What Do Venus Fly Traps Look Like?

The average Venus Fly Trap has a number of long shoots with oval shaped traps at the end of them. Each trap looks like a small set of jaws with a series of long thin trigger hairs on the edges of each side. The colors of the traps can be anywhere from bright green to dark red. The color of the trap depends on the amount of light that the plant receives. The more light a Venus Fly Trap is exposed to, the more red its color becomes. It is quite unusual for a plant to become totally red. In addition to traps, the plant also has long leaves in the Summer and Fall months. It can also grow white flowers to make seeds that fall into the ground and create new plants.

Venus Fly Trap plants are surprisingly small. Each trap is at most one inch long. Though a plant usually has between four and twenty traps, it rarely gets larger than five inches in diameter. The reason that the plant and its traps are so small has to do with its diet. Most insects are small so the traps must be just the right size to catch and eat them.
