes stories can teach us things about our lives ,
00:58 | so pay close attention and try to answer those questions
01:01 | with me . In the story , the hen find
01:04 | some seeds and finds out that they are wheat seeds
01:08 | . You can use them to grow wheat and bake
01:10 | bread , she asks her friends , the pig ,
01:13 | the dog , the calf and the rat . If
01:16 | they'll help her to plant these seeds and they each
01:20 | say not I in the book , it says Not
01:23 | I said the rat , not I said the goat
01:25 | . Not I said , the pig , Not I
01:27 | said , the dog . The hen decides to plant
01:30 | the wheat herself . She helps the weak grow tall
01:34 | . She goes back to her friends and asks Who
01:36 | will help me cut and thresh the wheat ? Not
01:39 | I said the goat . Not I said the pig
01:41 | . Not I said the dog . Not I said
01:43 | the rat . No one will help her , so
01:46 | she does it herself . When it's time to grind
01:49 | the wheat to grain , she asks her friends again
01:52 | , Who will help me take the grain to the
01:54 | mill ? Not I said the pig . Not I
01:56 | said the dog . Not I said the rat .
01:58 | Not I said the goat . So the hen has
02:01 | to do this job all by herself to finally ,
02:05 | it's time to make the bread . Who will help
02:08 | me bake the bread ? Asked the little red hen
02:10 | . Not I said the dog . Not I said
02:12 | the rat . Not I said the goat . Not
02:14 | I said the pig . So the little red hen
02:17 | and her chicks do it all by themselves . Now
02:20 | all the animals smell the sweet bread . The little
02:23 | red hen says I know who will eat the golden
02:25 | bread . I surely will , said the short brown
02:28 | dog . I surely will , said the thin grey
02:31 | cat . I surely will , said the tall black
02:33 | goat . I surely will , said the round pink
02:36 | pig . Oh , no , you won't see the
02:38 | little red hen who did not help me plant the
02:41 | seeds nor thresh the wheat , nor take the grain
02:44 | to the Miller nor bake the bread so the little
02:48 | red hen and her chicks eat that delicious bread all
02:51 | by themselves . So , did you think about any
02:54 | of the answers to the question I asked you before
02:57 | we read the story ? What do you think the
02:59 | story is mostly about now , to answer that question
03:05 | , I like to think to what happened at the
03:07 | end of the story . So at the end of
03:09 | the story , the hem gets to eat this bread
03:15 | that she had made all by herself . Then I
03:18 | like to think , How did she get there ?
03:20 | Well , she planted the seeds . She harvested the
03:25 | grain , she ground the wheat into the grain .
03:30 | And then she baked the bread . It was a
03:33 | lot of hard work , and nobody helped her .
03:36 | So this story is mostly about working really hard to
03:41 | do something and then enjoying what you've done and filling
03:46 | the rewards from all that hard work that you put
03:49 | into it . Now I want to think , What
03:53 | lesson did I learn in this story ? I remember
03:58 | those friends of the head . They didn't help her
04:02 | at all , and in the end they didn't get
04:05 | to eat that yummy bread and that yummy chance .
04:10 | So this story teaches me that if you don't work
04:13 | hard , you don't get to enjoy the rewards .
04:16 | But if you do work hard , then you can
04:19 | enjoy the rewards of all your hard work . So
04:23 | the next time that you read a book like a
04:25 | fairy tale or a folk tale or even any other
04:28 | story , try asking yourselves those questions . What is
04:32 | the story about ? And what did I learn from
04:35 | this story ? |
