00:0-1 the first week of 2017 is going well for you
00:04 . Um , I had a really , really nice
00:06 New Year's celebration with right here in my house ,
00:10 with my family and some of my best friends ,
00:14 and we had a lot of great food . We
00:17 talked and laughed a lot . We really enjoy each
00:20 other's company . And we also watched some of the
00:22 festivities on TV . So I hope your new Year
00:27 was also wonderful . And today I want to talk
00:31 about the future because at the beginning of a new
00:34 year Ah , lot of people start making statements about
00:37 the future . What is going to happen ? Um
00:40 , in the upcoming year , and I wanted to
00:43 clear up some confusion about the different ways to talk
00:47 about the future in English . Okay , um ,
00:52 so English has a number of different ways to talk
00:54 about the future we can use will and won't weaken
00:58 , say , going to we can even use the
01:02 present continuous . So today I'm going to explain all
01:05 of that to you with some really concrete examples ,
01:09 and I would also like to ask you to practice
01:12 . So as I'm going through these examples and teaching
01:15 you how to talk about the future in English .
01:18 Try to practice by writing your own examples . Just
01:22 write a comment , Um , under this video .
01:25 Okay , so let's get started . So the first
01:28 thing that you can do when talking about the future
01:31 is to talk about your intentions , What you intend
01:35 to do what you want to do And when talking
01:39 about intentions , we use going to . So ,
01:42 for example , you might say this year I'm going
01:45 to read more books , or this year I'm going
01:49 to lose weight . Or maybe this year I'm going
01:52 to quit smoking . Okay , remember that in fast
01:57 spoken English going too often sounds like gonna So if
02:03 I were to say those sentences fast , I would
02:05 say them like this this year . I'm going to
02:08 read more this year . I'm gonna lose weight this
02:11 year . I'm going to quit smoking , so you'll
02:14 notice that these air all intentions There are things that
02:17 I have in my mind that I want to do
02:20 . Um , but they're really things that are in
02:23 the future that are not really confirmed plans . So
02:27 for confirmed plans or some people call these arrangements which
02:31 are definitely going to happen then we have two options
02:36 . We can use the present continuous , so that's
02:40 with I N g . Or we can use going
02:43 to let me give you some examples of confirmed plans
02:47 . So let's say , uh , I'm planning on
02:52 taking a cruise in the month of July and I've
02:56 already bought the tickets and I've already put it on
02:58 my calendar . So it's definitely going to happen so
03:02 I can use the present continuous to talk about the
03:05 future . When I have confirmed plans . I can
03:08 say I'm taking a cruise in July , Okay ,
03:12 I'm taking that's present continuous , but I'm talking about
03:17 the future . I'm taking a cruise in July ,
03:20 so that part in July makes it clear that this
03:23 is a confirmed plan in the future . When talking
03:27 about confirmed plans using the present continuous , we usually
03:31 add that future date say in July , because if
03:35 I just say I'm taking a cruise , then maybe
03:39 it sounds like I'm taking a cruise right now ,
03:41 right , because that's how we usually use the present
03:44 continuous . When this case talked about confirmed plans in
03:47 the future , we say I'm taking a cruise in
03:50 July or for a confirmed plan that's maybe closer to
03:55 the present Weaken . Say , I'm seeing a show
03:58 in New York next week . So again , this
04:01 is confirmed . I am definitely going . I have
04:04 it on my calendar . I probably have the tickets
04:07 already , and I use the present continuous for talking
04:10 about the future . I'm seeing a show in New
04:13 York next week . Now , we can also use
04:17 going to for confirmed plans . Okay , So it's
04:21 also possible to say I'm going to take a cruise
04:25 in July or gonna I'm gonna take a cruise in
04:28 July or I'm going to see a show in New
04:32 York next week or I'm going to see a show
04:35 in New York next week . Okay , So both
04:37 of these the present continuous with I N g and
04:42 going to both of them are perfectly correct for talking
04:46 about confirmed plans . Okay . Are you practicing yet
04:50 ? I'd like you to write in the comments .
