When Spanish conquistador Hernando Cortez arrived near the Rio Grande River, he noticed the local population growing crops including avocados, corn, garlic and nuts as well as onions, pumpkins, tomatoes, and chilli peppers. The people living in this area also created Irrigation systems which were used in some of the drier regions. The Aztec farmers were known to create a special type of terraced gardens. This was done to utilize rainfall the best way possible and to minimize erosion. We know that they used something called crop rotation as well as natural fertilizers to help their farm products grow better.
