Gerry walked around enjoying nature. This was his favorite time of day. In less than an hour, the activity would slow down as the zoo closed for the day. The visitors would go home and the zoo workers would spend extra time with the animals. Many times, the workers would offer special treats. Before this could happen, Gerry had to make it through until closing. Looking up, he spotted a family walking close to the edge of the enclosure.
“Let’s see the giraffe, Grandma!” one of the two little boys shouted loudly. “I want to see him,” the other one yelled. “If you are not quiet, you will scare him off,” the grandmother cautioned. She reached into her basket to pull out a handful of lettuce. Gerry couldn’t help but move a little closer. It was his favorite kind of lettuce.
The first boy whispered quietly. “Can I have some lettuce? He is coming this way.” After getting a handful of the green vegetable, the boy held it over the edge of the enclosure. “Here he comes.”
Gerry closed his eyes and chewed the delicious treat in pleasure. This was definitely his favorite time of day.
