00:06 Hello , readers . It's Miss Bushman . Today we
00:09 are going to be working on a good reader strategy
00:13 . When good readers read , they ask and answer
00:17 questions . When we ask questions , we can always
00:21 go back into the text to see if we can
00:23 answer them . Asking and answering questions helps us better
00:28 understand our reading . I ask questions all the time
00:36 . When I asked questions , they usually start with
00:38 these words . Who , what , when , where
00:44 , why or how some questions can even start with
00:49 the phrase . I wonder . Let's try asking questions
00:54 as I look at an article about Jackie Robinson .
00:57 As I read . Be thinking about the Who ,
00:59 what , when , where , why or how questions
01:03 you can ask about Jackie . Follow along as I
01:06 read football , baseball and track these air all sports
01:11 that Jackie Robinson played . But he's known for being
01:15 much more than just a tremendous athlete . Jackie was
01:19 the first African American to play modern major league baseball
01:23 at the time , baseball was segregated by race and
01:26 blacks could only play in the minor leagues . But
01:30 in 1947 Jackie made history when he joined a major
01:34 league team , the Brooklyn Dodgers , soon after joining
01:38 the Dodgers , Jackie became their star second basement .
01:42 He also was a very good hitter runner and base
01:46 stealer . He was named to the Baseball Hall of
01:49 Fame in 1962 . Jackie Robinson was a great athlete
01:55 , but he also was an American hero . Because
01:59 of his courage . He stood up to segregation and
02:02 helped bring freedom to many African Americans . As a
02:09 reader , I cannot use thes question words to help
02:13 me ask questions about Jackie Robinson . This will help
02:16 me better understand what I read in the article .
02:23 First , I'm going to use the word why to
02:25 ask a question about Jackie I whether he was a
02:29 tremendous athlete . So using this word , I can
02:33 ask the question , Why do people think Jackie was
02:36 such a great athlete To find the answer ? I
02:39 will go back into the text looking at the third
02:45 paragraph . I can see why Jackie was such a
02:48 great baseball player . Let's zoom in even closer to
02:51 this part of the article . I see clues in
02:57 this paragraph that Tommy why Jackie was such a great
03:00 athlete . First I see that he was a star
03:04 second basement . He was also a good hitter runner
03:08 and based dealer . He even was named to the
03:12 Baseball Hall of Fame . Now that I've looked back
03:18 to find clues in the text , I can answer
03:21 my question as to why Jackie was a great athlete
03:24 . He was a great second baseman , hitter and
03:26 runner . He was named to the Baseball Hall of
03:29 Fame . Are you wondering anything else about Jackie ?
03:36 I know I am . Another question I want to
03:40 ask about him uses the word . What ? I'm
03:44 wondering , What did Jackie do that changed history ?
03:48 To find the answer . Let's go back in the
03:50 text . I can find the answer to my question
03:55 in the second paragraph . Let's zoom in so that
03:59 I can find the answer . I see something really
04:05 important in the first sentence . Do you see the
04:08 answer to our question ? It says here that Jackie
04:12 was the first African American to play modern major league
04:16 baseball . This answers the question of what did Jackie
04:23 do to change history ? He was the first African
04:26 American to play Major league baseball . I'm going to
04:33 ask one more question about Jackie using the word why
04:37 , but I'm going to need your help to find
04:39 the answer The last question I'm asking is , Why
04:44 does Jackie Robinson Ah , hero , Do you remember
04:48 what I'm going to do to answer the question ?
04:53 That's right . I'm going back into the text .
04:56 Let's go . I see that I can answer this
05:02 question using the last paragraph . Re read the last
05:06 paragraph in purple to see if you confined . Why
05:09 Jackie is a hero . Were you able to find
05:23 the answer to our question ? I waas When I
05:27 zoom into this paragraph , I see the word hero
05:31 . If I keep reading after hero , I see
05:34 that Jackie stood up to segregation and brought freedom to
05:38 many African Americans . As you can see , I'm
05:45 now able to answer our question , read the last
05:48 question and answer to yourself . Readers . I hope
05:57 you enjoyed asking and answering questions about Jackie Robinson .
06:02 Now , when you go off into your reading ,
06:04 make sure to ask questions and see if you can
06:06 go back and answer them in order to become a
06:09 better reader .
