00:01 a run on sentence is a sentence that is too
00:04 long . Many of my students don't know when to
00:08 stop their sentence and their sentences super long . And
00:13 this is a big problem in my students . Writing
00:17 a run on sentence usually has mawr than one complete
00:22 idea . And if it has more than one complete
00:25 idea , you have to be very , very careful
00:30 . Okay , let's look at some examples . I
00:33 called my mother . She was not home . I
00:38 called my mother . She was not home . This
00:40 is a run on sentence now . It's not very
00:43 long , but this is a bad sentence because in
00:47 this sentence we have to complete ideas . And this
00:51 is bad English . Well , how do we fix
00:55 a run on sentence ? Well , it's easy after
00:59 a complete idea . Stop the sentence , just write
01:04 a period and then start a new sentence . It's
01:07 really , really , really easy . So let's go
01:10 back to that bad example . I called my mother
01:13 . She was not home . Well , stop the
01:16 sentence . I called my mother period space . She
01:20 was not home . Great . This is great .
01:23 This is good English writing . Now . Now ,
01:25 another way to fix a run on sentence . is
01:29 after your complete idea . Use a comma and then
01:34 we have a space . And then we use a
01:37 special word we can use . And but so or
01:44 or Okay . So again , here is the bad
01:48 example . I called my mother . She was not
01:51 home . Well , we can fix this with a
01:54 comma . I called my mother comma space , but
01:59 she was not home . Now this is good sentence
02:04 . Let's look at another example . The TV is
02:08 big calma . It was expensive . This is a
02:12 run on sentence . Now . This sentence has a
02:16 calma , but it doesn't have one of the special
02:20 words . And but so or or so remember the
02:25 first rule . How do we fix run on sentences
02:29 after your first complete idea , use a period ,
02:33 stop your sentence and then do a space and then
02:36 start your new sentence . So the TV is big
02:40 Stop . It was expensive or if you want to
02:44 use a comma , the TV is big comma .
02:48 So it was expensive . If you'd like to practice
02:52 this more , click on the link under the video
