00:0-1 Hi . I'm here to teach you about how to
00:01 use quotation marks . Um , one of the most
00:03 common ways is around quoted material . So if you're
00:08 quoting the exact words that someone has said or written
00:11 , you'd use quotation marks . Don't be silly ,
00:13 said Sarah . Um , you'd also use quotation marks
00:17 around certain types of titles , not book titles ,
00:20 but chapters of books , poems , songs , that
00:24 sort of thing . Um , for example , the
00:26 song Roxanne by the police . You'd also use quotation
00:30 marks around words if you're talking about those words .
00:34 So , for example , he often uses the word
00:37 plethora , but I don't think he knows what it
00:39 means . So when it comes to using other punctuation
00:43 with quotation marks , um , there are a couple
00:46 of pretty straightforward rules when you're using commas or periods
00:51 , those , they're gonna go inside the quotation marks
00:54 . So stop , he said . And you put
00:57 the comma inside with colons and semicolons those they're going
01:00 to go on the outside . So he said ,
01:04 I'll just have one . However he really wanted to
01:08 , and with question marks and exclamation marks , those
01:12 Congar oh , either way , and what that depends
01:15 on is whether they're part of the quoted material or
01:17 part of the sentence as a whole . So in
01:20 this case , did you hear that ? She asked
01:23 . The question is part of the quote versus Did
01:27 you hear him say the meeting starts at two .
01:30 The meeting starts at two . Isn't a question ,
01:32 but the larger sentence Did you hear him say that
01:36 ? That is a question . So you put the
01:38 question mark on the outside of the quotation marks .
