Marlene is writing an essay pertaining to her trip to the South Texas Gulf Coast. Here is an excerpt from her narrative.

Every year, my parents and I travel to a part of the United States we have never visited before as a family. This year our vacation led us to South Texas along the Gulf Coast.

Dad had mentioned to me as I was growing up how much he always loved to visit his Nana (grandmother) along the Gulf Coast when he was young. She had moved from the area before I was born and he had not returned since.

His recollections included traveling along old state highway 35 into Rockport. Here he vividly remembered such places as Fulton Mansion and Charlotte Plummer’s Restaurant along with the calm beach waters and the historical lighthouse.

So as we left the airport in our rental car in Houston, his first stop he said had to be Rockport. It only took us about 2 hours to get there using Dad’s GPS and elephant memory! As we entered Rockport, you could see Dad’s shoulders relax and the gleam in his eyes was unmistakable.

He began to describe to us what we were seeing and were going to see.
“Look to the left, see there along the beachhead. The seagulls are heading to their nightly nesting spots on the pier. How gallantly they spread their wings in flight and slowly descend to their comfort zone to roost on the barnacled pier. Such peace can only bring happiness to anyone watching them.”

“Oh, wait look farther down! Yes, it’s Charlotte Plummer’s Seafood Restaurant! We must stop for dinner. I can already smell the food. The seafood platter will delight both of you. It is an enormous tray loaded down with mouth-watering Texas fried oysters, fried catfish, shrimp and french fries ready to bite into and taste the succulent dishes.

After reading this narrative, choose and highlight the two sentences showing elaboration. (Which ones draw the most vivid pictures in your mind.)
