00:01 In this video , we will define the types of
00:04 non fiction genres and what nonfiction is nonfiction . Let's
00:13 look at that word first . The word non means
00:16 not fiction means fake . So if we put those
00:20 together , it means not fake , which means riel
00:26 . So non fiction is not fake or topics that
00:30 actually happened or are really so Nonfiction are really things
00:35 . Fiction are fake things . Our first category .
00:42 We're going to talk about his poetry now . Poetry
00:44 could actually be fiction or nonfiction . You could have
00:49 a poem that was about an actual riel event like
00:52 the Civil War , um , or someone's life .
00:56 Or you could have a poem that is fiction that's
00:59 made up like Sarah Cynthia , Sylvia South . That's
01:02 a fictional poem . Poetry is a shortened form of
01:08 writing that may follow a form or structure , so
01:11 it uses lines . It's organized into stanzas , and
01:15 sometimes you have poems that have certain rhyme schemes like
01:19 limericks , or you have some poems that don't have
01:23 any rules or structure like a free verse . Poems
01:27 are the authors expression of feelings and opinions . So
01:31 how the author feels or thinks about something . Here's
01:37 some examples of poetry books Shel Silverstein is a very
01:42 famous poet . He's written books like Where The Sidewalk
01:45 Ends and a Light in the Attic , and these
01:47 are a collection of poems . Rolling in the Aisles
01:50 is a collection of funny poems , and the 100
01:53 best poems of all Time is again another poetry ,
01:56 anthology or collection of poems . Our next nonfiction genre
02:03 is Biography . Ah , Biography is a true story
02:09 of someone else's life written by someone else . And
02:13 that's what you really need to remember is that it
02:16 is a true story of someone's life . But it's
02:18 not written by that same person . It's written by
02:21 someone else . Here's some examples of biographies . As
02:29 you see , each of these books is about a
02:31 famous person , but if you look at the bottom
02:34 underneath the title , there are different names such as
02:39 Joanne Price , David Porter and Martin Green . These
02:43 are the authors of those biographies , so each of
02:45 these books was not written by the celebrity . It
02:48 was written by someone else , and therefore it's a
02:50 biography . An autobiography is a true story of someone
02:57 else's life , just like a biography , but it's
03:01 written by themselves . It's written by that person .
03:04 If you think about auto auto means like personally ,
03:08 you can do it . So an autobiography is when
03:11 someone writes about their own life . Ah , memoir
03:17 is sort of like an autobiography , but it's just
03:21 a shorter account of their life . It's a memory
03:24 , so think of the word memory When you think
03:27 of memoir . It's a true short account of the
03:30 author's experiences , and it's written by themselves . So
03:33 it's still written by the person it's about . But
03:36 it's just a memory . Not necessarily they , necessarily
03:40 their whole life . A real memory in that person's
03:43 life is what a memoir is . Here are some
03:48 examples of autobiographies and memoirs . The book Soul Surfer
03:53 is about an actual person . Bethany Hamilton , who
03:57 was attacked by a shark , and she is a
03:59 server with one arm . And Frank . The Diary
04:03 of Young Girl is also an autobiography , and Frank
04:06 actually wrote it . It's her diary entries . Chicken
04:09 Soup for the Teenage Soul has a collection of memoirs
04:13 that actual teenagers right about their life . So these
04:17 air all stories about people's lives written by those people
04:25 , informational texts are another form of nonfiction . If
04:30 you see it has the word information in it .
04:33 So what do informational text tell us ? They provide
04:38 information on a certain topic you want to know more
04:41 about . So you could have a book about science
04:46 or a book about how to make crafts . A
04:48 book about a certain sport like soccer . Any articles
04:53 ? Or maybe you have a book about social studies
04:56 . Thes All have information , so their informational .
05:03 Here are some examples of informational texts . There's a
05:07 book on baseball , a book on how to draw
05:10 . There's a book on soccer , Ah , Book
05:12 on Cars and a Travel Book of Europe . So
05:16 all of these books are really fax and information about
05:20 certain topics . The next type of non fiction genre
05:26 is articles and essays . Articles and essays are a
05:31 short piece of nonfiction that expresses the writer's opinions or
05:35 shares information about a subject . So it's usually a
05:39 shorter form of writing , and it's it's someone's opinion
05:42 about something . Here's an example of an article on
05:48 the left hand side website helps boost brain power .
05:52 So in this article , the person is trying to
05:55 argue that a website helps increase brain power on the
06:00 right . You'll see on essay why libraries are important
06:05 so this essay is about why libraries are important ,
06:09 and the author is writing their opinion on that .
06:15 Letters are the last type of genre we're going to
06:18 discuss . Ah , letter is a text from one
06:22 person to another , so someone is writing to a
06:26 specific person . It has a certain format . You
06:29 start with deer in the person's name or sincerely ,
06:33 or some kind of beginning or end to introduce yourself
06:37 and to conclude who it's for . You have business
06:41 letters , which are more formal , and then you
06:44 have personal letters like if you were to write a
06:46 letter to a friend or family member , letters are
06:50 in first person point of view . So if I
06:53 was writing a letter , I would say I feel
06:56 this way or I hope you're doing well . It
06:59 wouldn't just be Miss Rice . Singer thinks you're doing
07:02 well . It's written in first person point of view
07:07 . Here are some examples of letters . If you
07:10 look on the left hand side , we have a
07:12 business letter notice . It starts with the name ,
07:17 the address , the date and then dear , the
07:21 person's name , and then it's organized into paragraphs .
07:25 It ends with sincerely and the person's name again .
07:28 So Business letter is a lot more formal . Then
07:31 we have a personal letter on the right again .
07:35 We put the address the date , dear the person's
07:39 name . It's organized into paragraphs and then at the
07:42 end , it has a more personal ending . Greeting
07:45 love from Wendy . So personal letters are a lot
07:50 less formal . These are all the non fiction genres
07:56 that we will be discussing . Make sure you filled
07:59 out all your notes .
