Read the passage and answer the question.

Sally woke up earlier than she expected one morning. Something wasn't right. She then realized what had awakened her. It was an unfamiliar sound. She listened closely and realized that the sound was coming from outside. Climbing out of her bed, she slipped into her robe and slippers and went to the window. Looking out, she soon spotted a small kitten under the tree that stood outside her window. She stood staring at the helpless creature. It didn't move. It soon spotted her and meowed, as if it were calling out to her.

Sally left her room and found her mother in the kitchen. She excitedly told her mom about the kitten. "I am going outside to get the poor little thing," she told her mother. "I'll go with you," her mom replied. Together they walked into the backyard. The kitten was still there waiting for them. Sally picked it up in her arms. The little kitten felt so soft and cuddly in her arms. She had always wanted a kitten, and wondered if her mother would allow her to keep him. Mother decided to first feed the kitten. She also decided to make a few calls to see where he came from. The kitten certainly needed a home. Sally became more hopeful that she would be able to keep the kitten.