04:52 One intention you have for this year . Like I'm
04:56 going to study English more in 2017 and then one
05:00 confirmed plan you have like I'm seeing a show next
05:05 week . Try to use the present continuous for talking
05:08 about the future . Alright ? So many remember ,
05:10 always put what you're learning into practice as soon as
05:14 possible , so let's try to do that in this
05:16 video . The next way to talk about the future
05:19 is by making predictions . Okay , so predictions are
05:24 just imaginings about the future . You are thinking about
05:28 how you imagine the future will be . So these
05:32 have to do more with you more with your intentions
05:36 and your plans . Predictions are a little more general
05:40 , and at the beginning of the year you'll see
05:41 a lot of predictions in newspapers . For example ,
05:45 um , this year the economy will grow or the
05:49 economy won't grow . So for predictions , we often
05:53 use will and Won't will being the positive form and
05:57 won't short for will not . That's the negative form
06:02 the economy will grow this year . The economy won't
06:05 grow this year . The new president will do this
06:10 . The new president won't do that , okay ?
06:14 And we can also use going to for predictions .
06:18 So it's perfectly correct to say the economy is going
06:21 to grow this year , where the economy is not
06:24 going to grow this year . The new president is
06:27 going to pass a new law or the new president
06:30 is not going to pass a new law . Okay
06:33 ? Some people say that going to has more certainty
06:38 than will and won't news . I don't know .
06:42 Maybe I don't think that's really the case . I
06:44 think you can use both of these equally for predictions
06:48 . And you can quantify the amount of certainty by
06:51 using words like , Definitely , the economy will definitely
06:56 grow this year . Or the economy definitely won't grow
06:59 this year , okay ? Or the economy is definitely
07:02 going to grow . The economy is definitely not going
07:06 to grow . Okay , So I would use a
07:08 word like definitely to emphasize it if you are very
07:12 certain that your prediction will come true or you can
07:15 use a word like probably to show that it's likely
07:19 , but it's not completely certain . Alright , Um
07:23 and if you're a little more uncertain than you can
07:25 use the word maybe right , maybe the economy will
07:29 grow this year . Or maybe the economy is going
07:33 to grow this year . All right , so there
07:34 are different degrees of certainty and predictions , but I
07:37 would use the words maybe probably , and definitely to
07:42 indicate those different degrees of certainty . But you can
07:45 use both will and will and going to or not
07:48 going to to make predictions . So let's you put
07:51 it into practice . Make one or two predictions for
07:54 what you think is going to happen in 2017 and
07:57 write them in the comments . So you might be
08:00 wondering , when are some other situations where we use
08:04 will and won't ? Well , we often use will
08:08 and won't for promises and decisions that are made in
08:13 the moment of speaking . So an example of a
08:15 promise would be , Let's say , I have Children
08:18 and my Children really want to go to Disney World
08:21 . I might say I'll take you to Disney World
08:24 this year . Okay , that's a promise . I'll
08:26 take you to Disney World this year or , um
08:30 , I don't know . Maybe your boyfriend or girlfriend
08:33 is complaining that you're working too much . So maybe
08:37 you make a promise with won't I won't work so
08:40 much this year , Okay , again , that's a
08:42 promise . You could also phrase that as an intention
08:45 , you could also say I'm not going toe work
08:48 so much this year . That would also be okay
08:50 so you can see that there is some overlap between
08:53 these categories . Sometimes more than one option is correct
08:58 . Let's talk about decisions you make in the moment
09:01 . Okay , So a decision , an example of
09:04 a decision in the moment would be , Let's say
09:06 , your friend says , Hey , I have tickets
09:09 to this really great concert on . It's gonna be
09:12 so much fun , and you get interested in going
09:15 to the concert , too . So in that conversation
09:17 , you say , Oh , I'll buy some tickets
09:20 to All right . You weren't planning on it before
09:23 or you weren't thinking about going to the concert before
09:26 , but when your friend mentioned it , then you
09:28 decided in that moment that you want to buy tickets
09:31 to . So in that case , we usually use
09:34 will and won't . I'll buy some tickets to okay
09:37 for communicating decisions that you make in the moment .
09:42 So I hope this lesson has helped you understand better
09:45 how to talk about the future in English the different
09:48 ways we have of talking about the future in English
09:52 . Remember to practice by writing some comments and at
09:56 the beginning of the year , it's also a great
09:58 time to make a plan for your English study .
10:01 I really think that the best students have a plan
10:05 for their English study , and then they stick to
10:07 the plan . That means they follow it . They
10:10 don't just forget about it or abandon it . And
