00:26 important about the information we're reading about . The main
00:31 idea of a paragraph tells the topic of the paragraph
00:34 . It tells us what all or most of the
00:36 sentences air about . The other Ascendance is in the
00:39 paragraph are called Details , details , describe or explain
00:44 the main idea . Let's read the paragraph on this
00:52 page and work to find the main idea and supporting
00:55 details . Make sure to follow along as I read
00:59 . Here we go . Hundreds of years ago ,
01:03 Illinois was covered with prairie grass . The grass when
01:07 it died and decomposed made the soil very rich for
01:11 farming . This rich soil made Illinois one of the
01:14 most important farming states in the country . Ever since
01:18 pioneer days , corn has been the state's most important
01:22 crap . Soybeans are a second . Hey , wheat
01:27 , rye and oats are grown , too . When
01:34 thinking about what we just read , we know that
01:37 we're reading about Illinois , but we also noticed that
01:40 the word farming is repeated in the paragraph . That
01:44 is why the words are highlighted in red . So
01:48 when thinking about farming in Illinois , we confined the
01:51 main idea of this paragraph in the third sentence .
01:54 Can you look for it with me ? Oh ,
01:59 I think I see it . It says that Illinois
02:02 is one of the most important farming states in the
02:05 country . I cannot take that main idea and put
02:13 it in our main idea organizer . The main idea
02:17 goes in the middle because that's what is most important
02:20 about our reading . Now I'm going to go back
02:24 to the paragraph to find details that tell more about
02:28 the main idea . The other sentences give us details
02:35 that support our main idea of why farming as important
02:38 to Illinois . Each of these sentences in Green tells
02:42 us more about Illinois and farming . Let's look at
02:45 the details . Farming is important in Illinois because prairie
02:51 grass made the soil rich , making it easier to
02:53 grow things . It is one of the most important
02:57 farming states in the country , and last but not
03:00 least , that corn is a very important crop .
03:06 Now that I found details to support the main idea
03:09 . I can finish my main idea organizer here ,
03:17 I place the important details into the organizer . You
03:21 can see that each of the details sentences tells me
03:24 more about why farming is important to Illinois . Take
03:29 a moment to read through the organizer on your own
03:43 . As you can see , readers , finding main
03:45 idea and details is an important reading strategy . It's
03:50 important because it helps us become better readers . We
03:54 can better understand what we're reading about by finding the
