00:01 Hi . My name is Rebecca . Every culture has
00:04 some wise sayings that give advice about life . These
00:08 things are called Proverbs in English . All right ,
00:12 If you really want to take your English to a
00:14 higher level , it would be good to learn some
00:17 of these proverbs . If you're doing an exam like
00:20 the Toefel or the aisles , it would definitely be
00:23 worthwhile to include one of these proverbs . If it
00:26 makes sense , because it would show that you know
00:28 English Really well , not just the language , but
00:31 also the culture off the language . All right ,
00:34 let's look at six of them , and you're gonna
00:36 help me to fill them in . All right ,
00:39 So the first one is about love , and it
00:41 says love is Have you heard this expression at all
00:45 ? Do you know what it might be ? Alright
00:48 . It for you . So it says love is
00:55 blind . What does that mean ? Love is blind
00:59 . Love is blind . Means that when you are
01:01 in love with someone , you can't really see their
01:04 faults very clearly . All right . So love is
01:08 blind . Means everything Seems like it's all fine when
01:11 you are in love . Okay . Next time is
01:17 have anybody anyone hurt that ? And so the expression
01:24 the proverb is time is money and time is money
01:29 means that time is a valuable resource , which you
01:33 have to use carefully , just like money that money
01:36 and time are both valuable . Resource is so time
01:39 is money . Don't waste my time . Time is
01:41 money . I gotta get going . That's how people
01:44 use it . All right , Next . Haste makes
01:49 now maybe you're asking what is haste ? I'll explain
01:51 to you in a minute . For those of you
01:53 who might have heard it , What's the last word
01:55 here ? Waste haste makes waste . Haste means hurrying
02:05 up , doing something really fast . So when we
02:08 say haste makes waste , what we're trying to say
02:11 is that sometimes if you try to do something too
02:14 fast , you make so many mistakes that you end
02:18 up wasting time or money or resource is all right
02:22 . So don't do something too fast , because you
02:25 might mess it up . And then everything will the
02:29 waste . All right . Next one . Ignorance is
02:34 any idea . Ignorance is bliss . Now , maybe
02:43 you're not sure of what some of these words mean
02:45 . So let me explain . Ignorance means not knowing
02:49 something . Okay , if you are ignorant about something
02:52 you don't know about that ignorance is the Now bliss
02:56 is a state of complete happiness and joy . All
03:00 right , so why would you be very happy not
03:03 to know something ? Well , if you've lived for
03:07 a little while , you know that sometimes when you
03:09 know about certain sad things , they make you unhappy
03:13 . So in that expression , in that situation ,
03:16 we say ignorance is bliss that sometimes not knowing about
03:21 something is easier and happier than knowing the truth .
03:26 Okay , next one , This one I know does
03:30 exist in various languages . So perhaps you'll be able
03:32 to fill it in here . Better late than never
03:42 . Better late than never . It means it kind
03:45 of explains itself that it's better if something happens late
03:49 than if it doesn't happen at all . So very
03:52 common situation in which people use this proverb is if
03:55 you're having a party and you have a set time
03:59 and people are supposed to come at that time ,
04:01 but somebody comes really late and let's say he apologizes
04:05 . Oh , I'm sorry I'm so late and you
04:07 say , Well , that's okay . Better late than
04:08 never . In other words , it's it's better that
04:11 you came a little bit late . Rather than that
04:13 you didn't come at all . All right , next
04:16 one . Easy . Come easy . Go these air
04:25 towards easy come Easy go . What does that mean
04:30 ? That means that if something came to you very
04:33 easily , you might also lose it very easily .
04:37 Alright , Perhaps you want some money but then you
04:39 went and spent all the money and it's gone .
04:42 Or maybe someone came into your life very easily .
04:44 But then sadly , they left very easily . So
04:48 then we would say easy come easy go . All
04:52 right . So which one means that time is really
04:55 valuable ? Time is money . Which one means that
05:00 it's better not to know about bad things ? Sometimes
05:05 ignorance is bliss . Which one means that when you're
05:09 in love , you can't really see straight ? You
05:11 don't see also the false that somebody else might have
05:15 Love is blind . Which one means it's a good
05:19 thing that something happened rather than never happening . Even
05:23 if it happened late . Better late than never .
05:28 Which one ? Okay , better not to do things
05:31 too fast . Otherwise , everything might get messed up
05:34 . What do you say ? Haste makes waste .
05:38 And last one easy come easy go . Something that
05:42 came into your life very easily might leave your life
05:45 very easily . Okay , If you'd like to do
05:47 a quiz on this subject , please go to our
05:49 website , www dot envied dot com . You could
05:54 also subscribe to my YouTube channel and watch lots of
05:57 other videos to help you improve your English . What
05:59 you're trying to do so sincerely . Okay . All
06:03 right . Thanks very much for watching . Bye for
06:05 now .
