The red tail hawk noticed something was happening to all of the other animals living in Running Brook during the spring. The birds seemed to be losing their feathers. The bears were losing their fur. Mountain goats were complaining that their feet hurt. The beavers had cavities, and the deer all seemed to be catching colds. The red squirrels had gotten so fat that they almost could not make it across the road.
Hawk made an observation. He was pretty sure that everything started happening when the town’s first fast food restaurant opened. Forest Fawn thought he brought a great idea to the town and that he could make some extra money. He opened an eatery where food was easy to prepare, order, and eat quickly. Forest Fawn knew how difficult it was to find food during the winter months. He thought that he was doing his friends a favor.
The restaurant sold birdseed in five different flavors. Forest Fawn sold artificially flavored honey, salmon cakes, and deep-fried berries for the bears. Salted tree moss with lichen-flavored chips was on the shelf for the mountain goats and deer.
Compare what was happening to the animals.
